Alternative Names/"Nick Names" that you despise people give to genres, which either makes no sense or is stupid.

For example: The term for Character Action is stupid. I don't know who started the terminology like that for Devil May Cry style games, but it's generic and does not make any sense. Almost any type of game has a character doing an action. I do know that more people started using it after the Former Two Best Friends used the term in many videos that involved or discussed DMC style games.

Just call these genre of games Stylish Action. That's what they were called back then, when more variety came out of the wood work back in the early 2000s. Even then, you still had people use the term DMC clone back in the day. Hell, Spectacle Fighter sounds more dignified by comparison. At least it makes a certain amount of sense. If not any of those, call them beat'em ups, hack n' slash, or brawlers. All of these genre have crossbred multiple times back in the 2D era, 3D era, and now. Though I began to hate that not long afterward and was tired of the "joke" Yahtzee started long before he did. Thankfully, both of these terms mostly crashed and burned, but it was annoying hearing them unironically, or seeing them in the Steam tags a lot of the time.

Aren't those kinds of games basically just 3d beat em ups? Most of them play basically the same as something like Double Dragon with fancier moves and more cut scenes.

Metroidvanias.

"This game is just like Metroid and Castlevania!"

"Wait... but isn't Metroid also like Castlevania, and vice versa?"

"Uh... yesn't...??"
I hate the name Metroidvania. I never understood why they combined the two games Metroid and Castlevania into one name.

Great topic idea, man.

I HATE 'Doom-clone' because it immediately despises a game just because it shares similarities with a more well-known game. It's super hypothetical, too — pretty much every RTS ever borrows core elements from Dune II, yet no-one is going around denouncing 'Dune-clones'.

Exactly! I stated this with the crossbreeding, but you are 100% correct!. Hideki Kamiya said this a long time ago. The only difference being Kamiya said he was inspired by arcade games/arcade style games in general. Examples mainly being Final Fight and/or Castlevania when talking about DMC1 and Viewtiful Joe.

Because it sounds "catchy", marketable, and "easy to understand/get it".

At least that term died by the time of games like Deus-Ex, Half-Life, and System Shock 2. So basically by 1998, the term had mostly fell out of practice, and first person shooter became a much better and neutral term.

Ironic, as Castlevania only had "Metroid like elements/open-world" two times in the 80s. Vampire Killer on the MSX, and Simon's Quest on NES.

I think we changed one bad term for another, though.

Now that people are making games under GZDoom, we get... 'Boomer Shooters' *GROANS*.

The irony is that they techncially should be called Gen-X Shooters, but I assume it didn't have a strong ring to it.
When I break games down to the bare bones, I'm left with only two genres: good and bad lmfao
That's never enough for the gamers, casual or hardcore. They need MORE!

Gen-X Blaster has a ring to it though 🤣

Rogue...anything. At this point I am suffering from so much rogue-fatigue, everywhere you look
its roguelites, roguelikes, action roguelites, rpg roguelikes, platformer roguelites, strategy
roguelikes... It's all starting to just look the same.

The only rouge-likes I care about are Double Dragon Gaiden, and the bonus modes for Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge. I've gotten sick of term and genre especially, and go out of my way to not even bother with them, if I get a hit of it. Absolum is the best brawler my ass, Max Dood. The run back sucks, and it might as well be a Dark Souls game with a shitty randomizer!

I think the name's kind of stupid but it does pretty well to encompass a specific subgenre of action-adventure games. But personally I feel like the two styles of games play differently enough they shouldn't necessarily be grouped together.

Apart from the map and vague item progression in SoTN I never really saw the similarities between Super Metroid and SoTN style castlevanias. The Castlevania style games always remind me more of games like Zelda 2 or Faxanadu. Rpg style stat systems and inventories really change the way the game is played and take the focus away from incremental upgrades that both slowly empower your character and open more things to explore and more into creating character builds and fighting bosses to progress.

No kidding, & whenever a guy mentions roguelike in their game recommendation. I would leave the room.

They are simply two top games. They probably thought, "Let's combine two best-selling products into one name."Okay, the idea behind it is brilliant.

Hack 'n' Slash was good and catchy... I wonder what happened to it.
It never disappeared. Just like brawlers or beat em ups, they are still here. Check the tags on STEAM, eShop, or PSN. Even if the tags were never there, no one can erase them. Not the haters of the genres. Not the video game journalist, and most certainly not some greedy executives at the top, whom don't know even know close to what they're talking about.
