My first own Pokémon game was a used copy of LeafGreen I bought in 2011 (CiB for 10 bucks. Those were the days...), but that time I didn't name my Pokémon anything, so I just had a female Venusaur named VENUSAUR, who I loved alot despite not getting a name.

Then I got HeartGold which became my all-time favorite Pokémon game and the one I played the very most, and I'm PRETTY sure I named my first starter (a Chikorita) after one of my little brothers, which was a tradition I kept for a good long while.

I never got in the habit of nicknaming them. I know it sounds aloof, but despite having some favorites I never developed any kind of emotional attachment to my Pokémon (I think Monster Rancher does a better job at developing said attachment, too).

I never nicknamed my mons in Pokémon Red. For one, whereas in later gens the Pokémon in your party are represented by small miniatures of themselves, in Red they were just generic sprites. Like, water Pokémon had the same sprite, grass Pokémon had the same sprite etc. So if I named them and didn't remember who I named what, it would be impossible to switch the correct Pokémon out in the heat of battle since, again unlike future gens, you couldn't check the summary of your other mons before you switched them out. Therefore I exclusively went with their birthnames so they were easy to identity.

But even in future gens I never (or at least extremely seldom) name them, because in my world Pokémon aren't supposed to have another name than "their own". Maybe the anime brainwashed me, because no one in Indigo League (season 1) named their Pokémon, so I guess I just grew accustomed to that you "weren't supposed to name them". That their species WAS their name.
