Both Akagi and Kaiji are in my top 5 favorite manga of all time.
The other three are Bobobo, OPM (ONE’s webcomic version) and Cromartie Highschool

Kaiji is super funny and crazy. I tried to watch Akagi but it was all Mahjong and didn't understand anything. Maybe I will watch it again to play the minigame in the old Yakuza games.

I think all the autor writes are a reflection of new generations being abused by old ones? At least Kaiji was about boomers being trolled by rich old mens that used The Bubble to be even more rich or something like that.

I really like Kaiji, has some really cool mind games, and some very creative ways of playing games. There are some Kaiji Touhou crossover doujins which are hilarious as well.

As for Akagi, haven't seen it, all I know, its the eternal Mahjong arc.

Good taste. I haven't read the other three, but I might check them out. Funny how all of them have funny but unique artstyle.

I forgot to mention Ten
I imagine you’ll love Ten if you already enjoy kaiji

I joined Kaiji after seeing a Chilean Reviewer review it, (six years before the Squid Game was a thing) i find refreshing the tone of the anime means you legitimally doubt if the Mc will win

I'm a fan of some Fukumoto works, but I've never ready any of the mahjong stuff, and I also recommend everyone check out his non-mahjong work. A really good 10-volumes series is Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa, about a middle-aged man with no friend, no girlfriend, and a dead-end construction job doing all he can to change his situation. It's got comedy, drama and a little action, and goes to unexpected places. Some scenes from this series have stuck in my mind for years.

I'm a really big fan of Akagi, for a simple reason...

Kaiji is my goat, and that Taniuchi OST gives me life

I am learning Mahjong right now through Mahjong Souls to actually understand Akagi and part 3 of Kaiji, but it's just so complex! So many rules.

You bet! Read and seen almost all Fukumoto's works and still waiting for the latest arc of Datenroku Kaiji to continue, it's been forever.

I've discovered it thanks to me being interested in Mahjong for a short time span.

And this video is interesting

I used to make shitty edits to the series yeah I fucking love it, genuinely life-changing series.

Probably my favorite series/mangaka, FKMT is up there with Osamu Tezuka and Naoki Urasawa for me. Some Kaiji/FKMT Pikmin fanart I did a while ago.

Yes, though I've only seen half of the first series at this point. I guess I should go back and finish it sometime soon.

Akagi is possibly the most soulful mahjong anime/manga series that would make Kaiji blush, but I love the both of them either way.

Reminder that he will basically never get to work again because he got arrested for weed in Japan.

Kaiji is seriously so good, basically the perfect gambling manga character, I tried to get into Akagi but the power dynamic is inferior to me. It's a very different kind of fantasy wish fulfillment when the joy in Kaiji comes from watching him pull off a win that he has *no* business getting. I couldn't get past the Mahjong arc in the manga but I generally liked the anime adaptation a bit more anyway.

I've heard mixed things about the live action movies, some people (FKMT himself) insist they are good, and the chinese version is the only one generally agreed upon to be bad.

i only read "the legend of the strongest man, kurosawa!" by him. i really really liked it.
its about a middle aged man who realizes he never did anything with his life and starts trying to. it tackles a lot of themes about the role of the modern man in today's world, focusing on the subject of standing up for yourself even if its a losing fight.

i tried reading its sequel, shin kurosawa, but i dropped it because i didnt really like it. if anyone ever read it through the end let me know if it gets better after the red light district arc cause that's when i dropped it.

Only read the first chapter, and it seems very interesting. Me (22) finding a 44-year-old relatable is pretty concerning though ::nervous-prinny
