PC DOOM or Quake?

Bit off-topic, but Quake and Quake II are even more officially set in the same Lovecraftian multiverse. I WAS RIGHT!!! Including, presumably, about my theory the Grunts and Enforcers (which according to my old Quake 64 strategy guide are cyborgized themselves) are literally Strogg.

Absolutely love both, but if I had to choose one, it would be Quake, the original one to be specific. I love horror, and the original Quake did horror so well, to this day, I haven't really seen anything that has the visual style of Q1, never could get into Q2, it's not bad, just not my kinda thing, too generic for my tastes. But for some reason I do enjoy Q4, which is basically Q2, but more horror focused the same way DOOM 3 was.

Oh, and Quake Arena was my childhood, God Tier gaming

Both are great, but if would have to choose only one:

Is that counting mods and multiplayer for both?

I choose Quake. The last part of Doom was very disappointing for me, I really expected more than just better graphics.

Definitely DOOM, specially with how many conversions the older games got and how awesome Eternal ended up being.

Quake suffers the issue that its presentation post Romero leaving is boring
I love body horror and the whole vibe of the Strogg is neat but Quake 1 was on an entirely different level that made it stand out waaaay more than anything that came after
Id really like if modern Id stopped being pussies and actually made a new singleplayer Quake cause its not like theyve been adding stuff from Q1 to Eternal and Dark Ages

(also Im not good at Quake 3 lmao)

Some days it's a Doom day, some days it's a Quake day.

In terms of the series as a whole, I think Doom has had more TLC as a franchise, and on average probably the newer games have been stronger than the most recent Quake games. If you compared only Doom 1 and 2 and Quake 1 and 2 though it would be pretty close for me.

For multiplayer I think Quake wins by miles simply because how deep it could get with movements (Doom is also fast paced but the lack of jumping, rocket/grenade jump and bhop vastly limits the players).

For mods I think both could've been ex-aequo but Doom has the most of them.

For single player as good as Quake is for speedruns I prefer the more colourful Doom with more enemies in maps.

Doom. Again, both franchises are cool but :
-Doom has vastly more user-created content. Quake 1 and Quake 2 have also gotten a lot of love from user creators in recent times, but due to easier-to-use mapping tools there's way more custom content for Doom.
-Doom's official games are more consistent in theme and tone. Quake 1 was the way it was due to part "accident" because of the development was so messy, and then the sequels shifted the tone a lot towards a more sci-fi approach, while Doom as a series was very consistent with it's sci-fi marines and demons theme.
-Doom 2016 and Eternal are great new modern additions to the franchise, keeping a lot of the spirit tone and themes while also bringing some new mechanics (weapon upgrades, the dynamic with the glory kills and chainsaw) that worked to create intense gameplay.

That said, I'm glad that Quake and Quake 2 have gotten more love in the recent years from mappers and modders thanks to the Remasters, and the additional episodes to Quake 1 & 2 introduced in the Remaster / re-release were solid work!

DooM, grew up with it, also when quake was released my pc was too much of a potato to be able to run it at a reasonable frame rate

Doom, bust mostly because it was what i came to first. My family PC in the 90s could handle Doom, but not Quake, so I never really got into Quake when it was at its height.

I've tried out some of the series since then, but It's never hooked me like Doom did.

Doom, not just the original episodes but also the amount of mods. Brutal Doom i played the most many times, Quake is good but never quite click with me compared to Doom or Duke 3D and Blood.

quake 100%, 1000%, no comparison, if we are taking the whole franchise into account, not even nu-doom can stand a chance no waaaaaaaaayyyyyy dude

DOOM 1 & 2 for a better singleplayer and modding experience

Quake 3 for a much better and intense multiplayer deathmatch experience

Brutal Doom is fun but that's not the real Doom.

I like the Build Engine but darn the amount of hitscanners that ambushes you in corners compared to Doom and Quake...

Doom I & II -> Quake (1996) -> Prey (2006)
Hey, there were games between Quake and Prey... Half-Life and Unreal to cite them.

I'm replaying Quake on DOS via DosBox Pure (yes, I know there are sourceports) and I'm actually impressed that we got a fully 3D game actually running on a 16-bits OS. What allowed us to get hardware acceleration from one year to another?

I think that Doom was more impressive for '93 but Quake is still good nonetheless.

I can understand people thinking that the crude 3D and choppy animations for the enemies may have aged that game compared to a Doom that has timeless drawings for the demons (even if there are sourceports making the animations interpolated and better models).

As for the colours I can agree but that's because it's more of a horror FPS than Doom was. The Lovecraftian aspect also gets enhanced by those weird looking enemies as well.

NuDoom is still good but I do agree that movements were more complex in Quake 1 - 3.

I dont know about the movement but the intricate level design and the very unique and extremely dense gameplay quake has is nothing like doom

There's something about Quake III that I love yet I cannot tell.

I'd legit throw money at the screen if Bethesda/id announced a Quake V with a proper single player mode on top of a pure Arena shooter multiplayer.
