Youtube Retro Gaming Title/Thumbnail Trends That Annoy You

I hate how HBomberguy’s “X is Y and here’s why” has been adopted by the torrent of pretentious video essayists that sound like they have a knife in their chest.
It’s such an open title that it can mean anything. It could be a biography of a celebrity, a game review, or just an internet drama vid.
It’s practically a tame clickbait.
Sometimes i wish Youtube would just wipe their catalogs and then we could go back to Cat videos... That would be nice.

Bandwagoning off of any older title's fifteen minutes in the limelight for the modern day. Purporting that "this game is a hidden gem that you've never heard of...", when they won't care to talk about it after the fact. Effectively a longplay merged with confessional humblebragging for people to eat their food to and watch instead of bothering to play the game themselves.

This happened with Baroque when it got its Saturn Translation patch. Same with Marathon when it got brought back as an Escape From Tarkov clone. Just annoyed me to no end lol

Basically what I gathered from this thread.

I'm probably a bit guilty of some things bigger YTers do, but I'm at least trying to make something interesting every once in a while. Whole scenario stemmed from a video I made that was practically a shitpost with no expectations, only for it to blow up spectacularly overnight. Since then, I've been in that weird position of finding a direction. I just hope my efforts are actually worthwhile to others, while giving some light to some genuine obscurities.

this is just speaking on youtube as a whole but i really dont like how large of a role youtube has played in taking over global entertainment. even if television was often braindead, it was crafted to serve as a lenses for elsewhere as a window into something beyond itself however shallow. but now with youtube entertainment has just become this state of endlessly chewing up reality and spitting it back out. its not a gateway anymore just a hall of mirrors and despite being a person who distances himself from that this still gets to me because it manifests in other ways. not in the way where i shake my first at the sky to curse people for their taste in entertaining themselves throughout the day, but in the way where i sit in a room full of people and realize i dont know if im talking to them or just some algorithmically refined amalgamation of all the videos theyve watched. conversing with people used to feel like understanding a person and peeling back their layers seeing what makes them tick now its just a game of "spot the source of the script." this isnt just online or real life its just everywhere reality as we know it, it unironically has become a world where everyones speaking but no one is saying anything. its disorienting and generally demotivating to my drive to want to socialize with people at times

Yes.

And just like what happened with the AVGN, the imitators often don't know what made original work.

This one truly got it, though:

Showing the user's actual face in almost every video. Now what I mean by this is the following: there is no need to photobomb yourself in EVERY damn video, especially with games. I rarely show my face on camera and only because of two reasons, the lighting in my room isn't very good plus what I show on my own channel is the real star of the show, I'm simply the guy playing the game.

This is likewise my stance on photography/videography in general. I have no intentions of ever showing my face; I exist as a narrator, through and through. This also extends beyond the channel, as there are very few photos of me that even my direct family have.

might be just a pet peeve of mine but there are a lot of Youtube title and thumbnail trends I that I just find really annoying to see, especially if it's on multiple videos from different channels. This is one I've been seeing a lot recently. Saying a game is "stuck" on a platform. Just sounds so stupid, trying to paint exclusives in a negative light just for clicks. There are thousand of games that will never be ported to a modern console, we'd be here all day if we continue talking about "stuck" games. In the age where almost everything can or will be emulated there's really no excuse for not playing a game you want to play. Having a game built for specific hardware shows off what you can accomplish with it, devs are always trying to optimize for the target platform. It's only natural for games to be tied to the hardware they're made for.
Anyway, just felt like ranting over something that doesn't really matter in the long run, sometimes it's nice to vent. What are some that get under your skin?
I guess like, the main thing that annoys me is seeing lots of videos being recommended of retro games I know of already, or clickbaity trash. I like to hear of a lot of other games beyond the ones I know ya know.

As for exclusivity, I don't mind em since they're not too prevalent as much as it was prior console generations. I got a lot of older games through roms & ISOs so that tends to be my go to. (emulation) My only problem is like, super influential games like Shadow of the Colossus (the original) or Ico or the original Yakuza 1 & 2 you gotta emulate. Like how come I can't purchase em on modern consoles and enjoy em?

Why are remakes being the only way for specific titles when maybe that might be not my interest. *cough cough SH2* I get not all games can be ported easily or that there will be ones that are stuck in licensed hell, but some of these are very significant games. It's weird because PC games like Quake 1 & 2 at least have modern remasters that preserve the original vision of the team very well imo.

Not to mention recent recompiles and compiles of things like SF64 and Ocarina and Majora. Mario 64. Jak 1.

they all seem to do that "thumbnail face" like either they're screaming/roaring at someone or they have that shocked o-face thing going on

I think it's easier to say what's not wrong with youtube rather than what's wrong with it... or modern internet in general.
One day I got so fed up with this shit that I did nothing but watch Zelda CDi poop videos the entire morning.

Btw I use an extension called Remove Youtube Suggestions :3
There's even an option to disable it temporarily (10 minutes, 20, you choose)
Holy Flying Spaghetti Monster! This is such a fantastic extension! I can't believe I've never heard of it until now. Thank you so much for bringing it up, Ciro! Youtube has been giving me mind cancer!

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this already in the thread, but I abhor, absolutely DETEST those fucking titles that say the most inane shit possible.

"How X Broke Me"
"The Best X You've Never Heard Of"
"The Bizarre World of Y"
"X is an Underrated Masterpiece"

All nothing statements and nebulous phrases that add nothing to a conversation and come a place of pretentious wank , yet they all seemingly have no problem spending almost an hour speaking in circles. It is poison to the mind and anathema to the soul.

I've made a topic about video essays a while ago. https://retrogametalk.com/threads/why-are-video-essays-like-this.1089/

And I wholeheartedly agree.

I can respect that wholeheartedly. There are rare occurrences that I want to show my face, but 96% of the time, nah I'm just guy with the controller playing the whole damn show.
