It really depends. I'll usually ask what their preferred media genres are and go from there.

I usually recommend Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood. It's genuinely just well-written. It doesn't 'feel' like a typical anime.

oh man, I haven't thought about Full Metal Panic! in a long time.
I watched it in 2008 while living overseas and you just brought up some good memories. Thanks

I honestly have 0 recommendation sure I watch 100s of series but I can´t recommend anything. If your new to anime I would say go to My anime list or similar site and then look at the most popular anime and pick the genre you prefer and pick 2-3 of the time 10 and watch.

In that way you 100% more likely to get something that interests you rather than what interests me.

Lol, recommending Fate/Stay night and Highschool of the dead to someone who has never watched anime is like telling someone who wants to start reading literature to start with Atlus shrugged or Infinite Jest.
People have to be eased into that stuff you madman ::whatashame

Dungeon meshi if you're a fan of fantasy genre with a hint of a dnd feeling ^u^

I don't really care about genre. The quality of an anime is what matters, irrelevant of the genre. Some works are so good they transcend their genre.

There's a maturity to its themes and writing that I think makes it more appealing to people of a certain age group who would view a lot of popular anime as silly and juvenile. It's also veers away from a lot of the weirder aspects of Japanese anime. The familiar fantasy tropes also make it accessible.

Cowboy Bebop

Timeless, effortlessly cool, and an easy recommendation to people who like classic music or classic action movies like John Woo flicks or martial arts movies. It hits on every level, action, style, comedy, poignant moments, etc. It's a masterpiece and it maintains that status with every passing decade.

Psycho-Pass season 1

Psycho-Pass is mature, smart science fiction that draws inspiration from genre classics like Blade Runner and Minority Report

I have three that I consider "must watch":

Slam Dunk: best anime I have ever watched.

Digimon Tamers: surprisingly dark, but very good throughout.

His and Her Circumstances: Probably the best romantic comedy ever animated.

Bonus! Case Closed: just incredible... but still going, so impossible to catch up to.

One anime that I always recomend for people who wants to start watching anime is: Saint Seiya

Underrated as hell (except here in Latin america). The anime adaptation it's very faithful to the manga and adapts it in its entirety. It has filler but it's good and connects very well with the canon material.
My precious!

Well, it certainly depends on the person but in regards to what a person who has never been in contact with Anime could get into I'd recomend drama and not just drama but World Masterpiece Theater Anime.

They have that nostalgic aura to them that is so rare these days, the scenary is quite and beautiful, the pacing is slow and melodramatic and even when you expect a happy ending after such a tedious grind you don't always get it.

I will never forget my first time watching Heidi, or Remi, or Marco, or Perrine, and then I watched A Dog Of Flanders and my heart almost stopped for a momment there.
They truly allow you to appreciate the simple things.

A Dog Of Flanders ending.jpg

Now if I truly had to separate one specific season to watch it would be ''Nobody's Boy Remi'' simply because Nello and Pathrasche's story might be just too damn hard for newcommers.

In the case of Remi not only the story is beautiful and every frame of animation is precious but also the music is deeply introspective and mellow as the title character is a boy who learns to plays the harp via an old cynnical man with a heart of gold who within his personal virtues and misshaps puts his very life, that of his pets and the boy, on the line, in order to complete this task. Tragedies will happen, but I guarantee a happy ending.

That's a Toughie as my tastes tend to stray away from conventional Anime. But i feel i can put a little list ranked from how much Newbie friendly it is.
1.Rozen Maiden

This Show has everything internal drama comedy action and tragedy and can be cute and cozy to and is kind of a pillar being the origin of the Desu meme. And it's short

2.Giant Robo the day the Earth Stood Still
1756427225414.jpeg

This one just has really good presentation and story telling a masterclass drama that leaves you on the edge of your seat with an emotional ending to boot also it's fairly short seizure warning though for the first two eps
3.Azumanga Daiou The Animation
1756427427988.jpeg

Do i really need to explain this one? short sweet cozy funny and cute and important to internet culture

4.Gundam

Watch Gundam Watch Gundam Watch Gundam Watch Gundam
this is my least in good conscience entry here yes it's old but that's why it's a classic a space opera anti war story with drama mystery and tragedy and awesome mech designs and do to the franchises mostly non linear nature you can really start anywhere but most folks will point you to the 80's compilation movies of the original show
