WWA - Waffles Wants Answers

First time hearing about power-bombing, I kind of get it because I used to report random people that pissed me off back when I played LOL, but since the report system worked awful no one ever got banned. I think it would be funny if it was like a "fake" ban (maybe just a timeout or a flag on the profile that says they're banned, I think that would be funnier)

About the advise sites, I never went on them or anything, generally seems like a bad idea to me, teens should be asking people they actually know about stuff.
banned macaroni and cheese just isn't that good.jpg

They don't have the maturity to answer questions any more than people have the maturity to have an intelligent discussion on the internet when their opinion differs.
Couldn't agree more.

In fact, the thing that prompted me to ask this was remembering the time a tween girl came on the site and asked advise on how to be with an older teen she really liked... And people were actually helping her! It took until a mod started deleting the answers and banning the girl before people understood that that was a problem.

Sucks they had to ban her for asking life advice.

It sucks that kiddos have to be snubbed like that but it's the only way to avoid attracting people of, shall we say, certain persuasions and preferences.

Yeah, agreed.

Definitely not mature enough to use the site, either.

Congratulations on the nicest way of putting that, that I've ever heard. You deserve an award. ?

Now just remember not to switch the letters around.. There ya go.

To be fair, it is more for retro games, a demographic only popular with people closer to our ages in our 30s-40s than with youngsters.

Not to  not be inclusive, but they really don't have much of a place here.
Hate to say it like that, but not a lot of kids in their teens and 20s that share the same nostalgia for the classics.

I meant on the advise site I mentioned earlier... she wasn't even a teen at the time, so she absolutely had no business posting there, at least for one more year.

Oh. ?
Sorry, a little hard for me to contextualize ever since I broke my brain.

What do you guys think about early advise sites for teens?

I was a member of a couple growing up, and I used to think they were pretty great... But WebArchive has certainly shown me another reality entirely. I'm almost shocked to see that the questions weren't moderated at all and that 12-years-olds could come in and ask things that would make me ground them forever if I was their patent.
I think part of using the site would be because they don’t feel comfortable asking their parents, or other adults in their life. The premise sounds nice, but it’s clear how something like that can go to shit quick

1) Kids are jerks, but not only that some adults love bullying kids when protected by a screen. I can imagine how things would get toxic quick

2) Big part of why I think it wouldn’t work, predators, sounds like a site like that would give them a buffet of insecure children to pick from.

3) Things getting twisted, kids pressuring each other into doing bad things. I’ve heard/seen of sites where mainly teens have their suicidal tendencies encouraged leading to them going through with it.

I can see where kids using the site are coming from, the fear of asking things then getting ridiculed for it. Open message boards just aren’t the place for that.

You are a 10000% right, man. Can't argue a single comma in there.

But to be fair, a lot of the questions asked there WERE in line with what the site was about ("can't tell if my friend likes, likes me", "I just drank from the first time and I'm freaking out my parents are gonna find out"; "I'm a nobody"...). Problem was that WebArchive (and my own experience) seem to strengthen every single one of your points by sheer volume. Kids absolutely WERE jerks, and bad advice galore. Some was downright dangerous, too, if not illegal.

One thing that's amusing is that the comma was the public enemy number one there. It makes reading anything into a chore, and it's kinda charming as a result.

Now I want answers.
Site go down for anyone else just now?

Alright! This is surprisingly fun! Third one: what do y'all think of the old "Rate-A-Member" feature?

I'm not talking about rating members for their contributions, but for their looks.

I guess it was just a sign of the times, because I only knew of three sites that had this even back then, all aimed at teenagers (and one of them was even sensible enough to let you request being out of it).

I don't think it'd even be allowed these days, but I find it very interesting nonetheless... It's was genuinely a big thing back when people didn't fully grasp the implications of holding young, impressionable members to those "standards", and on huge sites that didn't even need an account to use.

I didn't know this was a thing haha.

From the perspective of someone who's been on the Internet for a while now I can tell you that posting pictures of yourself is begging for swift and harsh judgement. People hiding behind their keyboards and avatars will relentlessly put you down.

Unless you look like a supermodel in which case they will tell you you stole those pictures.

Given how everyone's mental fortitude has sharply declined since the advent of social media bringing a feature like this back will only lead to suffering. What I'm saying here is that Reddit needs to implement it ASAP.

I'm gonna say this VERY seriously: reading your takes as a fellow "veteran" has been my favorite thing about starting this topic, dude.

I remember how much drama it caused during the Fotolog days, too... and you couldn't even rate people there, just judge them.

I'm glad I'm self-aware enough to acknowledge how I ugly I am, I never appeared on camera, I'm quite infamous since middle school because I'm the only guy with no picture in the yearbook.

Awful idea, people on the internet are mean as hell, specially teenagers

Sometimes I feel like asking random questions that pop into my head, but that aren't really that big of a deal and/or worth starting whole threads over... and, so, I'm making one huge thread instead of a dozen small ones. It's still a bunch of junk, but self-contained junk XD

First question I'm gonna ask is: what do you guys think of "Power-Bombing"?

For those who don't know, "Power-Bombing" was a feature on a couple of mid-aughts sites that allowed premium members to attack regular members by "bombing" their profiles, dealing enough damage to get them suspended and/or banned. There was a caveat, however: a single member couldn't deal enough damage on their own to trigger a suspension, so the targeted victim had to either be strongly disliked or just the result of others teaming up to get rid of them.

The thing about PB is that damage dealt reseted after each month and did not roll over in any way, shape or form... but I still think that it is a terrible idea and I'm honestly surprised that it didn't kill the few sites that adopted it on its own.

What do you think, though? Would you stay a member of a site that allowed such a thing? Do you think it's a neat addition? Or maybe you are completely neutral to it? Tell us!
Hey best buddy. Sorry to bother you. I know this is a really silly request but is it ok to edit the question into the title to notify people when a new question? That would be really helpful, if you’re ok with it of course!

Not a bad idea, actually.

I will see what I can do.

Next one!

Did anyone here ever get to play with this controller?

It's amazing how many games hated it and flat out refused to start with it connected. I only ever owned one, and it came as a "throw-in" with my console.
