Alternative Names/"Nick Names" that you despise people give to genres, which either makes no sense or is stupid.

Calling all brawlers "button mashers" always irked me. It's usually said by people who don't know a single thing about them or only play bad ones and almost never any good ones. If they did, they did not know how to play the game, and just randomly hit buttons, always expecting the win. Then blame the game like it was never their own fault in the first place

I feel this like a fury, since "Souls-Like" and "Pokemon-Like" makes me want to kill someone. "Souls-Like" is just an empty moniker, because there is nothing about those games that is so quintessentially unique that you couldn't just call them "ACTION/RPGS" like they are. I mean, Jesus, it's really just the result of a fanbase huffing their own fumes. Also, it conflicted with the Soulcalibur series, since that was composed of Soul Edge, Soul Blade, and Soulcalibur. Soul, Soul, Soul. Which was extra funny when Bloodbourne and Elden ring came out, since then they had to scramble in order to find a new thing to identify themselves with....(cont.)

Pokemon-like or Poke-Clone brings my piss to a boil. Like, molten magma levels of ass mad. We seriously have failed to recognize that there are other games that have come before or since Pokemon in over 40 years? Like, imagine we were still calling FPS' "DOOM-clones" like we did in the 90s. Like, still? I'm sure this is a Nintendo psy-op to keep their precious cash cow in vogue, but no one...NO ONE!? Nobody wants to come up with a name for these games!?

I do agree with you on using Pokeclone for everything but....I use Monster Taming as a term myself ^^; But I mainly only do it because a smaller channel uses that term and I personally like it even though it doesn't describe all monster collectors. And yeah, I'm glad they didn't attach "Soul" to anything, being a Soulcalibur fan in this day and age is pain imo. Kinda hate how the "slop gamer/social media" community (yeah im inventing a dumb term rn lol) only cares about stuff that brings YouTube clicks, like god forbid they play an actual oldschool fighting game instead of FromSoftware stuff that makes them feel like they fit in.

Also I guess a term I sort of dislike would be "friendslop"? I've been seeing more games that fit that bill pop up ever since someone used it. I don't play multiplayer games (Peak, etc.) but yeah if you dislike a genre the best thing you can do is give it no attention since it seems like "friendslop" might really be on the rise at the moment.)

That term is usually made by insecure douchebags who don't wanna admit that they're having fun with their friends, or are afraid enjoy something in life in genera. Co-op games have existed for a long time, and that's always part of the fun when you're playing with friends and family. There is nothing "slop" about it.

I do agree that "fun" is an entirely subjective concept and doesn't mean the game is objectively good.

Of course, a boring game is rarely good but at the same time someone can have fun with a legitimately bad game like people enjoys "so bad it's good" type of movie.

I agree because in harder difficulties it requires more than button mashing.

On the other hand a lot of ARPG do suffer from button mashing gameplay outside of bosses and some technical enemies...

Some games are streaming bait but I agree that friendslop is a stupid term.

Some games are meant to be streamed sure but some games are made for cooperation without being made for streaming in mind.

Speaking of which are people still playing Lethal Company?

ARPG don't represent all brawlers of the non-RPG variety. Also, there are plenty of good brawlers that are ARPG and you can't just button mash to win.

  • Guardian Heroes
  • Code of Princess
  • Castle Crashers
  • The later Ys games
  • River City/Kunio-Kun franchise
  • Sengoku Basara
  • Most Musou titles, but especially the Hyrule Warriors spin-offs.
  • Oneechanbara Origin
  • Knights of the Round
  • Absolum
  • Odin Sphere Remake.

Search action I sort of get, but it still to vague, because there are plenty of non-Metroid style games, where searching is part of the action or is the action. You're doing a lot of searching in the early Resident Evil games, and most old-school survival horror games in general.

Sorry for the late answer but which Ys games are you referring to?

Search/Action sounds like it was made by people that wants to avoid saying "Metroidvania"...

Wouldn't it be more apt to say "exploration platformer" since MVs are most of the time platformers and their main appeal is exploring the world?

Ys VIII and afterward. They are pretty much using Bayonetta Witch Time when you dodge, and characters have actual combo moves. I never actually played the game, but I did see a few playthroughs here and there. Along with a few reviews beforehand.

Better by comparison, but still pretty vague. You have plenty of non-MV platformers like the original Wario Land and VB Wario Land where you are rewarded for exploring alternate routes, hidden paths, or off the beaten path. Treasure, unique power ups, or in the case of the original GB title, go to an alternate world level that is different from the one you left by finding the secret exit. Which is something Super Mario Land 2 did beforehand. Or games like Sonic CD where the Zones are all open-ended to some extent and you have to explore and platform to find the roboticizers in the past and destroy them to get a good future for each act in the zone. Or collect at least 50 rings to get the Time Stones and collect all 7 to get permanent good future. Sure, there is an end goal level and got to the next stage, but you are rewarding for exploring or finding different pathways.

Even Castlevania III got in on this with the alternate level selection and the partner system. Then there is Rond of Blood where you go to different stages that were either harder or easier depending on where you looked, and had to find all of the missing women Dracula kidnapped. Bloodlines certain areas Eric can reach that John can't and opens new paths. It's the same vice versa, but Eric gets more opportunities to do this.

Basically, a lot of 80s and 90s action platformers that weren't MV style did this a lot.

I was looking at PSN, and they have a "Stylish Action" section, and while most of the games make sense (enough), there are games on there, which are not even close to the genre. Why the fuck is the Borderlands Collection there? Returnal and Travis Strikes Again I would not call close to "Stylish Action" either.
