32X Do you think there is any way the 32x could've succeeded?

The only way for the 32x to succeed, in my opinion, would be if it was released as part of a console, with compatibility with Megadrive games, a kind of Megadrive Pro, and continued to be sold in poorer countries. As the hardware became cheaper, it wouldn't be so expensive.
Since they're still technically making sega mark 3\master systems in brazil maybe they should've gone all in, but doesn't tec toy already handle all of that?

Maybe if the 32x interacted with the saturn in some way...? But then again the ram expansion already serves that purpose

Megadrive games kept being made even after the ps1 launched and exceptuon stuff like batman and robin looked like a ps1 game almost

If someone's on a budget I can't see why they wouldnt have just gone with the megadrive, and you don't get a cd player and better music unlike the mega cd

I love my 32X, but it was doomed to fail. Sega had a prototype console called the Neptune which was Mega Drive with the 32X hardware built in. I think that if Sega had launched the Neptune and not launched the 32X or Saturn than there would have been a chance that it could be somewhat successful as it's a 32bit console with full backwards compatibility, but I also think that Sony still would have beaten them out due to the Neptune not supporting optical disks.

While the Neptune probably could have performed better, it was a bad idea for the same reason as the N64. Sega should never have greenlit the 32X, they should have put their full backing behind the Saturn. Tom Kalinske literally killed Sega when he asked for the 32X.

The idea in my head would be this: The 32x would have to be released after the Saturn so as not to compete directly with it and be more like the Neptune prototype and continue to be sold in third world countries like Brazil, being an upgrade of the Megadrive and receiving games.
Tectoy only re-released the Megadrive and Master System in Brazil, they even released some 32x games when it was still supported, but they never re-released the 32x.

I think that in the market of the late 90s, 2000s to the 2010s it could have an appeal in underdeveloped markets, because in those countries there is a demand for games but not a lot of money.
Nowadays it would be crazy, since we have smartphones all over the world.
But something like the Nomad could have worked, but it's a shame SEGA Japan never did anything about it.
What killed SEGA was the feud between the two franchises; true, they both had ambitious projects, but without coordination they were almost shooting in the dark.

You make it have similar architecture to the Saturn and actually stick with it. It MIGHT HAVE worked to have a high end and low end device, sharing many of the same games, with the Saturn clearly having more.

That said, it was always a bad plan. Carts were too small for the games people wanted to make. The add on was underpowered and confusing. It never made any sense to release the 32X if you were just going to release the Saturn anyway. Literally killed the goodwill towards the company just because they wanted to keep the Genesis alive. It’s a tragedy.
