Favorite old films?

been watching a lot of older movies recently (1960's-1980's mainly) to broaden my horizons (& theyre also very easy to watch online mostly) and wanted a place to talk them & get some recommendations. there isn't a specific genre or timeframe im referring to, interested in seeing more non-english works tho. anyways go crazy im curious what you guys have seen

I'm a huuuge John Waters fan, rewatched Hairspray (1988) today and it was so funny. I also love Female Trouble (1974). America's sweetheart, Divine (rip) kicks ass in both of these.

High and Low (1963) by Akira Kurosawa was really good & suspensful, i have a few of his films saved on the internet archive that i've been meaning to watch.

lastly, What ever happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Robert Aldrich is a new comfort classic for me, something about watching a lady go increasingly off the rails for an hour is so appealing to me lol
My favorite old films are Luc lessons French Taxi series and gotta say I'm glad everyone thinks the fifth entry is it's own alternate timeline

Adult animation, it's a bit of a visual trip.

I'd add that every single Bakshi movies are worth a watch (YES, even Cool World despite being a total mess, it still has some amazing visual ideas and deserve to be seen). American Pop, Fritz the Cat and Fire and Ice are my personal favorites

Other recommandations for old films (trying to add foreign films) :
- If you enjoy musicals = Singin in the Rain ; A star is born (1954 version) ; Show Boat (1936 or 1951 versions) ; The King and I ; The Young Girls of Rochefort and Cabaret
- Film noir = Sunset Boulevard ; Double indemnity ; The Maltese Falcon ; The Lady from Shangai ; Mildred Pierce and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
- Romance = The Little Shop around the Corner ; In the Mood for Love ; A Swedish Love Story and Trouble in Paradise
- War films = The Deer Hunter ; Full Metal Jacket ; The Dirty Dozen and Apocalypse Now
- Drama = Stella Dallas ; The Grapes of War : Volver and The Last Metro
Horror = Carnival of Souls ; The Haunting ; L'Aldilà and Dawn of the Dead

Hopefully you'll find something you enjoy out of these remendations (or anyone reading this). I have an Art degree specialized in cinema and film making so I always love recommanding old films X)

I'dd add to these Heavy Traffic. Easily my favorite Bakshi movie, just the intro playing Scarborough Fair while someone is playing pinball easily won me over. Such a feel...

I'm gonna give a super original answer here with this hidden gem
I watched this one recently. A transfer from an old cinema 35mm film copy from Project 4K77. Star Wars may have fallen in obscurity these days, but for the time its special effects were surpassed only by Kubrick's 2001 and the writing only by every movie made for adults. I still recommend it as a really good time.

Speaking of Star Wars and non-English films, every Star Wars fan should see "The Hidden Fortress" by Akira Kurosawa. Lucas borrowed freely from the story structure, characters, shots and even camera transitions of this movie. To the point that Kurosawa should claim writing credits for a "A New Hope", lol. Or sue for plagiarism.

Most of what I was gonna put here was picked by others already, so I'll go with Riki-Oh.
The batshit insane Hong Kong adaptation to an equaly batshit insane manga, it's one and a half hours of the most ridiculous over the top violence put to film and not much else, it's incredible. If you like shlock you have to see it!

I don't think my brain's working as I read that as Rip Taylor
Clint's cheroot makes it look like he's having a stroke on his left side
If DeepSea or whatever can gin up a version of the movie with Rip Taylor interrupting gunfights with confetti, I'll take back everything I said about AI.
