Japan is known for being a massive cultural exporter, but only recently have we begun to see more Korean and Chinese media in the Western spotlight. If you are unaware, the equivalent of anime/manga in these countries is Donghua and Manwha. Both are severely underrated and don't get enough attention. Is anyone else a fan? :>

I avoid them, they're never as good as manga from Japan. I just don't care about most of the subject material.

Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Legend of Hei are really good. The Chinese animation industry is still developing its style. Accented Cinema did a brilliant video covering this topic. If you're a fujoshi or bat for the other team, definitely a lot of hidden gems. Depends on personal taste I suppose. Maybe it's because I grew up with a lot of Cantonese cinema (Hard Boiled is the best action film of all time btw, love Chow Yun Fat) that I grew a liking to donghua.

See when i look up manhwa the results aren't like that. lol I'll have to check those out.

I got into it years ago with Tamen de Gushi and 19 Days (if I'm not mistaken, those were the big titles of that time). I read two or three more that I don't really remember. I never deepened my interest as everything I encountered was the equivalent of isekai in manga, which I'm not a fan of. I'll check out the ones you mentioned!

Manwha varies in quality a lot, not a huge fan of the art. It's more manga-oriented than donghua.

I think it's because of the internet firewall they have in China that donghua isn't really well known here - and the ones that are, tend to be isekai like you've said. Mobile games i.e. Genshin Impact are the biggest exports here in the West. Russia tends to be like this as well, their internet is somewhat censored and they have their own social platforms and websites with memes and lingo unique to them. We're so used to a globalized world now that media tends to be localised. Always cool to discover some hidden gems. That's how I felt learning about the PC Engine for the first time lol. Like the Library of Alexandria uncovered.
