I did not understand the full nuance of Xenoblade 2's combat system until I got stuck on a boss and looked up tips that led to me actually learning what was going on with the orb system and how to manipulate it. Coming to understand it was a great moment, but that was in spite of the tutorials.
Fighting game tutorials are pretty horrific across the board. Shout out to Tekken 7 with the devs claiming story mode is the tutorial, Tekken 7's story mode actively misleads you on how the game plays since it changes how rage works and trains you on how to counter moves that don't fucking exist outside of story mode. Oh boy I'm so excited to play Claudio and Alisa in VS mode to use their cool projectiles.
The standard FG tutorial method of giving you distinct lessons all divided by loading screen is pretty terrible too. You go from a lengthy explanation of mechanics so simple not even the likes of Mario and Kirby feel the need to explain them to summing up complicated mechanics in a few sentences with no practical applications given.
Knockout City had a great tutorial because it gave you the space to freely walk around the maps and practice the mechanics at your own pace, so you could just have fun playing around with how movement works.
