Not to dismiss koji's work, but you can't honestly tell me when you fight those shitty bosses in super mario 3d world you feel like the good music fits the tone of the monotones fights, not helped by the fact the franchise has used the same characters or design archetypes for decades, at most i could say bowser gets it pretty good on the galaxy duology, but even then, it's the usual Nintendo-ish cheerful music used in a lot of their games, not that i'm complaining, i'll take it any day over any of sony's modern soundtracks, but shimomura's work on boss themes on the mario & luigi series is definitely superior.
Meanwhile in the ps2 days, a random warship on R&C 3 and optional arena bosses on R&C 2 get almost the same amount of epicity and emotion as the final boss of a game, even shitty or hated bosses like otto destruct or klunk from the psp games get bangers for boss themes, not all of them are great, but most are
