Why did the game boy series of consoles have so many peripherals?

And extremely odd ones at that?

It's like the sat nav for the sega staurn for use in a Japanese car, all I think is why?

Well, GB was the most popular form of playing on the go, so was a go-go for Nintendo & third party companies

The game gear draining six AA batteries back when batteries weren't the cheapest may have had something to do with that since the old Gameboy could run a long time on batteries

I prefer the pocket though over the OG design.

SEGA sold rechargeable batteries for the Game Gear and i think that a plug adapter was sold back on the day too

The plug was a lifesaver, that and the TV adapter were quite handy in the 90's, though I didn't play one till the mid 2000's and at that stage Sonic advance 1 existed on the GBA, so how amazing the game gear really was went over my head.

It's the neo geo pocket that really blew me away out of all the older handhelds as in I was not quite expecting the Analog nub to be so sorta awesome.
