Favorite Genesis games?

Ah, well, that's aisha for me (& her blue pepelogoo).
Sometimes it's just monster world v for me (this is deliberated saying this, for some specific reason).
that moment when everything goes crazy in that game, is that touching whistle/call (and the finale)...
maybe someday, I will play it again, to get every life drop container...

Ikagura, thank you very much (y)
this cleared up some doubts for me.
You're welcome.

I think the one with the girl protag was 6 ?
I bet that Monster World IV wasn't named Wonderboy because it featured a female protagonist.

And maybe because they wanted to remove the Wonder Boy name to make it less ambiguous with the Wonder Boy series?

Or because it was Japanese exclusive. Wonder Boy in Monster World removed the 5 and 3 from the title especially because they wanted to remove any confusion in the west.

The Wonder Boy Series had some confusing history... There are even two separate Wonder Boy III titles: Monster Lair (a run'n gun game) and Dragon's Trap (an Action/Adventure/Proto-Metroidvania).

Castlevania Bloodlines is a great Classic style Castlevania game, easily one of my favorites in the franchise.

I have a ton of very fond memories of co-op Gunstar Heroes.
I feel that Rondo and Super Castlevania IV overshadowed Bloodlines a lot (because of the impressive CD audio and animated cinematic for one and the Mode 7 and 8-directionnal whipping for the other). In 1994 people were already interested in 3D and a more arcade like platformer would just be yet another game in a genre that was saturated...

Gunstar Heroes showed how great Treasure would soon become.

Too many to count.
Honestly, I used to be a Nintendo gamer with little interest in anything Sega had to offer, besides a handful of titles like Sonic 2.

Since buying a Genesis as a teenager, I've greatly expanded my interests in other consoles, and while there's a lot that I do like for the Sega Genesis, they've always sort of taken a back seat to the NES and Super Nintendo.

There's a ton of new homebrew games still being made for the Genesis, though; I'd have to say I would probably pick one of those.

Right now I'm working on getting through The Citadel of Chaos, more of a visual novel than a game. 😅

Sonic 3, Streets of Rage 2 and Fatal Labyrinth I think.
Most games that were available on both Mega Drive/Genesis and SNES I tend to prefer the SNES version so I’ll go with those exclusive games.
I haven’t played as much of that system as I’d have liked to.

I REALLY need to try the Phantasy Star series... seems like it's one of the best things to ever grace the system.
So as much as i love the phantasy star games, i should probably preface a few things about the first 3 games.
The first 2 are archaic as hell, not bad, but archaic, what i mean by this is that you have to remember both came out in the mid to late 1980's, with all the drawbacks games of that era had, maze like maps with no guided path, very simple combat systems, and far higher difficulty than modern day games on average, that being said i consider 2 to have one of the best stories in any game series bar none, proof that you don't need 30 minute cutscenes to tell a compelling story and that sometimes saying less can be a better storytelling method than 30 minute cutscenes.
Oh and phantasy star 1 plays differently than 2-4, 1 is more like shining in the darkness in that it's mostly a first person dungeon crawler except on the overworld.

Phantasy star 3 is the black sheep of the series, i wouldn't call it a bad game, just experimental, it's story and gameplay flow is handled vastly different than 1, 2 or 4's, if it wasn't named phantasy star it would probably be treated far better.

4 is...a masterpiece, for 25 years it was my favorite game of all time, only unseated by ys 8 lacrimosa of dana a few years ago, 4 holds up extremely well even 30 years after it's release.

All of the games are chronologically linked, with exception of 3, kinda (3 takes place at the same time as 4, but both games have little to do with each other, 2 takes place 1000 years after 1, 3 and 4 take place 1000 years after 2, 3 could be considered something like a parallel universe game).

2 and 3 are harder to get into imo (maybe because of the dungeon design and walking speed for the first and many other issues for the other). The first game had the excuse of being 8-bits and even then there were were various battle backgrounds instead of a blue grid.

Anything Phantasy Star except Zero is good.

And I'm sure even Zero has its fans.
Eeeh, Zero is good. Rough on the edges but still impressive for the hardware it was on.

Of course it feels like a downgrade because of the lack of a secondary d-pad but you can still play it mostly like PSO (with PSU's Photon Arts) and chaining makes you do more damage.

I'd still say that the original Universe really has big issues, several downgrades compared to Online (mostly the story being more shonen-esque, no combo until AotI came into play and perhaps it being Photon Art spammy that makes you better as a Hunter in solo).

At least Ambition and Portable 2 really improved upon that and 2 Infinity is as good as Blue Burst.

Generations of Doom had good ideas but not executed well...

I would rule out Ys as it's an ARPG and not a turn based one personally.

Well a easy way around that for the first two games is to play the ps2 remakes, both are translated in the repo under the phantasy star generation moniker.

And even then my issue is that they feel "cheap" (not big remakes) as well as an art style that lacks the 80's feel.

I would still play them once I'm done with 2 and 3.
