Definitive way to play your favorite games

I settled up

Mother 2 Deluxe, the 3.0 version add two modes for sane people: Original (Basically the original game with QOL) and casual (A notch harder than Original, but still fairer than the intended difficulties, also you get new nooks and crannies)

Magic Build in SMT4. Need I say less.

MediEvil_Box_art_cropped.png

the psx version of MediEvil is one of my all time favorite retro games, ive played it through at least 30 times, it has a really pretty and shiny ps4 remake that ive also played several times over (which you can unlock the og in) but my one point of kinda contention and its really not points against the game but since it improves the controls of the og, it accidentally makes the game way easiser

PC for two big reasons:
Two of my most hated games are the original RE4 on GQ and FF7 on the PSX.
I decided years later to try RE4R 2023 and FF7 Remake Intrograde, and both
those games were INCREDIBLE. The OGs still suck ass though.

no offense, but just because older games are harder and less handholdy unlike modern remake slop, it doesnt mean they are bad, the og RE4 and FF7 still is peak with unique personality and replayability, just try to get good and give it a chance idk. 😉🤷

I hear you brother. But getting good wasn't a problem I was peak back then,
unlike now in my 50s where I have to play everything on easy. lol. The issue I had was
after being in love with the OG RE trilogy I hated the shift to action, I still do. But the 2023
RE4 was done so well I couldn't help but fall in love. As for FF7, I got Intrograde on a good sale price
and was pleasantly surprised. The OG FF7 is my MOST HATED game of all time, all that about its bringing RPGs to the west is a bunch of bull-mess and while I respect your opinion, the game is total garbage. Just look at the re-release they just released AGAIN.

I have actually finished the Popeye forearmed PSX FF7 a few times.
It's not a bad game, I'm just tired of how everyone makes it out to
be this Earthshattering game that changed the world. So maybe it's
not the game that pisses me off just the fans. Maybe like how I hate
the NY Rangers (professional ice hockey team) but I don't dislike the players,
its the fans that piss me off.

*Sigh* Rerail time

If you REALLY want to replay the first 2 Megaten, as in the Famicom ones that predates SMT, you really want to play the Kyuuyaku rerelease, of one:

Early game is easier (Famicom versions can kill you in the first enemy literally)
You get a map by pressing R
Maps that used to be big are axed, granted you still will get lost, especially if you want the map fully explored
Save places, buh-bye crummy passwords
Some annoying parts are simplyfied
Extra demons exclusive of said remake
Some fun Easter eggs connecting both games
And Many more!

Only thing missing is the music feels less good
OG...
,,,Abd Kyuuyaku

Best ways to play Alan Wake and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is on the Xbox 360. Other versions are extra buggy and run worse.

The World Ends With You is a great game, and I even manage to enjoy the Switch port of the game, but it's certainly not the definitive way to play it.

The game is basically fully designed for the DS using everything from the stylus to the microphone. Taking that into account, I think they did a decent job bringing it to a different system, but honestly, if you can get your hands on an R4 card or a copy of the original DS game I can highly recommend that you do so. You'll have a more more enjoyable experience, and you won't hate yourself while trying to defeat some of the harder bosses towards the end.
Man, I dropped the Swicth port like 2 hours in. Couldn't stand it. I don't even think it'd be that difficult to retool the combat for a console, it just felt like they didn't try. The first Twewy is one of my all-timers

Yeah, the controls of the Switch version basically feel like: "how can we crowbar some of the special controller functions into this bitch?" I'm deffo sticking with the OG for now haha.

That bad? I really liked it on the DS, but it was quite clunky even then.

I think I'd hate it passionately on a JoyCon if they didn't fix or adapt it any.

Tales of Symphonia. The GameCube release is the only version with 60fps but it's missing a bunch of bonus content that was added in later releases, and the North American gc version has some minor censorship. So unless the framerate is a deal breaker, I'd recommend one of the remastered releases.

Why should you play Tales of Symphonia? Imagine a long JRPG with a similar kind of storytelling as Invincible. Constant shocking plot developments and disturbing plot twists. Even though the graphics and gameplay are less refined than it's sequels, it's game mechanics have some of the most depth of any tales game. And it has metric ton of optional and missable content. If you hate checklist style games and love the feeling of discovery, then this is for you. Just recently I discovered a chunky sidequest that let me battle one of the villains early. And that's not even mentioning the replay value. There are two distinct story routes, a giant menu of gameplay changes for new game+ and each character has two "styles" that change what abilities they learn and their function is in battle.
Huh. You sold it to me. Gonna dust off my GameCube or see if i can snag the HD for cheap

I did not like the remake of the OG Resident Evil, they made it so damn bland looking and just boring all around. The PS1 original is the best, I’d never recommend the remake to anyone.

Resident Evil 2 is a great game but will say I like the Remake better so I prefer that one but only by a slight margin.

Gamecube port of Twilight Princess, i know the Wii one has more knicknacks and that it works better, but i prefer the OG Gamecube over the fact it was the first actual GCN game i played and it has a sweet spot in my heart, aside i feel the Wii has shoehorned controls and obviously the combat is not as fluid as Skyward Sword's, sadly not Wii U user yet, so i still can't tell how that one stack over the GC rerelease, for the time being, i stick to Gamecube

  • OutRun 2006: Gonna go against the grain and say PSP. It looks really nice upscaled.
  • Resident Evil 4: Original Gamecube release is still my go-to. The Wii port is great, but not because of the motion controls.
  • The House of the Dead 2: The "best" way is via Model 3 emulator with some kind of compatible track pad, but realistically the Wii port is perfectly fine.
  • Sin & Punishment: Star Successor: Wii is the only way. Pointer controls are a must.
  • Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver: The SacredGold hack on a modded DS. Too bad I can't use the PokéWalker, though.
  • God Hand: PCSX2.
  • Shadow of the Colossus: Same.
  • SpikeOut: The only real way is to run it on the Model 3 emulator. It won't work on Fightcade. Otherwise there's a Yakuza game that lets you play it in the arcade, but it's not ideal.

Yeah, this is the case with both late arcade games (anything past the period MAME supports, which is about mid-90s and on) and lots of Wii and DS/3DS software that use non-standard controls. The World Ends With You is another example. You could emulate it and replace the stylus part of combat with a mouse, but IMO it's just weird.
It's cool that SpikeOut is now officially playable on consoles and PCs thanks to that Yakuza game, but it sucks that there's no official, standalone release. If they sold it as a pack on Steam I'd buy the whole series.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. SEGA has been so bad with making their arcade games accessible. Look at Capcom putting out these amazing collections, meanwhile I'm expected to buy a whole-ass Yakuza game just to play Virtual-On.

I would definitively not want to have to play a Switch 2.
This was the definitive thread right?

Well I would love to play the games I grew up with on the actual consoles but I do not have the space for it so an emulator console will have to do.

Absolutely not agree. I can't be more disagree with anything in this world.
Link is left handed, LEFT. I am left handed, and I want Link to continue being left handed, because that was a trait in the character. But in the Wii version they decided to make it right handed, which is not "right" for me.

I am a hardcore left handed supporter. When I was in primary school, I had a teacher who didn't like left handed people and used to hit my hand with a ruler if he saw me writing with my left hand. One day I got fed of it and pushed him so hard that he fell to the ground and I started screaming like a crazy person, I just snapped. And I never regretted it.

Back to the topic, for me the best way to play a game is to first play the original first version of the game, the way it was meant to be played when it was developed.
I'm a left handed too.

I have both versions of directors cut, if you save and swap discs it will boot up and play absolutely fine but the music is changed from the original to the "bad" version

Also, when I played that RE2 demo it blew my mind because the van that is normally blocking an alleyway is gone and leads directly to the police station. So it shows an alternative way through raccoon city
Yeah I love that demo myself. I downloaded it ages ago but I remember my mate getting it with this copy of Directors Cut and we played the demo over and over again.

I know the reception to them is pretty mixed for most people but I really love the Final Fantasy pixel remasters.

If there's something you don't like about any of the games (sprites, music, translation, balancing, etc) chances are there's a mod to restore it with whichever version you prefer and you can mix and match.

the Neo Geo CD version of Neo Turf Masters (AKA. Big Tournament Golf) is the best version of the game as it has an extra course not in any other version: Scotland

for the OG Final Fight, Final Fight One for the GBA and its Arcade and Redux Edition ROM hacks

And for Ms. Pac-Man, the Genesis version

Believe me that you only need to increase Mag and Vitality with a lil bit of Agility when playing Devil Survivor 2

Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst since it has the most content (with three separate episodes), options to play in widescreen and HD and easier to go online.

The Steam version of Half-Life is very competent.

Rez Infinite is the latest and most complete port.

Doom with DSDA.
