Your views in completionism

I used to want the achievements for every game to "prove" how much I loved a title but as I get older and have less time I realized it doesn't matter.

Games didn't have achievements when I was growing up.

It's enough to finish the story and engage with it for any extra time you may want to.

Persona is a huge time sink, for better or worse.
persona (the first game's) story is insanely long.

My list of games is to damm long that i don't even know if i'll be able to play everything, therefore I'am not a completionist player. But there could be exceptions i guess.

Trophy Hunting is fun at times but sometimes depending on the game it can be a drag. Like the souls games are pretty easy to platinum the only reason why most people don’t is because they can’t handle the games difficulty. But when it comes to games like ninja Gaiden omg there is so much of a grind the difficulty doesn’t even matter anymore ? I have beaten 1,2,3 on their hardest difficulty’s and still refuse to finish the ninja trials for them. The same issue with the Batman games I don’t wanna do the combat training unless I’m just doing it to kill multiple enemies

I only got all achievements for persona 5 but I would never do that again

I grew up without Achievements and when they came out I didnt really understand the appeal. I see a lot of people like them, so much so that Retro Achievements is a whole thing now, and thats cool if you're into them. But I pretty much always ignore them.

It’s kinda like that little bit of serotonin you get from completing it I grew up in the ps3 Xbox 360 and Wii era so as a kid getting achievements always made me excited to keep trying to go for more

I used to ignore that sort of thing too
But the moment those Retroachievement stuff was announced for Dolphin (GameCube and Wii emulator) and the others, I was kind of motivated to test my skills
That's just me though

Don't pretend to collect money for charity and scam your audience for years? Heehee. First time I ever heard about that guy was because of that drama.

As far as the topic at hand goes - if I like a game enough, sure but I definitely draw the line at BS challenges like killing 10k enemies with a crossbow in The Witcher 3. Also, I don't have it in me to ever grind a Disgaea game to 100% completion. I like the series quite a bit but not THAT much.

If achievements are "do this thing that you were going to do anyway, and have to do to progress at all" then I don't care for them, I just get annoyed when they pop up, because it takes me out of the game world for a second. "You reached location X". great.

A good achievement is hard to accomplish and not something that usually happens in a casual playthrough. IMO

Hard as in 'you need to have skill or a good plan'. So something like surviving for 7 days in InfinityMode in Dead Rising.
Not hard as in 'it being super tedious to do', something like Clippy said 'kill 10k enemies with a crossbow'.

So crazy about disgaea I have the game but I never bring myself to continue playing

I hate those achievements to mostly because it’s like bloat you didn’t really do anything to earn it

Are you the type that only considers a game complete when you earn all achievements/trophies/whatchamacallits?

I always felt somewhat offended by this notion - I see as something rather Pavlovian, as if the developers dangle a virtual carrot in front of the player to maintain engagement past what the game could truly provide based on its own merits, on average.

As such, any achievements I do get are just a side effect of organic play, rather than a conscious effort.

So, let's hear it, how does everyone else feel?
A ghost possessed me and I decided to give a longer reply. I feel somewhat bad about my facetiousness so this is my apology.

I’ll word this in a way to help dispel some rumors about 100% completion and help better illustrate the mindset of people like me.

To keep things as transparent as possible, yes, I love doing it. But do I preach it? No. At least I don’t impose it.

I do actually do it as an extension of my playthroughs, and not the defacto. In fact, most of my 100%ed games are replays!

I’ll also give examples of series I dropped 100% for.

My primary 100% franchises are as follows: GTA, Musou, Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter

Status of each:
GTA: I’m close to 100%ing each game. I’ve made tremendous progress.
Musou: I’ve yet a 100% a game but I really want to.
Ratchet & Clank: I’ve already started, made realistic progress. I should keep going.
Jak & Daxter: I almost dropped it.

To sorta navigate my thought process; I find it relaxing. I find it to be an extension of my enjoyment and a new way to play something I’ve played a million times. I also deem it realistic.

I actually never go for a 100% if it can cost me something like 100 hours.

And I have my limits. Because see, even though I’ve 100%ed Jak 1, I dropped jak 2 and 3 because…. The vehicle missions….

I hope some of this satisfies your curiosity. Sorry again for how silly my response was. I was kinda tired.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts to such lengths, and rest assured, you don't need to justify your replies, just say what comes to mind!

Never felt obliged to earn every achievement in a game. I usually 100% games if I really like them, or if I see that it can be done in a short period of time and a game is bearable enough to do it.
as if the developers dangle a virtual carrot in front of the player to maintain engagement
Achievements exist to help you track your progress in the first place, missed achievements might indicate that you've skipped some content, which is useful. I don't know why you consider it a "carrot on a stick", the majority of gamers don't care about earning achievements at all I don't operate statistics here, this is my personal experience drawn form people I spoke to.

What you described is the positive side of the coin, I suppose. If it's true people mostly don't care, I suppose it's all the better. They can be progress markers, true, but a lot of the time they are also meaningless artificial padding, and this is what I refer to with the carrot on a stick allegory.

Specifically, I'm mostly referring to unreasonable ones, those are lazy padding.

I rarely get 100% at all. I don't have time for that and at some point its mostly repetitive tasks that just sour my like for the game and playing the game again on progressively harder difficulties (that most of the times are just artificially harder by increasing enemy damage and life). Exceptions are those games that simply encourage you to explore and find stuff like Hypnospace Outlaw.

I've never been that interested in trophies in video games, I think they distract me from having fun and fully enjoying them. I hope one day that RetroAchievements also adds PAL games to its database so I can unlock some just for fun, but that would end there.

The only games I've platinumed in my life were LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, Resident Evil 7, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Realm Royale for PS4.
Yes... I'm the only one in the world to have platinumed a Battle Royale, xD

Which games would you consider grindy and gimmicky, as examples?
Grindy. Something like Gems of war which has achievement give gold medal to 100 of your cards. It;s very long process because in my nearly 1000 hours I only have around 4-5 of them with gold medals.
As for gimmicky. Something like Phantasy star remaster for PS 2 rest is spoiler but if you played you most likely know what I'm talking about. Or getting all unique characters in Tactics Ogre LuCT.

Nice to see this getting bumped again because I feel I’d like to expand on some stuff I’ve earlier said.

Jak 2 is not hard. Anytime you’re on foot, the game is perfect. Any time you’re on a vehicle, the game is dogshit. Even the hoverboard. Same with Jak 3.
While this may sound harsh, this is ironically my beginning to accepting and hopefully appreciating these games and mechanics even more.

I would love to also add God of War to my list of franchises I love 100%ing. So I’ll hopefully be able to add more like Ape Escape and Sly Cooper.
If it’s not clear already, I love games where you
  1. Have tons of 3D space to run around in
  2. Colorful and interesting characters
  3. Nice and varied gameplay with some mini games and a good feedback loop

Yeah I'm aware of what you mean regarding PS2R. They really went overboard there. I suppose in LUCT's case, you at least can travel as you will between the event threads to save some time.

Beware: There have been no replies in this thread for 90 days.
Keep that in mind when expecting a reply from the people on it,
You can also start a new thread instead. This is just a heads-up, bumping is allowed in this forum.
