Neon genesis evangelion is a classic, it is filled with great characters.
I agree it is a classic, but I don't know if I would recommend it nowadays... I had a friend recently watch it and they could barely get through it because of shinji, and I know it is a common complaint... There is a lot about it that is great, especially for the time it came out, but I can see some thinking the characters suffer from so much time being devoted to shinji and how they interact with him.

To be fair though, it might still hold up for me, I haven't watched it in 15 years lol. It is one of the few anime I have watched multiple times. But I would preface a recommendation of it as it should be watched more for the impact it had on anime culture, than on its own quality: it doesn't stand out as much as it did today, I would think.

i watched like 10 episodes last night, i do agree with shinji making it hard to finish but i hope his character is a bit more interesting and deeper than what i see now

Evangelion is more about the journey.

But yes, they do try to give the character a good ending. Well all of the characters actually.

But yes, most of the anime is about shinji growing a back bone.

Even if people don't like it, there is a lot good about it. I think it is a masterpiece in psychological drama.

Shinji is not a stereotypical hero character.

The first half is a set up for what is revealed later on. tbh Shinji's dad might be more of an interesting character lol.

oh and the movie End of Evangelion is essentially a remake of the last few episodes. or how the director actually intended; basically a lot more money thrown at it.

I rarely watch anime, and when i do i tend to watch longer animes. i want to kinda expand on my anime knowledge, im open with watching anything. so what is your go to rec for a novice anime watcher?

Anime i’ve watched:
Jojo
one piece
berserk
serial experiments lain
dbz
school live
made in abyss
d greyman
yuigoh
Don't start with berserk it didn't finish ,one piece so long (more1000 in fact), Jojo is good in my opinion(what I heard from others) and seriously kaguya Sama love is war is a good one too!

Be ready to be disappointed in that regard >_> Yes the story continues to get interesting, but not a lot of the interest comes from shinji...

Is it though? Again, it has been a LONG time since I watched it, but even in the first episode he "steps up" out of pity for rei, and does so numerous times, even though he doesn't want to. It is a little more complicate than that which I do think kind of works...
Shinji is not a stereotypical hero character.
True, and that can work and in some ways it does in eva, but I think the problem many have is the amount of self pity is undeserved, and it just makes shinji frustrating to watch.

continues
currently 15 episodes in and i gotta say shinji has spaghetti spine

i’ve tried watching love is war, i think i prefer the manga

I always blank on parasyte! I think that is a good overall rec: lots of action, and engaging pace. You need to be ok with violence, but I remember it kept my interest the full way (I'm pretty sure I finished it, but my memory is not great, it might have fallen apart at the end...).
Katanagatari
I love katanagatari, but there is a lot of exposition, if I remember, so it wouldn't be a go to rec for me. Which I think it the reason I took this shot, thinking it pretty funny/ironic and it was only the second episode... But yea, the look is amazing and unique and the story is great.
