Do you also not care about modern games? And why?

Somewhat, only sports games and series' I've been playing nearly my whole life, new games just don't really appeal to me

I'm not a big fan of Modern games for reasons
-Graphics look to realistic
-Gameplay is too narrative and feels like a movie or a TV show than an actual game.
-Character designs are just generic real life human beings which ruins the imagination of video games as a whole.

The only thing with modern gaming I enjoy are games that have 2D art and callbacks from the 80s and 90s whether be pixelated or have colorful anime designs from a Super Nintendo game.
Would highly suggest trying out Indivisible!

mmm I'm in your same situation(4 gb ram, AMD Ryzen 3 3200u Vega 3) but thanks to Linux I can enjoy some "modern" games, tho no so heavy in requirements. For example these are the last ones I played(I was really surprised when I pressed play and trials of mana started running flawlessly and it looked beautiful):

does it need to for you to enjoy it? I could say this for any medium

not what I mean, I should have been clearer. I'm saying the lines between modern gaming (judging from the fact that hardware was brought up, I assume the OP doesn't mean indie games) and retro are increasingly blurred. Personally, something like lightning returns still feels modern to me, but it is actually over ten years old. Meanwhile square is putting out several remasters/remakes of oldass games per second. personally, it all gets extremely muddled in my mind now.

I guess what I'm getting at is that it feels like this thread should have been titled 'do you care about modern consoles'

I guess not care is a strong way to put it in my case.
My PC is pretty old, so like it won't run stuff from 2017 onwards.
I got a little late when it comes to certain games. Case in point, I only played and beat MGSV and Doom 2016 this year, and GTAV a couple years before. There's rare cases where I see something new but most of the time I just won't be interested, or if I see something somewhat recent that runs here and I'll try it, but I stick mostly to what I'm familiar with. But there's also some franchises I just don't check anymore or just new things I just lack interest, it really depends.

Modern games rarely have any helpful direction in them. You could find bits of helpful direction scattered between older games.

helpful would be worth putting on a spelling test.

Something that nobody talks about very much is the longevity of modern games designed expressly to keep players on their games with content fillers, side missions and trophies. One of the reasons I'm happy with retro games is for their minimalist aspect, you don't feel like you're playing an interactive movie or being overwhelmed by fucking icons and complex menus. The technical limitations of the time encouraged creativity and the development of fun gameplay mechanisms, whereas today they rely entirely on recycled unreal engine assets and ready-made formulas because companies no longer want to take risks with high production costs.

All this to say that I'm no longer the target of modern games, today they want to drastically change the audience to reach another public that would be more conducive to consumption rather than the average male nerd with his GameBoy color.

It's hard to care for Modern TRIPLE A Games when I have been developing a disgust on the Triple A industry the past 8 Years! Along with game series that keep disappointing me!

Another Hyper realistic graphics, live service, now 80 Bucks games normalized, Thank you Nintendo very cool, very cool, very cool, very cool!

Also I'm stuck with an old PC! I prefer playing old games, indies and emulators

i didnt care about them until space marine 2 came out. i just HAD to play it and i upgraded my pc just for that game. it was a great game i loved it i liked that i got to kill aliens i hate aliens.
since i have a better pc ive been playing other modern games i'd been interested in but if it werent for that i'd still be playing whatever ran on my 2gb 1050.

From what year onwards its considered modern in the gaming world?
The 6th generation of consoles standardized the controls and mechanisms that are still used today, while everything that preceded it was still at the experimental, retro stage.

For example PS2 is modern in gaming.

bro, since the last ps2 was made, like half the users on this forum have had ancestors that have walked the earth and died.

In terms of console gaming the last generation that truly captivated me was the the sixth one. In the seventh one I enjoyed a few, the total counted with my fingers, that doesn't justify the investment in my book.
Even if i had the money for modern consoles(ps4 and beyond), there is an almost microscopic number of titles that interest me and most of those also appear on Pc, a decent Desktop is a far better investment in my book.
REALLY!? 6th gen is where you stopped!? I don't know, man. 7th gen (PS3, 360, Wii) has plenty of great stuff and was the last gen that was for the most part purely physical before the "You'll own nothing and be happy" digital only hellscape we live in now.

to be a bit fair, it is kind of hard to care about something if you can't interact with it. i spent most of my life only getting a new game on my birthday or christmas, and then later when i became an adult, getting used games from gamestop and thrift stores and then the internet archive and other sites that i almost don't even think about new releases for systems unless i have the system.
when you can't afford it, it aggravates you to go and look at the new stuff, knowing that you can't get it. why put yourself through that? i forget that the ff7 remake exists most of the time because i don't have the new playstation systems.
and even when you have the money for it; you're not really getting anything in return. most of the game's budget is spent on graphics, and i've seen next gen games look like garbage in comparison to older games. most of the content is bland and generic. devs will tread the same ground over and over again.
hopefully the indie devs will start gaining even more momentum and can push to the top of the food chain. i've seen more games from those people that look interesting to play and are more reasonably priced than the mediocre slop the "AAA" industry can put out.
Here too, one birthday was Super Mario Bros. 2, I had that and the first one until I got SMB 3 for a Christmas. Rentals lol. Lot's of those. Sega Genesis w Streets of Rage 2 for a while. I think I got Batman Returns for the system, I can't recall any more for that system lol.

Age is not a criterion that defines and qualifies what is retro or not. People's ignorance and confusion have contributed to corrupting its real meaning.

I wasn't exposed to a lot of NES games back when I got one in '87. Same for Super Nintendo & Sega Genesis. The rental stores were my main exposure & maybe I would see a Nintendo Power. After a long time I went to a computer school and found a guy playing SNES games on his computer desktop. Using the emulator SNES9x. I started my emulation and retro passion right there. Today I'm more mature about the collecting. There's just so much I missed or had no access to and I'm mentally stuck in an arcade so a modern game with a whole week to learn the controls, and so much dialog, feel completely sucked in and all the hours logged. I've got retro PC Games like Hitman, Diablo II, etc I want to feel further engaged than console gaming could provide. I never even had a Saturn so I'm having a blast here in 2025 going through lots of games. I really like the Japanese stuff and having translations in the Repo really helps, I don't know a lot of Japanese if any.

My main requirement to consider buying a console is that it must have at least 10 games that I really want to play, titles that I know I will really like and the last consoles that met that requirement for me are the Wii, PS2, NDS.

Every once in a while a game comes out that interests me (Ender Lilies and Magnolia) but they are less and less and they almost always have a port to PC so I am less interested in a console.

Online gaming and Internet were a mistake.

by then, it might be on sale, so you'll save money on it and then you can add it to the backlog. and it should also hopefully have all of its patches and updates rolled out as well.
so, it's kind of a better idea to wait a bit before purchasing a new release.
Not to be old but back in 2001, I got hooked on a Diablo game, the first, on a PC in an Apt I moved into, I mean up all the time playing it. When Diablo II came out, I mean, I grabbed it first day. So they got me there but yeah if you've got plenty of good stuff in front of you, then wait. I'm currently finding older stuff I didn't know existed as I go back in time instead.

at the risk of sounding ignorant, confused, or whatever other pejorative you'd like to attach, I'm going to have to side with the rest of the world, RA, the dictionary, God, and this website, and go against your personal definition of retro gaming, especially since the sixth generation all use wired controllers, an implement that we have left behind in the dust as the stone-age tool it is. you may as well be piloting your console with a fire stick.

For the most part, I don't pay as much attention to new releases nowadays. I've played (and have really enjoyed) Monster Hunter Rise and Street Fighter 6, but there's not really enough big new releases at the moment that I'm looking forward to that would push me to upgrade my PC or purchase a new system.

There can still be good releases in the modern era, just as there can be bad releases in the older eras. The hard part for me is finding new games that check all my boxes, really.

Dreamcast, GameCube, and PS2 all had internet modem expansions.
These consoles laid the foundations for the “we can patch it later” and "expansions packs" mindset

That's why i only stick to prior consoles

I've found myself shifting to board games and table top stuff. Never need to worry about compatibility

First of all, this is not my personal opinion but an objective and elitist one. Citing sources like RA that use the same trophy mechanics that plague modern games doesn't add any credibility to what you're saying. Being retro is less about age and more about game design philosophy. The hallmarks of the 6th gen era hasn’t changed significantly aside from increased resolution and polygon count.

The PS2 introduced many modern gameplay systems and its controller (DualShock 2) set the standard for current layouts
