Hi everyone,

I’m desperately trying to find a PC game I played during my childhood, likely around the early 2000s. I haven’t been able to identify it yet, and I’m hoping this amazing community can help me solve this mystery.

Here’s what I remember about the game:

Theme: It had a dark atmosphere, similar to a prison, with cages visible in the levels or background.

Score menu: The score menu featured a prison scene in the background, including cages, which left a strong impression on me.

Visuals: Colorful balloons would appear on the screen, probably as part of a celebration or after completing a certain objective.

Release period: I believe the game was from the 2000s or perhaps earlier. I was born in 2000 and played it when I was very young.

Platform: It was a PC game, likely running on Windows 95, Windows 98, or possibly through a DOS-based emulator.

Language: I’m not sure if the game was in English or French.

I’ve already explored forums like Vogons and Reddit and received suggestions like Cool Spot, but that’s not the game. I also checked compilations like Game Pack CD: 40 Best VGA Games, but unfortunately, I didn’t find it there either.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, or if you have even the smallest hint or idea of where I could look (compilations, shareware, etc.), I’d be extremely grateful for your help.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance! 😊
It's a stretch but Peret em Heru?

In fact I remember some 3d games on DOS. Let me check the sites a bit I think I can find it.
What does that mean to find? I haven't found it, copilot tells me it's an obscure game.

Okay here a list maybe it is:
A Nightmare on Elm Street 1996 DOS game
Don't Go Alone 1989 DOS

Hugo's House of Horrors

DOS - 1990

Dismal Passages

DOS - 1992
......
Okay let this one is AI answer:
"Hocus Pocus" - This is a platformer that features colorful graphics and whimsical elements, but it does have some darker themes in certain levels. It might not perfectly match your description, but it’s worth checking out.

"Goblins 3" - This game has a dark atmosphere and features some quirky elements, including colorful visuals. It’s a point-and-click adventure game that might have some of the elements you remember.

"Bad Mojo" - This is a darker adventure game with a unique premise where you play as a cockroach in a creepy environment. It has a very distinct atmosphere, but it may not have the colorful balloons you mentioned.

"The Neverhood" - While this game is more claymation-style and whimsical, it has a unique atmosphere and some darker themes. It features a lot of puzzles and colorful visuals.
  • "Prison Tycoon" - While primarily a simulation game, it features a prison setting and could have elements that match your description.
  • "Escape from Monkey Island" - This game has a mix of dark humor and colorful visuals, though it may not fit the prison theme exactly.
  • "Doom" (with mods) - Some mods for this classic game introduce colorful elements and unique themes, including prison-like environments.
  • "The Incredible Machine" series - While not specifically dark, some levels have a quirky atmosphere that might resonate with your memories.

No need to apologize! It sounds like you're on a quest to find a nostalgic game, and those can be tricky to track down. Based on your description, here are a few suggestions that might fit some of the elements you remember:

  1. "Hocus Pocus" - This is a platformer that features colorful graphics and whimsical elements, but it does have some darker themes in certain levels. It might not perfectly match your description, but it’s worth checking out.
  2. "Goblins 3" - This game has a dark atmosphere and features some quirky elements, including colorful visuals. It’s a point-and-click adventure game that might have some of the elements you remember.
  3. "Bad Mojo" - This is a darker adventure game with a unique premise where you play as a cockroach in a creepy environment. It has a very distinct atmosphere, but it may not have the colorful balloons you mentioned.
  4. "The Neverhood" - While this game is more claymation-style and whimsical, it has a unique atmosphere and some darker themes. It features a lot of puzzles and colorful visuals.
  5. "Little Big Adventure" (also known as "Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure") - This game has a mix of dark and colorful elements, and it features a unique art style. It might not have the exact prison theme, but it has a memorable atmosphere.
  6. "Alone in the Dark" - This classic survival horror game has a dark atmosphere and could fit the prison-like theme, but it’s more serious and may not have the colorful balloons.
If none of these suggestions ring a bell, consider checking out some DOS game archives or abandonware sites, as they often have a wide range of games from that era. You might also want to explore platforms like GOG or Steam, which sometimes have retro games available.

Additionally, if you remember any specific gameplay mechanics or character names, that could help narrow it down further. Good luck with your search!

There are two games I'm sure I didn't make up, both arcade games and both should technically not exist.

Game 1:
One was a Giana Sisters style game where you played as a blue and red girl, they weren't chibi like the Giana Sisters designs but more realistic looking. I remember seeing it in the mid 90's at a big arcade when I was on my way with my grandpa to a new PC game from a store there (Arcade America I believe). So this was around 1996ish.
Being a huge Giana Sisters fan as a kid, it struck me as very odd to see an arcade version with 16bit visuals that was so similar to Giana Sisters/Mario. I know that the demo had both sisters playing co op, it had the amber pipes and everything. The level in the demo was sunset colored.

Game 2:
I was 7 or so and we went on vacation in this lake town here in Macedonia, Doiran. There was an arcade nearby (Macedonia had arcades in the 80's and 90's at every corner and I was living in heaven back then) and one of the games was something that, again, shouldn't exist.
It was Altered Beast but with "chibi" characters and background similar to that of Contra Arcade.
The Arcade would freeze up all the time and I remember the grandma who was selling coins there told me not to play it but I just had to try it out, sure enough it froze up half way through the first level.

I'd say it was the Famicom altered beast in an arcade cabinet, but no, this had 16bit graphics, shading and everything. It's just everything was smaller, chibi designs even. I knew Altered Beast hence what drew me to the game in the first place and this was a lot like it, right down to the bigs or whatever you kill for powerups, but it was visually different.

Ok

I didn't post any information on the game I was looking for, but I just wanted to say that I found the game that has been in the back of my memories since I was little and might possibly be the first video game I ever played.

I found this thread and having already attempted to look up the game in the past, I gave it another shot at looking. All I remembered was that it was a multiplayer shooter for the N64 with sci-fi elements in it and after 30 minutes of googling I found it.

I would sometimes get vague memories of this game and wondered if I made it up. I'm glad I got to see some gameplay of this game and find that it's actually real.

Just a reminder on this thread.
I don't mean to be annoying, I'm just intrigued by this wait.
Sorry, just life keeping me busy by the choke hold, I'll try today if not then by tomorrow. :)

So as I was thinking about the second Java game that I played back in 2012-13, then as I was writing about it being FPS, point & click, pre-rendered graphics, the plot involving a orphan dude going back to his orphanage for some reason and finding strange stuff and having similar vibes to Silent Hill.

Then I thought couldn't it be a silent Hill Java game? And lo and behold it's exactly just that. 😆

According to Wikipedia Silent Hill is supposed to have three Java games but this site has about 6 (orphan being as mobile in EU or vice versa), so I downloaded all of them lol (be mindful of the adverts)

So I'll just move on to the third and final game that I need to look for, which is a Android 2D, side scroller, 3 lane runner game.

No worries, life does have a way of keeping us in a chokehold sometimes. Take your time!

That’s awesome that you found the second game! Must’ve been a great moment realizing it was a Silent Hill Java game all along. Pretty cool how those mobile versions flew under the radar for so long.

As for the third game, the first thing that comes to mind is Gravity Guy, though it doesn’t quite fit the "three-lane runner" part. Do you remember anything else about it? Like the art style—was it pixelated, more cartoony, or something else? Might help narrow it down a bit.

This thread turned out to be a pretty epic win. Did anybody play the java Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo? I'm pretty sure I downloaded my Motorola Razor at the time.

Oh yes I have a lot of details, I was thinking of making a seperate thread for it but I'll just post here.

  • It was played in landscape orientation.
  • It had cartoonish Hand drawn graphics (like the Jetsons & Flintstones, though not 100% like them since the only character that comes close to their design is a blonde girl with twin tails wearing pink dress with skirt)
  • I played it in 2011, downloaded the game's apk off of mob.org (not sure if its still the same site)
  • It had OpenFient in it.
  • It did not exist on Play Store so it was not "logged" in my library.

  • The gameplay was basically a small (midget) kinda dude wearing a beanie would run from left to right after hitting or shoving people, then those people would start chasing after him (sorta like temple run but 2d and without changing the direction).
  • He would spank the blonde that I explained above and she would chase after him, he would shove a big boned dude and make him fall who would then start chasing after him.
  • I think it also had dogs and even a grandpa/granny although I'm not sure about this.
  • The area was basically a infinitely long sidewalk with fruit vendors on it and they played a crucial role.
  • He (the player) would barge through those fruit and street vendors make their fruits and stuff fall all over the sidewalk which would then cause his chasers (the people he hit & ran) to trip over and lose him.
  • Oh and they also try to do a "snatch jump" to catch you, a small animation plays (as a cue) so that you can dodge them by moving up & down a lane (on the 3 lanes i mentioned).

That was the whole premise of the game, it was so fun because the more people you hit the more they will start chasing after you, and you'd had to use those objects from the street vendors to make them lose you.

I was trying to draw it the other day, I basically have a entire Screenshot of this game in mind but I suck at drawing things 😭.
So here's the only two things I sorta managed to draw.
IMG_20250329_092028.jpg

(That blonde grabbing her butt when the player spanks her runs)
(The player who looks like a small person who's wearing a beanie and runs like Naruto while looking back)

Asking about this game on r/tipofmyjoystick was the first thing I did on reddit in 2015-16. I've tried asking about it like four times there but to no avail.
I shared this game with every high School friend of my mine, my brother and even his friends loved this game and a friend of his even asked us multiple times about it over the years but unfortunately no one remembers its name.

I don't like Tetris but I like the" Mighty Gem fighters" game on CPS2 that this game is based off of.

@FR4M3, okay, bro. I must say your description is very detailed, which is good, and the game sounds familiar. I think I've seen it before but not played it.

I've been searching for a couple of hours, but I'm afraid I haven't found any clue about the game. If you remember the device you played it on, I might keep trying.
I highly recommend posting this in a new thread.

I'm familiar with the game. Good mechanics and music. By the way, I'm subscribed to that channel.
