Do you play games because it's cool or because you enjoy them?

I think we're all kinda misunderstanding the point here..

It's  cool to play things like Fortnite, Valorant, and Genshin Impact. We're not the cool ones for playing things like Ocarina of Time, Umihara Kawase, or bootleg Digimon games.
Okay, when you put it like that, with current multiplayer on one side and 90's single-player games on the other, it seems like the question is "Do you still play with your childhood toys alone in your room, or do you have fucking friends, nerd?"

Idgaf, games are cool as fuck and there's so many good ones out there to play.

Personally, I've always been a fan of couch co-op multiplayer games, my favorite way to play games. 😄

I still play Team Fortress 2 because it is really enjoyable. A lot of people find it cool but a fraction of those who say it's cool actually play or enjoy it. I think it is one of those rare instances where there's more hype than actual players that stick around. I've been playing since early 2014 and I know others who have played it since before 2010 or the game's release in 2007. There really is no other game out there like it, and anybody who compares it to anything really hasn't played TF2 all that much.

i dont know. i talk to my normal people friends and they dont really talk about it like its cool. its just socially more acceptable? like you're not gross for playing valorant but its still not cool and as soon as you stand next to someone with a hobby like idk reading you ARE gross by comparison.

they dont introduce anyone as "the guy that plays valorant" they just say "yeah this is jeff he doesnt do anything in particular"
I also have that same effect in me; whenever something is well established in society and everybody likes it, I lose all interest in it. Like, one of the biggest appeals in music for me is digging until I find something obscure that's really good, so I can share it with people that don't know about it. Same with games, same with movies, same with lotsa stuff.
SO TRUE
this is why i only listen to incelcore and AI covers of english songs until it becomes popular.
i already got my eyes on african vocal instrument music for when what i like becomes mainstream.
I like to press buttons and see explosions
this is what gaming is all about at its core.

Sweet! favorite arcade games? Or were you always strictly a console/PC player?
I've played it all. fav arcade: Disks of Tron, Sinistar and of course Street Fighter II. Fav Console: Dreamcast, Vectrex and Intellevision. The best PC of all time is still my trusty old Apple IIC 😉

If I play a popular game, it's by complete accident, or is because someone whose opinion I trust sold the idea of playing it to me. Whenever I try to play a game simply because it's popular, I find myself hating it. Especially beloved western games, but the PS360 is the only retro console where those are more common than beloved Japanese games. Reminder that reddit is a cesspit with terrible taste.

As for playing for social clout...not really. The last large community I was a part of prior to here was on GaiaOnline, back in like 2012. Even then, I mostly isolated myself to a Harvest Moon guild. I have no real benefit for playing games for that reason, and most of the smaller communities I'm in are either into obscure things, or know my tastes enough to know I'd talk about things like Last Bible Special because I wanted to try it (I hated it because I realized you can recruit the class that starts with the Maragi staff, strip them, then boot them until your actual party has six staves).

Most of the time I play games because I like them, no matter if they are AAA titles or obscure hidden gems. Even if a review says it's shit, if I like the gameplay I try it, and many times (not always!) I was glad I followed my nose. Also, it happens to read wonderful reviews and then I was like "meh".

Gameplay is in first place, of course I must like it; graphics second place, I'm not talking about super-hd-4k and so on, it's just that I must like what I see; story is not-so-important, I'm not really picky about that.

When I played a game "because it was a masterpiece of all times" it's been with "Zelda Ocarina" on 3ds, it came a day when I HAD TO PLAY it because I kept seeing it in the top-best-ranking, but I must confess I used a guide and I didn't become a Zelda fan. Ok, I liked it, but much less than other games that are not worlwide masterpieces. Instead I enjoyed the other Zelda on 3ds, "Link between worlds", I chose it because I thought the graphics were nice and also the gameplay, and I liked it very much.

When I fell for the advertsiment has been with "Zelda Tears Kingdom" on Switch: mega-open world and flying and I was sold, but hands-on I found it quite boring (and I hated the clunky Lego mechanics); another fall for advertisment has been "Call of Duty", not on release but out of curiosity I tried both the titles on Vita and one on the xbox360. Though I think "Ghost" was ok, after playing it I prefer other third-person shooter, maybe less famous but to me better than cod (one example over all, "Unit 13" on vita)

On the opposite, I never played a Persona games: on PSvita, my favourite console, P4 is regarded as an absolute masterpiece, and it probably is a very good rpg with hours and hours of fun and serious themes in it, but I don't like the devil references (tarots and so on), so I don't care if it's a classic, I'm not going to play any Persona title.

Also, I'm not a Youtuber, influencer, or anything like this, and in real life no one cares (it's not a hobby I talk about), so I have no reason to play something just to be cool.

I think it's very unlikely that someone will only have a taste for these "well regarded classics" and not enjoy playing any notoriously bad games, but at the same time a very large portion of the gaming community seems to do exactly this
Sir and/or Madam, I Platinum'd Balan Wonderworld on my Steam account because I watched someone else do it and thought it was funny. I am the furthest from 'cool' you can possibly get.

I play games because if I don't distract myself by making music or videos then I need something else to give me a reason to live

play old nes snes ps1 ps2 games because i enjoy them
i find that many of the unpopular games to ps1 and ps2 are really good

I'm from a time when video games were quite criticized and if you were 15 or older and still playing you were seen as immature and weird.

That made me and many others not care about the opinion of others of our hobbies, personally I think that since the games ceased to be a niche many entered the medium because it is already socially accepted because if it were not many of those would still see them wrong.

I play games because I enjoy playing them. I don't really care what games are cool to the gaming community, I feel like people should play the games that they want without being judged.

I spent 3 hours this morning playing a beta build of Grand Theft Auto 2 for the Playstation, then looking at screens from the PC Beta that isn't available, I think it's safe to say I enjoy video games.

I do similar stuff. I’d spend hours staring at dark souls and dragon quest stat sheets just to optimize my builds. Becomes a hobby in and of itself.

Its a mix of good ol escapism, competency, and stimulation

I've always been the type to get invested in the inner workings of games I really like. Grand Theft Auto 2 specifically is one of the most unique games that Rockstar made, it's just so different from a lot of things they've done. I genuinely think it would be the one top down game in the series that would actually be pretty cool to get a remake of, the world they made for that game is cool as hell. Not many cyberpunk-esque stuff out there with a retro futurist style. Only thing that is close is Fallout, and that's a complete different type of story there. Some of that pre release promo art too my god, Rockstar has been a masterclass for such a long time, it sucks seeing that passion gone from the company these days. I wish they weren't afraid of taking risks. Some of their best games aren't even GTA or Red Dead.

Popular games tend to be popular for a reason, so I'll always try them out to see if I like them.
I only play through games I enjoy though, I have no obligation to follow through just because something's well regarded.

Edit: Oh, but I never play any of the popular free-to-play live service games like Fortnite, Valorant, Apex, and especially never any MOBAs. When I said popular before, I meant for single player games.

I give zero fucks what people think is cool. I played an enjoyed the Dynasty Warriors series since 3 and loads of people think that series is shit.

If I like something, that's all that matters.

I enjoy playing games as I find it therapeutic unless I'm challenging myself on hard mode in certain games. Other than that it's just a way to escape reality for a good while like I work 2 jobs and have my little gaming reselling business going on, so sometimes during the day I like to sit and play my classic favs let the day go by smoothly.

Games for me is something I enjoy because it's just a relaxing hobby to play whenever I can. It really doesn't matter if it's cool to like certain games or not as everyone has different taste at the end of the day, some games that I love may not be loved by other people but I cherish them for the journey I had with them.
