David Bergueaud made better boss music in his 6 year R&C run than Koji Kondo on the entire Mario Series

Not to dismiss koji's work, but you can't honestly tell me when you fight those shitty bosses in super mario 3d world you feel like the good music fits the tone of the monotones fights, not helped by the fact the franchise has used the same characters or design archetypes for decades, at most i could say bowser gets it pretty good on the galaxy duology, but even then, it's the usual Nintendo-ish cheerful music used in a lot of their games, not that i'm complaining, i'll take it any day over any of sony's modern soundtracks, but shimomura's work on boss themes on the mario & luigi series is definitely superior.

Meanwhile in the ps2 days, a random warship on R&C 3 and optional arena bosses on R&C 2 get almost the same amount of epicity and emotion as the final boss of a game, even shitty or hated bosses like otto destruct or klunk from the psp games get bangers for boss themes, not all of them are great, but most are

I honestly preferred David Bergueaud's work in the original two games, especially the first one because it doesn't go for orchestra and instead a unique blend of dark-electronica.
But I do get you. I don't care for Koji Kondo's works, I always preferred Shinobu Nagata for her score in Super Mario Sunshine.

I don't even like sunshine but i agree, a game like that would never be made by the nintendo of today (for better or worse)
Although r&c music being more orchestral by david Bergueaud was more apparent on the ps3 games, TOD did have some gems, but the QFB ones are average

Honestly I revisted the soundtrack again due to this post and I have to thank you. I forgot that Oltanis Orbit's music goes so damn hard it puts me into a whole different world. Going immediately into my playlist
I love how oppressive and heavy this track is holy shit

No problem, but it's concerning that the whole "giving a shit about the music like in the old days instead of just producing generic orchestral stuff that doesn't even sound like good movie music for triple AAA Games" has been a topic of discussion ever since R&C 2016 and before (although michael bross did compose some good music for All 4 One and Into the Nexus, especially the Main themes of those 2 games, unlike QForce and 2016 where everything is as bland as wet cardboard) and the topic i'm referring is pretty much applicable to plenty of gaming soundtracks today, i can't for the life of me remember something out of spiderman ps4 that wasn't the main theme, for crying out loud
Post automatically merged:

Notice how the three crappiest villains in the whole r&c franchise get an epic, conclusive sounding, and even evoke something more than just fighting the final boss, i didn't beat the damn game as a kid, but otto's theme honestly is so great despite the dumb motivation and unfair design, that it actually puts final bosses where koji worked to shame, although i don't remember if he did the ost for 3d land, but it says a lot when the Hight impact r&c titles are more entertaining and memorable than the first true 3d mario handheld title (and i'm not just talking about the music here, 3d land is so boring it makes size matters and Secret agent clank look fun in comparasion)

I feel you. The Final Fantasy VII Remake's soundtrack has been exemplary actually when talking about modern videogame music. It has been given so much love in the music department, it never sticks to orchestra and is not afraid to mix it up and do something else. Nobuo Uematsu even came back after all this time just to give Remake it's special theme song with "Hollow" an incredible song I believe.

I've linked "Collapsed Expressway" in Part 1 and I hope it puts some belief into what I've written. I don't fully agree with Remake's choices ... but it's hard to knock it for things when the music department puts so much care and love into it.

Next to no music in the modern Triple-A age except FFVII Remake has even been slightly compelling to me, and I won't say I completely knock orchestral soundtracks either, it's great when it fits and there is a powerful, compelling force behind the instrumentation that adds to the game's narrative. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn has a mindblowing soundtrack, and it is 100% orchestral. The recent soundtrack for games like Three Houses & Engage really didn't sell me.

Agreed, i personally prefer the fire emblem wii and GameCube games over the 3ds ones, but on the music department each subseries is great.

Still on the r&c and square enix topic...well at least Bergueaud knew how to make good 2 minute music for almost every one of his pieces, something I can't say for yoko shimomura on her work on the kingdom hearts series, as much as i love those boss themes (especially kh 2.5) she mostly did 1 minute themes throughout the series, as great as they are, if we had a theme like the encounter or the corrupted from kh ii actually be a minute longer and have more build up they could have been much better, even her longer music feels like it has no build up or is going in way too fast despite being some of the best of that series, you rarely get something like guardando nel buio (final boss of kh i) or you get wasted potential like shaded truths or rinzler recompiled, and also speaking of the mario & luigi series, her music was great even if repetitive...until the bowser's inside story "remake" where everything feels blander than the original
