Changes on Banning System

Show ban records sorted by mod. Lol. Some guy came on here socking after a ban a few weeks ago and all I had to do was guess who banned him.
I don't think that exists, actually.

But, as I said, you have the right to express your opinion and you at least actually say it out loud (which I appreciate).

I just mention that this is not the first time that we refined our rules... and probably won't be the last time either.

Currently, we have decided to use this approach, and we will see how it will turn out.

I'm personally hopeful about this approach.
And we will try to improve it as we go too.

That's fair, I imagine there's not really a perfect "One size fits all" solution to managing an active forum with a game repo together. Here's hoping it works out smoothly for you guys.

This feels like a possible reward for toxicity but I hope it works out as well. That said, just because we can ignore disruptors doesn't mean they should get to play around often either, that's how you turn people away. Maybe the warning stacks are enough though.

After reading this thread I can understand and spike maybe used unfortunate examples, and was also being kind to all doing a type of work for free.
If "legitimately grieved users for being banned too easily in some past instances" instead of "Some banned users gave threats" it would been understandable. To me the initial post reads bit too much that there was users who definitely deserved a ban from example given, being given less hard time, but later given examples, nebulous as they may be, paint a better picture and I am from some experience pretty ready to say it is understandable. Core members being also moderation is good idea but some need to grow into a moderator and system that promotes that and leaves the heavy hitting to core few is what should work out the best currently.

This system upset the users to a point we received all sorts of treats, legal, personal or straight up vowing to destroy the site. Seeing that this can no longer continue for the wellbeing of the site,
forgive me for being naïve but is this really true? do people really do such things over an internet forum?

To me, getting threats over bans people have likely earned is a sign that they need to be banned, not that they need to be appeased.
Yep.
Rules, some of which you get banned right away, etc. all are basic good things on a forum.

Appeasing people who repeatedly break rules of OK social conduct of a place and then resort to threats when they get punished for it are not people I would like to keep around.
Yep.
This system to me is just so soft that a lot of unwanted people can come and stick around as long as they are keeping their shit as a constant stream instead of a bomb.

Like, someone who collects 2-4 strikes every 15 days continuously sounds like someone who could use a longer time out, and this site is a privilege to those who know about it and play by it's rules.
Yep.
So wait people are being asshole and then complain about warnings and being banned and threatens with legal actions or some shit.

Maybe they need to be enlightened that hate speech a Crime that can land them in big fucking trouble.
So warnings or a ban should be their least worries.
I’m going to continue highlighting takes that actually make sense.
More seriously, I also have concerns that this may end up being a bit too soft and encourage certain types of toxic people to be more open and bold with it.
Mm-hm.

Honestly, every bad take in here has been from people I’ve already ignored and are seeing here for the first time in ages.

Is been nice talking to a lot of you, but I don’t want to stay on a site without consequences. I already felt like mods were too soft, so I think this is my actual cue to leave.

Enjoy the worst RGT has to offer, I guess.

Unfortunately yes. :-( Thanks for everything Spike! He’s really seen the worst people have to offer just to keep the site running ❤️

Without revealing too much, were any of the threats actually genuine? Anything beyond just words?

I am...very much not a fan of this, given that it means an antisemite who openly used dogwhistles is now unbanned. Like it or not, some people do need to be thrown out the door, because giving them the same platform as the people they hate just results in those people leaving and the bigots gaining more power. Wouldn't surprise me if I end up seeing myself shoved out the door, soon enough.

Anyway, given the tone of this discussion, I assume people have no issue with me outing that user Popckron used the triple parentheses on words like hedge fund. I know this because I was the one who reported him. Triple parentheses are used as a dogwhistle to indicate someone or something is Jewish (negative).

Incidentally. I initially didn't want to report him, because I knew it'd potentially paint a target on my back if nothing happened. But I figured it was worth a shot, because it let me run an experiment: if he gets banned, this place is safe. If he doesn't get banned, this place is unsafe. He got banned immediately. Now, he's unbanned. Pray tell, what message does that give?

I also saw him making remarks about the evils of Zionism or something along those lines, if it means anything.

He got unbanned because the warning system was bypassed entirely, and he was given no chance to right the ship after being a decent member of this community (on every iteration) for years. I certainly don't agree with the views he expressed, but that doesn't mean he was exempt from standard procedures. I hope he learned and can return to continue posting jokes on the Spanish board and weird art like before.

Unfortunately, it does not. People are nuanced, and not wholly consistent. You can see the issues with zionism and condemn it while still being antisemitic. Even if it was simply edgy humour (though, I doubt that was the case; just saying this for people who want to defend it), that's the kind of thing that's harmful to people.

No, I meant that he was using "Zionist" as a negative synonym for the Jewish people, as antisemites are wont to do. I was actually supporting your assertion.

People have been instabanned previously for similar practices, though.

There was a user who used those antisemite jewish parentheses (who also happened to have Kaiser in their name, which also is a dogwhistle combined with said parentheses usage). That user had been behaving normally and was a "decent member" until that post, and at the very least both I and miguk caught them doing the parentheses and both reported it, and he was banned immediately.

Oh, I'm sorry; my bad for misunderstanding. Used to some stuff that made me misread that. Appreciate the clarification.

What about the transphobes, homophobes & other bad people that you can't ban cause of the new system?
Even if you put them on "read only" mode, they'll wait it out & they can strike again.
Yeah, I'm pretty heavily concerned about this as well.
