Genesis Favorite Genesis games?

Sword of Vermilion
Target Earth is great but very tough
I like a lot of the early stuff (Super Hang-on, Super Monaco GP, Last Battle, Tommy Lasorda Baseball, Phantasy Star II)
Streets of Rage II is kind of a must
Pirates! Gold is a great game on the Genesis but not the best version of that title
I like Wonder Boy in Monster World
Also the T&E Soft golf games but you have to be a fan of clunky 3d

You said you are not into 2d plat right? But i will recommend Dynamite Headdy it is a 2d Plataformer developed by Treasure, it has amazing spritework, a surreal soundtrack and a quite challenger and unique gimmick with the head switchs! Can't recommend enough

i really like 2d platformers, i just didn't mesh with how sonic does em specifically.

i first saw dynamite headdy in a whoisthisgit video like 10 years ago, and ive always wanted to play it! i should really get around to that sometime... Treasure has such a great track record, so im sure it's killer just like their other stuff.

ok.... lezz C here. think I'm gonna go genre to genre. this might be overkiLL af when all is said n done but obv from this n the posts that follow it is purdy obvious I'm a Sega phan xD

2D B'mups
------------
Alien Storm (awesome in a varied, goofy way if you give it a chance - light-gun-ish elements too)

Altered Beast (the original pack-in n one of the easiest, shortest games of all time but definitely not a terrible experience)

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (get the translated one - simple n cutesy but quality beat-em-up)

Captain America and the Avengers (a good port of the arcade one with all the hilarious voice dialogues intact - "WHERE IS THE LASER??" "ASK THE POLICE!!" " A-'MURICA STILLL NEEEDS UR HEEEELLLp!" xD )

Comix Zone (a fun but tough. innovative, entertaining classic from STI. played out in too many Sega compilations but deserving nonetheless)

Cyborg Justice (I'm sorry but I love this game. the unique intro, the badass customization, graphics n animation, the fact that it's a boss-rush game like Strider or Contra: Hard Corps... combat n play control are a little wonkey at first but once you acclimate to it it's a sweet n destructive romp. plus how many games can you knock off an enemy's arm, pick it up as a weapon n beat them over the head with it. seriously!)

Dahna - Megami Tenjou (get the translated one or might not matter. but this one's unique, n a lot of fun. kinda like The Incredible Hulk crossed with Valis IV or something)

Final Fight MD (this is a port of the Sega CD version of Final Fight [which IMO, is the best version of Final Fight 1. yes better than OG arcade OR Final Fight One for GBA] - an unreleased 'demo' but seems like a full game - colors n music take a huge hit but whaddaya expect - hey you can pick Cody/Guy/Haggar all in one unlike the SNES ports)

Golden Axe (Sega classic but honestly this might be the worst in the franchise besides possibly Beast Rider or Golden Axed but it's still pretty decent)

Golden Axe II (richer graphics, better music, smoother control n combat... nothing really innovative over the 1st but its quality enhancements make it worth your time)

Golden Axe III (panned for plainer graphics n magic FX - don't listen to any of that is my advice. more char selection that all play differently plus an unlockable char... non-linear lvl progression n some of the best, deeper combat of any 16-bit b'mup. IMO this one's heads n tails above the 1st 2 games)

Growl (as someone who wants to look into bein an animal rights supporter - this is a great b'mup from any standpoint but seein these poachers n other assholes hurtin the poor animulz? NOW IT'S PERSONAL TAITO make me a selectable char! if only...)

Last Battle/Hokuto no Ken (if you can, play the translated Hokuto no Ken. as a longtime fan of the series this is a very nice launch title - a little primitive n plenty hard but I love it - worth a shot)

Mazin Saga - Mutant Fighter (good stuff here - impressive. plays almost like a cross between Golden Axe n Kunio-kun/River City Ransom series)

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - The Movie (don't be repulsed. the actual show may have a rep for beim corny, campy. lame - but most of its game adaptations aren't. very fun, solid beat-em-up that looks n sounds good too)

Mystical Fighter (very nice play-control n satisfying combat feel. SamSho's Kyoshiro would be proud of these fellow Kabukis [but would still probably kill them hehe] )

Nightmare Circus (an ambitious one but not really a good game. still, worth a play to see a Genesis game that hilariously makes little sense at aLL)

Rastan Saga II (this is kinda more of a 2D platformer... fun with disturbingly-designed enemies... can't help be reminded of Amiga games [Shadow of the Beast is the main one I'm probably thinkin of] or the sequel to the Turbografx-16 classic [Legendary Axe]. but just like Legendary Axe - the 1st Rastan is better)

Shadow of the Beast 2 (as if on cue ^^ - nice graphics like the 1st one but better animation. a tough one but overall might tell you to pass on this one)

Spider-Man and Venom: Separation Anxiety (this actually looks dece, plays well, some depth in the combat. my initial intuition was wrong)

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (this seems too much like Separation Anxiety - but noticeably improved. n as a Marvel comics fan with literally over 10,000 from as far back as the early 60's to stuff from the early 90's when I basically abandoned comics kinda... the comic-book interludes in this are so entertainment n well-done dialogue, art, n obscure Marvel refs that I appreciated totally... n Green Jelly did the sdtrk... for better or worse -_- hehe - this one gets the approval)

pt. 2 of just this genre alone forthcoming - hopefully most posts can get all rec's for 1 genre in one go lol perhaps bein thorough here to a fault o_O hope these help, in any case

Kind've surprised some of these haven't been said. But easily Ristar is a really fantastic relaxing platformer. You jump and grab. Those are the controls. The sprite work is really beautiful as well.

Vectorman 1 and 2 are both great run and gun games. Kinda donkey kong country esc? Really hard though. Shows the power of the genesis.

Splatterhouse 3. Two is the more popular one but i think 3 is better. You go through a randomized house on a time limit to get the best ending, room to room just absolutely mutilating monsters. Good fun.

Lightening Force (also known as Thunder Force IV) is a classic schmup. Great graphics. For a little bit of a "hidden gem" i'd also throw in Insector X as another schmup. Doesnt get talked about much. You play as a guy in a robot suit shooting giant robot bugs. Nothing else like it i can think of.

I low-key prefer Castlevania Bloodlines over IV. Definitely one of the best on the megadrive.
I unequivocally recommend gunstar heroes as well. Treasure knew what they were doing, no matter what hardware they were on.
Comix zone is rather unique if frustrating, however iirc there is a fan hack that makes it more fair.
The Earthworm Jim games rank among my favorite 16bit titles despite a few of the key developers turning out to be irredeemably awful people later in life…

Beyond Oasis is a fantastic Zelda-esque that is super cozy and really fun to play... if a bit surprisingly difficult.

Tinhead is super underplayed but so charming and original. It's really addictive to play and deserved more love.

Chakan: Forever Man has flaws for sure, but it's oozing style and cool factor. If you can overlook the sometimes wonky mechanics and blatantly unfinished latter half, it really is pretty great.

Dinosaurs for Hire is the best Contra-lite I think I've ever played and it's hilarious. There's so much charm to it and you get to play as dinosaurs... with guns.

Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion are just phenomenal Mickey Mouse platformers and super charming.

Ecco 1 & 2 are so atmospheric and beautiful, and the gameplay is really unique and addictive. It has problems, but it's so special in so many ways that I don't think that really matters.

Vectorman is incredible for its time and still really fun to play, if a bit frustrating.

Puggsy is one of the most unique platformers I've ever played and once you 'click' with it you'll be hooked. It does have a learning curve, though.

Comix Zone is straight-up one of the best games on the console. Just play it.

Castlevania Bloodlines is classic Castlevania to the core, but has a unique style to it and lets you play as a second character who's entirely a different playstyle.

Subterrania is a really cool shmup with a very unique exploration element to it. It's maddeningly difficult but it's just so cool and so captivating despite that.

Blades of Vengeance is an action platformer with strangely great feeling mechanics despite feeling budgety. The boss fights all have this weird way of feeling frustrating and cheap at first, only for it to 'click' and you realize how well designed they actually are.

Ristar is super underrated and a very unique take on the platformer genre. It takes a little getting use to but then you're just all in.

Pulseman is a GameFreak platformer that really deserves more love.

Kid Chameleon is a pretty interesting platformer with a transformation mechanic. You find different masks/heads that transform you into different characters with different abilities you use to traverse the levels. It can be kind of confusing, though.

Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Heady are both fantastic run-n-guns that ooze charm and cannot be recommended enough. DH is particularly weird in a really fun way. Made by the same people.

Splatterhouse 2 is a grueling side-scrolling beat 'em up that pays homage to classic horror films. It's absolutely demented and really fun to play, though famously hard. Splatterhouse 3 is quite a bit different but pretty original and, despite some flaws, I actually think it's the better of the two games.

Earthworm Jim is a classic for a reason, and I definitely recommend it... but I always preferred B.O.B. There's so many little robotisms you can do to keep the gameplay fresh and the main character is just so likable. If you love tiny bits of fun details like unique animations that give the main character a lot of personality, you can't miss with B.O.B.

X-Men 2 Clone Wars is a really good action game where you can play as multiple different X-Men who all feel pretty different.

Aladdin. Totally different game from the SNES and just as good (arguably better.)

Zoop is a super unique puzzle game that my mom absolutely obsessed over. Do it, try Zoop for mommy! T.T Also Columns is an excellent puzzle game.

I could be at this for a long, long time but I think this is a good start. There's a lot to love on this console and I hope you find plenty to enjoy.

Probably a lot of others, but I grew up with Sega Channel and it's just about impossible to keep track of all the ones I loved. These are the most prominent ones I still have attachment to.

The SEGA GENESIS was the console I owned the longest, and so I also got to try a ton of games for it. Some were good, some were horrible... and some were kinda there.

Which ones were your favorites?

I used to stay up all night playing International Super Star Soccer Deluxe and Lethal Enforcers II. Road Rash 3 was also a super popular multiplayer game for when I had friends over. And then there was stuff like G-Lock: Air Battle and Desert Strike, which were "lucky rentals" that I ended up buying.

What about you?
Streets of rage 1 and 2 for sure. 3 is ok, sonic 1,2,3 and spinball, golden axe, altered beast.

For what it's worth i've heard the japanese version of streets of rage 3 is a MUCH better game, so much so someone made a romhack of just making the us version more like it, if i remember right.
Golden axe 2 is one of my favorite beat em ups.

I would be interested in the romhack then ill get a genesis emulator and hit it over the weekend. Thanks buddy. Had golden axe 2 on PSP earlier. The arcade golden axe is good too.

Revenge of death adder is great, probably my favorite of the series, but that's not a genesis game so i didn't mention it.

I only play BKIII with a translation patch.

I need to try Golden Axe 2&3.

A little known favorite of mine is Bio-Hazard Battle. The atmosphere of the game is super unique, especially amongst shooter games. As frustrating as it can be, with its one hit deaths and like 2 frames of respawn invulnerability leading to many a rapid-fire death, I still absolutely love this game. I'll never forget how I struggled so much to get past level 4, then, the first time I played co-op with a friend, we made it all the way to the final stage. After that, I was just somehow able to consistently get there by myself. That co-op run was so hype.
