Zelda Megathread

I've sung the game's praises like a bluebird many, many times on RGT, but I suppose it's worth reiterating here that Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link is my favourite one. It's challenging and mysterious, but rewarding and exciting in equal measure, and I truly do adore the game's sense of progression and atmosphere. I can't think of a game from the 8-bit era that I like the story of more. It's been in my top 10 list since the day I completed it. The Shotaro Ishnimori manga adaptation is excellent too, of course – he was a great guy to work on a Zelda property.

I don't know if I need a sequel or spiritual successor to Zelda 2 (there are a ton of clones of it on the NES and especially the Famicom), but I do think it could use a remake. People, even hardcore fans of the series, always dismiss it as "that weird hard one", and it is both very weird and very hard, but it's a really terrific, unique game that blends fast-paced action and slow, intellectual discovery very well. If you play it, I truly would advise you not to use a guide, cheats, or any form of walkthrough. Take the time to play the game by its rules, and you'll learn to love it.

Outside of 2, I guess I'm a weird pariah in the Zelda fandom because the other ones I like most are 1, Minish Cap, Four Swords Adventure, and Breath of the Wild (I haven't played ToTK, but I'm pretty sure I'd like it, too). I'm not crazy about Link's Awakening (any version, and I think the remake's graphics are honestly pretty awful) nor really any of the pre-BoTW 3D ones, so feel free to murder me in my sleep. I'd really, really love to play Zelda's Adventure someday – I hope it gets decompiled, because the game looks right up my alley. The 80s cartoon is absolutely fantastic, too, of course.

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess was my first Gamecube along with Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door and I still have it since I was kid including the manual

and yep, I'm a Zelda fan and Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game

HELL YEAH, another Zelda 2 enjoyer!
I completely agree with you that it feels mysterious. It’s got a certain feel and atmosphere that teleports me to 1987 instantly (no other NES game really manages to do this), I love almost everything about it.
The fact that it’s not referred to very much and has music that’s never been repurposed for other Zelda games just helps add to its uniqueness.
It’s like the ultimate NES-era, Nintendo Power-feeling, 80s gargantuan Nintendo-feeling game. It’s one of those old games where the different perspectives and primitive graphics REALLY fuels the imagination and makes the adventure feel massive and immersive.

The boss of DotEmu once said in an interview after they had developed the ’Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap’ remake that his dream remake was Zelda 2, and I REALLY hope they’d be allowed to work on it one day, because I adore everything they’ve done and I think they’d NAIL it.

What people don't understand is that Zelda 2 is THE SECOND GAME IN THE SERIES!!! Of course its different. They were trying things out and experimenting, and honestly its not even a bad Zelda game or a bad game in general. Its unique and different.

So what’s everyone’s favorite Link design?

For me, it’s definitely his depiction in the Oracle games!

I think this design is more or less perfect. I like that he’s younger (as I’ve always preferred younger versions of Link), I love how his outfit looks vaguely ”magical” and fairy-like with the boot cuffs, popped collar and huge hat. I like his long locks and that his shirt and pants are different colors.
Love my dwarf Link.

What's the general consensus on the Link's Awakening remake like now? When it released people were hating hard, but I quite liked it. The art style in my opinion was fun and different and it really was a good way to translate the GBC style into 3D well.
As we know they tried to do something similar with Pokemon BDSP but those games are bad for a multitude of reasons, I honestly enjoyed the Link's Awekning remake a lot though.
I loved it and wish that Nintendo would remake the original Zelda in that style.
The original Zelda is by far my favorite game in the series and I enjoy the top down style of games over the 3D ones, however those are still great.

I like him, but also, honourable mention goes to this design:

Don't think it really counts since its a short one time thing, but damn growing up this was the coolest thing ever.

That's one of my favourites, too.
I'll stick to my favourite Zelda games answer and go with these two bad boys:

Classic style Link. Nothing else to say, really. I just love it.

The cartoony (ish) nature of Wind Waker Link makes it really appealing, at least to me. The colors are bright and vibrant, and it feels just good to look at.

Honorable mention:
Game & Watch Link

Totally!
Fierce Deity was such a schoolyard rumor for me. Nobody I knew managed to beat Majora’s Mask (at least not with all masks) so everybody just gushed over this seemingly made-up ”Oni Link” as we called him back then.

I also love round nose Link!

As a kid I was too scared to play it by own, so I ended up watching YouTubers beat it (shout out old-school ZeldaMaster videos) so that's how I knew that thing was for real.
It wasn't until I started highschool that I played through it on my own.

I'm partial to the Link to the Past design with the floppy hat.

I recently played through Seasons and Ages with the passwords and stuff. I'd only played Seasons as a kid and never got to link them.

It was really freaking cool. Seasons/Ages are up there for my favorites of the series. They don't beat Link's Awakening, which will always be my favorite I think.

I first started playing the first Zelda game after playing Super Mario Bros. back in 1992. I had a fun time playing the game until I got scared when I first entered the first dungeon. I turned the game off and don't want to play any Zelda game. But then when I got Ocarina of Time, I started to overcame my fear of Zelda and finally got to the series.

I know. It's only the second game in the series. And it's not like there weren't any popular games with sidescrolling combat at the time. Zelda 2 should never be viewed solely through a modern lens.

My favorite Zelda is Majora's Mask by the way.

Wind Waker Link is just such a good design, a good artstyle is future proof, even playing the OG Wind Waker doesn't feel too dated.

I also like Twilight Princess Link cause he is cool, and the wolf form is badass.
