Copyright is stupid

Yeah there’s a lot of crazy patents. You know that unique mechanic from Mother 3 where you can hit enemies up to 16 times for extra damage to the music? Yeah that’s Nintendo patented. It’s stupid too since Mother 3 hasn’t released outside Japan so people can barely make their own Mother 3 as is

Did anyone here know that the summon animation for Shiva in FF8 is copyrighted by Square? Neither did I until I was watching Primal liquid play the Ragnarok mod on YouTube.
My issue with copyright isn't that it exists, but that it lasts too damn long. The original point of copyrights and patents was so small creators could have a limited window of protection from bigger entities to profit off of their work, then those works would be made available for everyone to use, but those windows kept getting extended and abused by corporations wanting to use those protections to hoard the control of technology and ideas for themselves.

Copyrighting an IP, or a likeness, or the full product? I agree with that. Copyrighting a throw animation? A specific smile? A brush stroke technique? The entity seeking such a frivolous act should be drug out into the street and shot.

The existence of copyright in itself is fine, but the lack of good sense governing it is what makes it stupid; the breadth, reach and duration of copyright is unreasonably stringent and gets in the way of freedom and creativity.

kind of hard to give an opinion on this unless more details (any) are supplied. On its face, this doesn't seem dumb at all? Like yeah, you shouldn't be allowed to just rip other peoples' work 1:1 and use them in your own products.

Hey guys, faceless corporations need their billions of dollars just like the rest of us.

There was also the case of Namco patenting (I believe) the ability to play games during video game loading screens, hence why no one else ever did it.

Well copyright isn't bad itself.
It made to protect people hard work.
we don't have copyright but I know people deserve something for their hard work.
But that sue Nintendo made for a kid cardboard......well then it is so stupid.

I don't particularly like having to pay for books older than me, some of which are by deceased authors or written before the Cold War. But I accept it as a necessary evil (starving artists and what not).

I'm not cool, however, with copyright poachers... Like, did you know that JonTron's ORIGINAL song "You Are Not A Gnome" was copyright-claimed by someone because it sounded a little too close to Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone", even though that's:

A) Kind of the fucking point.

B) Well within Fair Use.

And don't even get me started on companies copyrighting footage or forcing people to either change the pitch of clips or mirror them in order to "fool" prowling bots.

My issues with copyright arise when companies are able to close fan games and other types of fan works.

I think it's inherently hypocritical to simultaneously seek fame with your work and put harsh limitations on what people can do with it. Let alone when your work is a cultural phenomenon.

But of course, we live in a greedy world. Copyright is not about doing justice, it's about securing control.

So true. These companies would be nothing without their fans.
It's one thing if someone's selling a game, but pure passion projects should be embraced by IP-holders, not shut down.

The copyright for some of those older books might be in the formatting not the work itself as they repackage it to be easily consumed online. Glad that new Cali law now demands Amazon to tell it's kindle users it only gets a license and can be removed at any time at Amazon's discretion not a paid you own it no matter what product, every little bit helps to wake up the masses to see how little their get for how much they pay.

On a brighter note I think the patent for Eternal Darkness's insanity system how it would mess with volume, shut off screen, fake blue screen and such expired if anyone wanted to do that old school system of messing with the player. Bioware might still have their dialogue wheel patent in tact though it really should be argued it's not at unique to implement but what do these old coots know? There should be more safe guards in place to only award those concepts unique and more air tight in their description and implementation not general ideas. Ideas are free and interchangeable and hard discern where the line is drawn of ownership and where the idea is abstract to be considered unique.

Artist A: See this "art" I did? Only I can do it!😎
Artist B: Of course not, I can do it even better than you!😂
Artist A: Yeah, but If you do it, my thugs will hit you in the head with a big club😌

Humans are weird👽

Friendly reminder that the managers of Yellowcard (who had long since disbanded by then) sued Juice WRLD post-mortem and people still blame the band to this day even though they weren't happy with it either

This might be a hot take, but I think the concept of "intellectual property" as a whole is fucking stupid.

Also, I feel like most major companies sue for the sake of stroking their ego.

It's not the FF10 version. For some strange reason it's specifically FF8 Shiva that got copyrighted. The entire summon animation, attack, even her model I'm pretty sure was copyrighted in FF8 specifically.

Nintendo did what? You saying not even the children are safe from being sued for millions of dollars?

It's 2025. Copyright is only for the plebs. Companies have fed their gen AI models with stuff they torrented directly on their laptops so they can now flood everything with slop they don't have to pay humans to produce anymore.

Yep. A kid in Venezuela made a cardboard for playing super Mario, with help he get from his uncle.
They put a video from it on YouTube and Nintendo send agents to sue them for 20 million dollars!
also the meme:
Nintendo destroy this house because there was a kid in there named Luigi.

As it currently is, copyright does more harm than anything else. Either change it for the better (asking the impossible pretty much), or just get rid of it entirely. Anarchy something something.

Pewdiepie getting hit for humming 10 seconds of the halo theme song was pretty wild.

Also my favorite retro anime YouTuber Kenny lauderdale has videos go up and down all the time for copyright strikes…for anime that’s older than most of us and is so obscure the only people who know it exists are Kenny and the people who watch the video.

It’s pretty stupid sometimes

lol

we can talk about copyrights lasting too long, sure, but small artists would get steamrolled so, so much harder if copyright law didn't exist.

Yeah think about all those small artists and their lawyers...
