Can You Be a Fan of a Game Without Playing It?

There's an interesting conversation going around on other parts of the internet currently that I've seen brought up a few times over the years. It's this notion that you can be a fan of a Videogame without playing it. And then the counterargument on average states that you have to play a game to be a fan.

Personally, I have a really complicated opinion on this that somehow ends on me being somewhere in the middle. I'll spoiler tag it incase you are more interested in the discussion at hand.

Videogames. Two words, video and game. That's the main point to discuss here if we want to dumb things down.

I have 'performed' dozens of games for the viewing pleasure of my fiancé. Meaning I play through a game she is interested in, but is intimidated by the gameplay. Often times the story is too good for her to miss, or maybe it's an oddity that she wants to gawk at. Plus, we get to spend some time together while doing so. It's great! I love doing it. I call the act 'performing' internally, because I feel like I'm part movie director while I play.
When We played Final Fantasy VII, I delegated voice roles to me and her to read aloud. When I played Death Stranding 1 and 2, I carefully moved the camera as much as possible to make every moment as beautifully cinematografied as possible (which isn't hard in that game, the camera is always considering the rule of thirds.) When she watched me replay Shenmue I and II when the PS4 versions dropped, the only decisions she made was what to do for the in-game day. I did all the driving, so to speak, and tried to pace each day like an episode of a TV show, checking in with her favorite side characters before the action began.
I point this out to say that any deep conversation about the massive Final Fantasy VII universe that we have can only go so far. She can never understand the way that the RPG systems work, or how much better the game would be if it had tank controls (yeah I said it.) Yet despite this, I still would consider her a fan, a fan of the story.

So when the conversation delves into the realm of people who's entire experience with a game is a Youtube Let's Play, and people react harshly, I can't help but kind of take a bit of an annoying centrist position. A real persnickety yes and no.
Can you be a fan of "The House in Fata Morgana" a visual novel, if you never actually played it yourself? I'd say yes 100%. The game is strictly a story, It has no decisions.
Can you be a fan of "Until Dawn" if you only watched a youtuber play it. Eh.. maybe like 70% yes? There's not any hardcore game mechanics you're missing, yet you made no decisions, which is at the crux of the design.
Can you be a fan of "Persona 5" when you've only seen a cutscene movie? Ok we're falling apart here... 40%? You're missing a LOT.
Can you be a fan of "Tetris" when youve only watched grand master gameplay? Definitely not, you just are a fan of the competition, which is fine.
Can you be a fan of "Ico" without playing it? Rock bottom 0%. Absolutely not.

So to make things extremely complicated, I think it depends of the game, and it also depends on the way the debated fan is discussing said game. To embellish on this, I'd like to speak on a old internet friend I used to know. We will call her Aydin.

Aydin was a MASSIVE shipper. You know the kind, endless flame wars with other women online debating fictional relationships. Mainly focused on the shipping wars in Final Fantasy VII, which are particularly toxic at times. (no really, they were and are brutal. i hope some bored youtuber makes a doc about it some day) Extreme personal attacks and flame wars over which bundle of pixels wanted to fornicate the other bundle of pixels. I was friends with this person mainly because we lived close to each other for a few years and met up once, they were quite pleasant. I always enjoyed spectating the conversations Aydin would get into, it was a window into a world I never knew, and she was seemingly an even bigger fan of one of my most beloved games than even me, so I would often learn things from her posts. We remained friends for years, starting around 2014.
This all kind of fell apart for me one day about a year after Final Fantasy VII Remake came out. We were discussing back and forth about mechanics in the new game compared to the original, when she dropped a bomb on my head.

"Oh yeah, I wouldn't know how it compares. I've never played the original."

I was flabbergasted. This person who I considered for the better half of a decade to be an expert on one of my favorite games had never even played it. I couldn't believe it... I myself had watched the occasional playthrough of a game I had never played, but to think that someone who had done the same could have such a strong attachment to said game, I couldn't get it. We went back and forth on this, and it took a while for us to settle on each others opinions, but eventually I had to concede. In some form or way, she was absolutely a fan of Final Fantasy VII, just a different one.

So there's my long winded, and ultimately inconclusive opinion. The truth is that subjectivity rules here, and there's plenty of people in fandom spaces that are secretly on a whole different level of engagement than you. Isn't that fun?
Personally, there isn't a single game that I consider myself a fan of that I haven't played. There used to be, but not anymore. That's a story for another thread I already made a while ago.

Below in a separate spoiler box are some screenshots of tweets about this that made me laugh. People on there are comically hostile in a way that I can't help but enjoy.

So what do you y'all think? Is watching a gameplay video equivalent to playing a game? Is accessibility a considering factor? Have you ever been a fan of a game that you've never played? Would love to see some hearty RGT discussion on the matter.

When I finished MK1 on YouTube, I made a point of saying that I loved the plot, not the game itself (and even though I like the Resident Evil lore, I can only play the 1st one).

See, this I hard disagree on. If we all adopted this position, then anyone wanting to get into our favorite franchises would get pushed away because they decided to engage with the most popular game.

The most popular game is often a stepping stone to get deeper into a franchise. You can't expect everyone to get on your level before they decide to open their mouth. Plus, when it comes to Final Fantasy as we've been discussing throughout the thread, each game has an insular community. FFXII fans have very little to speak about with FFVII fans, the games are so radically different from each other regardless of them technically belonging to the same franchise.

I sometimes get frustrated with the surface level engagement that people have with my favorite franchises, but the way to improve things is to encourage people to dive deeper. Being loudly exclusionary brings nothing to the table.
I agree that the most popular title gets people interested in the franchise (FF7 is my first Final Fantasy anyway) but these games reach such a plateau of popularity that it overshadows other games in the franchise , i think the most important installment in a franchise is those first ones which set up the rest of series especially Final Fantasy

The "better" games won't be as good if it wasn't for the flaws of the previous ones , once you grasp this concept or this idea you will come to cherish the franchise more and adore it more because you have an understanding of why FF7 is so fluid for example compared to previous games

Those who "larp" let's call them here larpers who ignore gameplay only adore certain parts but haven't gotten the full picture of why it's this way

I view it like that , but i won't gatekeep the franchise or get into fights with people for not being "real fans"

Depends on the game, I have no problem with people being fans if they appreciate it, thats cool!
but it would also be a little bit silly in some instances to oversell yourself on the knowledge and then when it comes to a deeper discussion you draw a blank on certain subject matter, for example.. Silent Hill 2, If I had a chat with you on specific symbolism, lore etc and you didn't know much... kinda sticks out.
Either way. if you dig the characters, music, let's plays, watched a friend play, Yes, I believe overall it's a-ok to be a fan, just be honest with what you know.

IMO, only if you actually show interest in playing them, because otherwise I'd call you more an enthusiast than a fan. Applies to not just official games, but fan games too. I hold this logic with shows too, if you're more interested in video essays than watching the actual thing, then you're an enthusiast to me.

If you're more interested in watching cutscenes on YouTube than playing, that's an enthusiast to me. No I am not the annoying type to say LARP LARPERRRRR, but I do know a fair amount of people would prefer to watch Drakengard than actually play it because the "gameplay is bad," and idk that sounds like you're not a fan right?

I agree with the sports example, you can be a fan of any sport without playing it, but that involves watching it. It means you're directly involved with it.

With videogames, I think it's the same as music, movies and books: would you be a fan without listening, watching and reading them? Or, going back to the sports example, would you be considered a fan without playing nor watching?

I think just reading about a game or watching trailers, at least in my case, gets me hyped to play it, like I'm feeling with Stellar Blade right now. I'll be a fan when I play it.

You can be a fan of sports without playing it because you watch it and learn the game and have a team.

IMO it’s not the same when it comes to things like video games, movies, music….these are things you have to personally dabble in and experience. You can be a fan of the idea like for example, I like zombies and vampires so I’ll always like the idea of them in video games and movies but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of a particular series just because they’re in it and I’ve watched trailers. If I play the game and like the gameplay and the story then yes, I’m a fan of the game. If I watch trailers and think “cool, zombies!!”…… that doesn’t really make me a fan as I didn’t experience the whole game myself, I just looked at snippets of a game.

Very good example. I'm a fan of RPGs as a genre, and a fan of all the Final Fantasy titles I've played and liked. Clair Obscur seems amazing and I'm drawn towards it for being a genre I like, but I'm not a fan, since I haven't played it yet.

Im a pokemon fan yet ive played very little of the titles on offer i love pokken tournament though and the game boy advance era of games is my thing.
Had lets go pikachu for a while which is basically pokemon yellow in colour and modernised.

Well people fap to characters of IPs that they never played so eh yea i guess

I'm not sure if "fan" would be the right word. Respectful seems more apt. For instance, I've never played a mainline Touhou title. Not because I don't have the technical ability to do so...I just dislike shooters because I absolutely suck at them and I'd rather not make myself frustrated of a well-known insanely difficult series. But that doesn't mean I don't like Touhou. I like that characters and design. I like the backstories created to engage the player while they weave around geometric swarms of bullets. I respect the gameplay and the artistry of said swarms. In that, I am a "fan" of Touhou, but the only Touhou games I will likely ever play are the spinoffs like Luna Nights.

No, you cant. Specially in this current age when the usual individuals comes says they are 'fans' only to claim there are problems and get internet points.

A video game is an interactive media: it shows somethings, receives input, and then shows that output while it waits the next one. Is not a sports or movies where the whole point is to watch the results or the match, it is no tabletop where part of fun is assembling/painting plastic army men. Video games are to be played.

Not playing them but claiming you are a fan is the equivalent of just reading the results of some sports team on the 'Monday resume' but claiming 'Im a big fan of the Patriots', you never engaged with the team or the sport in any way.

Yes, one can be a fan

A paraplegic can be a basketball fan even without playing on the court

BUT

Can one be a credible source or even an expert commentator/critic?

Nope. Never.

One NEEDS to go into the oven to fully understand how hot the heat is

So one is free to say "I like that game" (subjective) but not everyone is credible enough to say "my statement is correct" (objective) and be accepted as fact

Liking is never equal to knowing

P.S. Proclaiming oneself as a VG expert by watching tons of videos without touching the game is the same as proclaiming oneself to be a Sex God by watching millions of porn videos without even being sexually intimate with another person
Well I have nothing more to add than that, yup the bald bandana hunter nailed it.

Honestly this is the best take i saw on the topic so far, you can be a fan, and can enjoy it, but playing it is kinda better if you ask me, it's like watching movies, believe it's a whole different can of worms between hearing about them or watching clips on any site, than watching it fully in any way.

I would add the point that Mal said to be also true.
Just considering that we all play games differently alone should be enough to say something, imagine if someone told you "you cant have an opinion on this game cause you didnt play it the way i did", this feels the same to me.
If the game gives me options, then the developer is giving me freedom to do what i want, if there's a choice, there's not a definitive way that has been set in stone to do things in a game. For example any Souls game or any RPG, we can have our way in different manners as we are unique in our ways.
