The Xbox next-generation system could cost significantly more than the PlayStation 6 due to the Magnus APU and the potential support of third-party stores that would deprive Microsoft of the 30% cut on every game sold on the system.

"Xbox Next May Cost Twice as Much as PlayStation 6" That's actually crazy...

I seriously wonder how there's people that are still loyal to this soulless Shitcrosoft shadow of a then good brand that doesn't get supported in a genuine way anymore, it should go full steam (kek) into the Sega route.

Console prices no longer seem to be linked to the hardware specifications. Why should I pay a premium for a walled-garden gaming experience that has no advantage compared to PC gaming? PC components typically become cheaper the older they get, and the further they drift from the cutting edge competition (up until they hit that rare obsolete part niche). Consoles paradoxically raise in price because they believe the uninformed consumer is prepared to pay the asking price. I'm specifically looking at you PS5 Pro, overpriced at launch and already obsolete 2 years later.

Console gaming used to be built on a promise of a simpler, more consistent gaming experience where you didn't have to fiddle with hardware configurations and hope that the software supported your particular standard. Just plug and play. Now there's no garuntee that the console game you bought will have decent performance, or that it won't be a buggy, crashing mess and on top of that you're expected to pay an extra fee to use your own internet for multiplayer. These videogame companies have lost the thread.

Does anyone even think the PS5 is dated at this point? Despite being a half decade old it still feels like the console gen just started and the PS4 is still relevant.

Why is anyone even talking about the pricing of the gen after this one?
It's not a matter of the PS5 being dated, it's a thing of how long it's been since release. I have to imagine that if a company launches a console, it isn't too long after that before work starts being done on shaping what the next console will be. At some point, that involves locking down what the hardware will be, so development of games can start.

Five years into the life of the PS5, I'd be shocked if they weren't already pretty deep into planning for the PS6. Same for Xbox. There's no hard and fast rule of how long it'll be between generations, but it's coming up. Even if you said "not until 2028," that will be here before you know it. Dated or not by then, the companies want a shiny new set of keys to jingle at consumers.

But on the flipside if consumers aren't ready for it the thing will flop, hard. That's what happened with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. People act like Blu-Ray won, but in reality they both lost to DVD for a decade. Blu-Ray eventually took over in sales once people were ready, but by that point we were only a couple years away from streaming taking its place.

Whether or not the console makers are ready or have it designed is, frankly, more irrelevant than I'm sure they'd like to believe. They need to time it right or it won't matter.

bluray is good for anime, but that's about it.

This is my thought too. Despite the PS5's age, it feels like it's only barely gotten off the ground at this point. Is anyone really clamoring for a PS6 at this point in time?

The thing is $ony tend to release a console when their previous console just getting started. Due to the way console generation "time freeze" video game industry, naturally they had to wait until the current generation became common as much as they can + people leaving previous gen for good before actual current gen console games are released so video game industry can continue. We literally still playing games belong to 2015, PC Master Race is master at running expensive AF hardware shit to run overly clown makeup graphics just to run it ok for unnecessary show off of 4K 144 FPS. They dilly-dally until the current gen can start for real with remake spam BS. Now PS4 is being abandoned by the industry faster than ever was which made people kinda finally realize how ancient shit PS4 is anymore. People started to realize the year is not 2015, it's fucking 2025 wake up yo lol. Now AAA companies will focus on only releasing games for current gen by wanna avoid Switch 2 too because that rubbish is barely better than previous gen consoles but Nintendo pays money to put your game on that rubbish so all is good by just streaming the game or releasing insane downgrade versions that make the game looks like 3D GBA game lol. It's just it doesn't make sense to bother with developing for PS4 too anymore. In current technical standards its too weak. It kinda seem like you wanna release Resident Evil 9 on PS5 gen but people cry for their PS4 as if they want Resident Evil 4 on PS1 lol. They just gotta let the PS4 die so we can start to actually experience current gen for real yo. Do you know why sunset is beautiful? Because it sets ayy lmao.

You're discounting marketing and people caving to fomo. When the PS5 hit, it was a pandemic, it was hard to find, and people weren't done with their PS4 yet. Also add to that (at least in the US) big chains didn't even stock them in-store on the shelf, so you couldn't just walk in and buy one for a good while there, you had to arrange it with an online order and pick it up or something. They made it kind of hard to buy a PS5, and it has no games or whatever, right? PS5 is at 80 million lifetime sales. Once they were out there, people started seeing them in posts online where people found them, and then it just went, whether people were ready or not. Fwiw: PS4 is at 117 million, but it also has six years more on the market than PS5.

This isn't Sega stealth-launching the Saturn to beat Sony to market. There will be research and focus testing to bear out whether the time is right. Whether you agree with it is up to you, but they've been pretty successful so far. Microsoft, less so. So for MS to make an even more expensive thing, idk. They've lost the hearts and minds where Sony's people are repeat business.

I maintain that Sony intentionally set the launch price of the PS5, lower than its market value. I just don't envision any way the first few months could've turned out like that, if they didn't for some heck-forsaken reason want it to.

Maybe the PS6 is going to be really inexpensive, we don't know

Thing is... console market value is largely speculative. The PS3 was famously overtuned and sold at a loss even for the original asking price of +599, likely due to the added cost of licensing the Blu-ray player and the redundant PS2 components. Its also hard to price the PS5 components in a way that reflects its actual worth since at the time there was a chip shortage, and before that most of the manufacturers were focusing on feeding the ravenous demand of cryptofarms, and also that since then there's been a flood of decently specced prebuilt gaming devices pushing down the perceived cost of components. If you want to see something that suggests the PS5/PS5 Pro's actual market value then you don't have to look much farther than the second-hand market as in Ebay.
Additionally, we have to face the fact that hardware between generations has been improving less and less, and this reflects an overall slowdown in how much the technology we currently have can be iterated on.

At the end of the day, the pricing of the consoles depend on what the manufacturers think they can get away with selling it for. I think its a fair prediciton to think that the next xbox will cost more because it will be marketed as a dedicated gaming platform for a company who is currently pushing their service to as many devices as they can. In other words, microsoft understands that with the direction the market is heading in, only the most dedicated and hardcore fans will buy their console because this crowd will pay almost any asking price. Who is to say whether their strategy will pan out... exploiting the fans seems to be working for Nintendo so far.
