Your Favorite SHMUPs!

I also want to say in this triple post that Star Fox 64 is so good. I think the magic that makes it something so special is all the chatter and lines from characters. The game itself is stellar, but oh my god all the dialogue pushes it into legendary status that I think every other Star Fox game and game trying to be like it is sorely missing.

I have a number of shmups which I really enjoy, like R-Type Leo, Hyper Duel, Macross 2...

But I have super soft spots for Triggerheart Exelica and DeathSmiles.

I don't know, man.. there's too many to add.
but i'm going to try add as few as possible below

-all Psikyo games that have anime art in it (i love most psikyo games outside SHMUPs too, though it's embarassing to say), two of the example is Sengoku Ace and Sengoku Blade.
-Castle shikigami series
-Shikhondo(食魂徒) - Soul Eater & Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage

Have you heard or play any of this game?
i think you guys do, but if you haven't, especially shikhondo series i recommend to try it or at least have a look, it's a horror SHMUPs with a disturbing(elegantly disturbing) art..
Psikyo games kick my ass but damn can they do bosses. Every shmup dev dreams of the day they can do bossing like Psikyo does.

I firmly believe it's one of Cave's best.

I like the bug theme (it was apparently meant to be a Nausicaa video game) and the easier access for newcomers.
This and Dodonpachi are my favorites from Cave. I had a chance to play both on a cab when I visited a friend in Virginia.

It's still a shame most aren't available on PC. Even the sequel to Mushi is still on the X360.

I'm still eagerly waiting for Ketsui Deathtiny to get a PC/Switch port.

Yeah I thankfully have most of the games on Ps3 (modded), kinda want them to rerelease the CAVE shooting collection. They probably won't, but a man could dream

Two years ago I've done every Cave shmups via emulation or MAME.

I think that it's a shame they've delisted many on the eshop.

They could run easily on modern hardware and PCs.

Yeah, I had hope a couple years ago when they ported mushi, donpachi, and deathsmiles but then they stopped at those three pretty much. There isn't much going on at the company, the latest thing I've seen was some Touhou game.

oh hey I didn't see this thread get posted. more shmup fans and shmup talk is always welcome! I have a thread on this too but it's somewhere else. Anyway, favorite shmups... it's hard to pick. And even if I DO pick, I feel like I have to split between classics and modern shmups. I'm gonna pick a few of each.

For the classics, (some of) my favorites are
-Batsugun (as my avatar indicates)
-Mushihimesama
-Giga Wing
-Rayforce
-Soldier Blade
-Touhou 8

And for modern shmups, I must mention a few more:
-Crimzon Clover World EXplosion
-Blue Revolver double action
-GunVein
-Danmaku Unlimited 2 & 3
-Graze Counter GM
-ZeroRanger

and lastly, fine I can't go by without mentioning Ikaruga. Everybody loves that game.

I'm going with Gradius 2, Super Aleste, Silpheed, and Devil Engine.as top faves.

I think Psikyo's are my favourite SHMUPs.
But then Sexy Parodious...

I know this one is kind of bad, but I find it super endearing:

GOD PANIC! PCEngine-CD

LOL it is so bad, I love it.

one's with auto-spawn when you die. even when you contuine.

Not that much of a SHMUP guy but one of my more recent lesser known game discoveries was Einhander for the PS1 and man that game was fun from what I have played.
i really wanted to like the game but the 50 minutes run time puts me off. i remember fighting the T-rex looking boss and when i lost i thought "oh i must've been near the end that run took me 20 minutes" and no i wasnt even halfway there.

Twinkle Tale for the Sega Genesis. This game is hands down my all-time favorite in the shoot 'em up category for the system. It’s an overhead adventure shoot-'em-up that somehow makes you feel like you’re on a whimsical quest through a fantasy universe. The pixel art is absolutely great, with the character and enemy's bursting with vibrant colors that practically leap off the screen. It’s like a kid took a box of crayons and went a little crazy in the best way possible. The gameplay strikes a nice balance challenging enough to keep you on your toes but not so frustrating that you want to throw your controller across the room. Honestly, whenever I think of Sega SHUMP, Twinkle Tale is the game that always comes to mind. It’s just a fun, spirited adventure that I keep coming back, whether for a quick gaming session or just to enjoy some classic pixel magic.

CAVE are absolute top games to me.
But they are so hard to find and make them work on MAME, all the newer ones I can never make work.
Which ones are you having trouble with? Akai Katana and Dodonpachi SDOJ? Cause those were removed from the MAME list after Exa-Arcadia (spits) sent them a C&D for making a new version of these games. Screw those guys.

Anyway, there are ways of playing those just fine, the emulator CAN still run them fine, you just need a custom build for them to work. I literally updated my emulators earlier today and had to find that, try this one from the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/mame0276-sh34
unpack the .exe into the folder of regular MAME and then you can play those games. You can also find the ROMs in the Archive if you look hard enough, I'm just not gonna link them here cause rules.

I got to suggest Twinkle Tale to Sayo back when they were still doing those Game of the Week/Month threads last year, and I played through and fell in love with it. It definitely feels more "fair" than a lot of games in the genre, my only real complaint is that the one stage with an actual flying/shmup section is a bit less interesting than the rest of the game.

I just want to give a shout out to Gun-Nac on the NES and Space Megaforce on the SNES

Two kind of obscure??? gems (though how obscure can they be when we got some CAVE fans in here) that are more on the casual side of things, but there's something wrong with a little breezy game every now and then

Gun.smoke
Galaga
Gradius
(I like the letter G, sue me)

R-Type (finally)

And lastly, interestingly, some lost media now, sadly:

Pirate's Revenge, a unique rail shooter/shmup developed by a taiwanese development team IGS.
You'd be lucky to see either this or another pirate related shmup Deadstorm Pirates. This one however was different. Imagine pirate fantasy but mixed with some cyberpunk and steampunk elements as well. You piloted your own ship of 3 different characters, I specifically remember a pretty standard pirate with a cybernetic arm and Leif Erickson of all people (Heenga-theenga-thurgen!) all piloting their own pirate ships with rocket boosters and sails, firing missiles, cannons, magic wolve ghosts (no i'm not joking I remember the robo arm pirate guy having that kind of an attack as an Ultimate/Screen Clear attack).

Sadly no roms for MAME were found and really the only good photo online of the cabinet I can find is this:

Anyone else remember playing this too? I remember playing this at a local Chuck E Cheese's.
