Even though I want to ignore EVO over its acquisition by the Saudis, the inclusion of Vampire Savior is too much to resist... and the inclusion of famous kusoge Hokuto no Ken is insane. I will have to watch those two.

with rules too:
Zabel unblockables are banned in VS

as for HnK:
Shin invincibility, Rei slide bug, time stop, and any other bugs not listed that halt game progression are banned from use. If a player uses a bug to stop or delay game progression, even if accidental, they will be assessed a game loss.

The HnK stuff is crazy. Doesn't everyone in that game have infinites anyway? It's gonna be a riot to watch.

Personally I started ignoring it after some dramas that we all are aware of but yeah, I prefer smaller events with more niche fighting games than it.

I'll always unironically love this picture

I used to be more into them, but now the only ones I ever go back to are Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter. Those are the only games that feel like they reward you for having good defense and aren't as aggressive and in your face constantly.

Still convinced that the best creative ideas are just random flashes of inspiration:
So cool.

What’s everyone’s opinion on the latest Mortal Kombat (1, I guess)?
I’ve never played any MK since I found them kinda corny and the fatalities too intense for my fragile little boy mind, but I’ve seen a bit of gameplay from it and it looks pretty neat. It’s on sale, but still a tough sell since I’m a stranger to them and since it’s like a billion gigs in install size.
Also helps that Conan is playable, since it’s like my favorite movie and he looks incredible.

I’ve heard pretty mixed opinions in general about (both story and gameplay-wise) it but figured I’d ask. I don’t mind that they rebooted the timeline or whatever since I’m totally new to the series. The only thing even I catched is that Shao Kahn has been downranked lol.

I bought the game just for Conan and that lone makes it's really fun to play, it's definitely not a game I'll be playing for hundreds of hours by any means but still, was well worth it to buy on sale with all it's dlc for €17 in a sale on psn recently. Played most of the mortal kombat games throughout the years and outside of injustice 2, I vastly prefer the capcom fighters in general.

My top favorite fighting series:
Marvel vs Capcom (1 and 2 are the best)
Soul Calibur (3 and 6 are my faves)
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi (especially 2 but 3 is good)
Smash (all of them)
Soul Calibur 3 is close enough to being my favourite fighting game of all time, so many hours sunk into that game, staying awake into the early hours trying to get all of seigfrieds routes and then everyone else. Great game, massive in content too.

I will die on the hill of budokai tenkaichi 2 was vastly superior to 3, 3 had more characters but the story mode fights were more scripted and annoying to play, alongside it being truncated. Probably the most disappointed I was in a dragon ball game till Ultimate tenkaichi, which was a Kinect game ported to use a controller so it's no suprise really that it doesn't play great.

Since its a fighting game thread I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in on Marvels Tokon, lifelong capcom marvel fighters fan, had MVC 1 since it's original release on the dreamcast, played it for decades at this stage, hated 2 at first and grew to love it, love 3 also with me and my friends putting hundred upon hundreds of hours into local versus on UMVC 3. I was simply blown away by how fun Marvels Tokon was to play, honestly the most fun I've ever had playing a fighting game since DBFZ, with this being better because I can actaully startige hits more alongside controlling where I am in the stage. DBFZ has the weakness of being a game that focuses rushing and that gets tiring.

Marvel Tokon genuinely feels like the spiritual successor to MVC, and as a lifelong cap user, I felt right at hoome using him in tokon, I played quite a few fights in the second beta (not as much I a I wanted as was up to my ears in university assignments) I did not lose a single match up. Spidey ain't great though, Iron man and peter quill were pretty great, with star lord being a surprise with how fun he was.

As a fan that got burned by just how thrash tier MVC infinite was, and this was marvel meddling too much in comparison to their current hands off approach which is working out nicely, but they insisted on it reflecting only the movies and rushed releases, Tokon put a smile on my face :D.

Solid list.

Mines are probably (out of order)
  • Guilty Gear (especially X and XX)
  • Melty Blood (Actress Again Current Code)
  • Street Fighter (well, the Alpha and III series)
I consider Smash to be its own thing but I love Melee and Brawl.

I think my favorite fighting game has to be Def Jam Fight For NY. I always end up replaying it once a year from start to finish. Since I grew up in hood culture, the style and atmosphere always hit close for me (in a good way). Also my stepfather listened and showed me lots of classic hip-hop artist of the time and it was really nice to see those artist in a fighting game.

The blazin moves were amazing. Some of the best fighting animations I have seen. It was a mix of realism and fantasy fighting. The only game series I can think of that has crazy blazin types moves are "heat moves" from the yukuza series.

Even if you don't care for hip-hop music, I really recommend giving Def Jam Fight For NY a shot. You won't be disappointed
