When you get that itch for some good fantasy, be sure to also check out Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit as well as The Twelve Kingdoms. Extremely respectable shows & they set the bar pretty high for the genre.

JoJo
Baccano
Watanabe's stuff (Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, etc.)
Kawajiri's stuff (Ninja Scroll, Cyber City Oedo, etc.)
Vinland Saga

>not a single mention of the original slice of life anime

I'd rec most of the popular ones but here's the ones I always go back to, though you should continue with the manga on most of these.
Berserk
Gintama
Gurren Lagann
Gundam
Frieren
Anohana
One-Punch Man
Tensura
Dororo

Neon genesis evangelion is a classic, it is filled with great characters.
I agree it is a classic, but I don't know if I would recommend it nowadays... I had a friend recently watch it and they could barely get through it because of shinji, and I know it is a common complaint... There is a lot about it that is great, especially for the time it came out, but I can see some thinking the characters suffer from so much time being devoted to shinji and how they interact with him.

To be fair though, it might still hold up for me, I haven't watched it in 15 years lol. It is one of the few anime I have watched multiple times. But I would preface a recommendation of it as it should be watched more for the impact it had on anime culture, than on its own quality: it doesn't stand out as much as it did today, I would think.

i watched like 10 episodes last night, i do agree with shinji making it hard to finish but i hope his character is a bit more interesting and deeper than what i see now

Evangelion is more about the journey.

But yes, they do try to give the character a good ending. Well all of the characters actually.

But yes, most of the anime is about shinji growing a back bone.

Even if people don't like it, there is a lot good about it. I think it is a masterpiece in psychological drama.

Shinji is not a stereotypical hero character.

The first half is a set up for what is revealed later on. tbh Shinji's dad might be more of an interesting character lol.

oh and the movie End of Evangelion is essentially a remake of the last few episodes. or how the director actually intended; basically a lot more money thrown at it.

I rarely watch anime, and when i do i tend to watch longer animes. i want to kinda expand on my anime knowledge, im open with watching anything. so what is your go to rec for a novice anime watcher?

Anime i’ve watched:
Jojo
one piece
berserk
serial experiments lain
dbz
school live
made in abyss
d greyman
yuigoh
Don't start with berserk it didn't finish ,one piece so long (more1000 in fact), Jojo is good in my opinion(what I heard from others) and seriously kaguya Sama love is war is a good one too!

Be ready to be disappointed in that regard >_> Yes the story continues to get interesting, but not a lot of the interest comes from shinji...
But yes, most of the anime is about shinji growing a back bone.
Is it though? Again, it has been a LONG time since I watched it, but even in the first episode he "steps up" out of pity for rei, and does so numerous times, even though he doesn't want to. It is a little more complicate than that which I do think kind of works...
Shinji is not a stereotypical hero character.
True, and that can work and in some ways it does in eva, but I think the problem many have is the amount of self pity is undeserved, and it just makes shinji frustrating to watch.

continues
currently 15 episodes in and i gotta say shinji has spaghetti spine

Manga can be read so faster and in fact I lately more read manga than watch anime.

Initial D, Hellsing Ultimate, Parasyte, Hunter x Hunter, Trigun, Yu Yu Hakusho.

I always blank on parasyte! I think that is a good overall rec: lots of action, and engaging pace. You need to be ok with violence, but I remember it kept my interest the full way (I'm pretty sure I finished it, but my memory is not great, it might have fallen apart at the end...).
Katanagatari
I love katanagatari, but there is a lot of exposition, if I remember, so it wouldn't be a go to rec for me. Which I think it the reason I took this shot, thinking it pretty funny/ironic and it was only the second episode... But yea, the look is amazing and unique and the story is great.

It depends on the time I have at my disposal. I usually grativate towards classic anime from before the 1990s which tend to be longer. IE I never miss an oportunity to rewatch SDF Macross (1982) whenever its on TV. Besides the whole variable fighter mechas thing, I just love the couple's drama aspect of it, and the overal design and aesthetic of the series its very pleasing on the eyes.
Do You Remember Love?
SDF Macross 1.jpg

But one of the newer ones I find myself rewatching every now and then its a short 13 episode self contained little series called Geneshaft (2001). Its a series about a space station crew in a what if we could prevent the apocalypse type of scenario but again the dynamic and personal interactions between the characters its a very interesting and though provoking aspect of it.
Geneshaft Opening
Genshaft.jpg

Mushoku Tensei, Monogatari series, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (haven't watched Index anime)

I always recommend anyone, regardless of experience, Golden Kamuy and The Rose of Versailles

If someone barely watches anime I'd recommend:
Death Note
Psycho Pass
Perfect Blue(Anything that Satoshi Kon has worked on)
Akira
Cowboy Bebop
Mob Psycho 100
Hunter x Hunter
Parasyte

Shamelessly necro-ing to post my weeaboo gateway iceberg edit.
Pretty much every male zoomer I know (including myself) started anime with Dragonball Z, Berserk or Cowboy Bebop since every man has at some point dreamed about being a mountain of muscles able to beat the hell out of everyone, which all those coincidentally have.
It's a very slippery slope however.
One day you're watching cowboy bebop, next your changing your IP address to access doujin hentia games from a backend Russian forum hosted in a shed somewhere.
I'm hesitant to recc anime to anyone since its very divisive, you're either 100% full weeb or a guy who lifts weights and like's DBZ and nothing else.

Seeing that iceberg chart makes me feel personally attacked....considering i have in fact read hunting in another world with my elf wife and did learn hiragana and katagana but not kanji as well as each tier applying to me. >.>

there are only two certainties in this world and one of them is that a weeaboo will at some point attempt to learn kanji :loldog
