Worst Fandoms for a game?

In my experience every fandom in existence is a toxic swamp, with people so obsessed with their opinions that they forgot what made them like the games in the first place. I used to follow some survival horror fandoms a bit here and there, but very quickly realized that people just do the same thing over and over again. I get it, its social media in a nutshell, but I'm so tired of seeing how hateful and defensive some fans are.

And reading all the messages above I want to add the Silent Hill fandom to the pile. I'm still convinced that 90% of SH "fans" never played a single SH game and based their opinions on video essays. So god forbid if you happen to like later non Team Silent SH games or do not agree with some random theory made completely out of someone's headcannon. I think its just human psychology, we tend to defend things we love but sometimes get carried away. And social medias with their tribalism amplify this to the extreme. So yeah, I do not engage and stay away from any fandom these days, which is not that easy to do when you see all the delusional takes online.

Also I think RE6 is an okay game. Its a bloated mess, but trying it after playing other RE titles for all my life, I thought it would be much worse. I think its always about the absolute extremes. People who hate the game can't accept that someone likes it and vice versa. That is how every online argument works, nothing inbetween and no nuance. Damn, I'm rambling again, time to wrap it up ::sailor-embarrassed

The more popular the game = The worse the fandom

any small indie dev whose game got popular in the last 5 yrs, those fandoms might be cancer

Sonic 06 (they act like the game was never bad)
Shadow 05 (similar reasons to above)
Sonic Black Knight (they think this piece of shit was a masterpiece)
Sonic Forces
Sonic CD
Sonic Unleashed
Smash Brawl (people state this game was “better than Melee and Ultimate”)
Fortnite
FNAF
PUBG
Sonic Racing Crossworlds (so many glazers and they kept spamming that annoying RV image on Twitter)
Overwatch

-Most popular Nintendo games.
-Hoyoverse in general.
-Trails.
-Toby Fox games.
-Online games.
-Sonic (06 especially).
-Type Moon.
-Persona.
I suppose the lesson in all of this is to avoid Twitter!

I think fandoms are stupid. Most of them spend more time online than actually playing the game. I would play my favorite games alone I dont care. They make good games look bad.

Eh. I loved TLoU 2 on release and I still love it now, miserable descent into emotional cruelty and fantastic action game that it is.
Go on handwaving away people that do or don't enjoy things in ways you disagree with as arrogant or pretentious or sheepish or plain dumb or whatever though. People online gonna be people online.
Then why do Last of Us 2 fans usually act so pompous, hateful, and smug?
EDIT: I know there are exceptions to this rule. In fact, when I saw a video from comedian Ryan Beard calling out known alt-right Youtuber Synthetic Man for his misogynistic take on The Last of Us, namely both the Part II game and overall TV series, he opened up by explaining why he loved The Last of Us Part II, and I was actually okay with it has his reasoning was on point and done in a satisfactory way. Unfortunately, most Last of Us 2 fans are... For lack of a better word, delusional. Indeed, there's a difference between loving Part II and being a Stan for Part II.

Oh, yeah. Video Essayists and the rise of Silent Hill Elitists have got to be the worst thing that happened to the Silent Hill franchise, even worse than Revelation. Like RE6 and The Last of Us Part II, I genuinely don't think they've played any of the games after the Team Silent era or even the Team Silent era itself.

And speaking of people who haven't played past entries radicalised by Video Essayists, Max Payne 3. Look, unlike RE6, I actually quite like Max Payne 3 for being a solid companion piece to Remedy's saga that suffers from the worst story and writing of the lot. Unfortunately, in the 2020s, thanks to the rise of video essayists, the game had become one of the most popular targets for smug know-it-alls due to it being overreliant on mean-spirited shock and misery porn as part of the script's botched attempts to pay tribute to Man on Fire. The end result? A buttload of flame wars between Remedy elitists and these radicalised Rockstar loyalists, with casual fans of Max Payne, both the original saga and 3, caught in the middle.

The Sonic fandom is overhated just bc of Chris chan, rule 34, and several bizarre fanfics

I think it's more how they act online than anything you mentioned lol (Chris Chan is barely associated with Sonic fans and R34 and fanfics are just an accepted inevitable part of fandoms in general). Sonic fans are some of the worst when it comes to "toxic-positivity" i.e. you can't criticize anything, or have better expectations of anything that comes from Sonic Team or you're an entitled hater who just needs to be happy with what you've been given.

I believe fandoms become unbearable whenever you're forced to interact with them in order to play the game and valorant is a good example of that, I used to play that game for years since the day it came out but at some point last year I just had enough and stopped playing, the community is just SUPER toxic, if you play poorly they get mad, if you play well they get mad, if they're the ones playing poorly they'll blame YOU for their terrible performance, after 4 years of playing I've seem them all. I made it to platinum 3 at some point but then the season changed, I got slapped back to silver, and after a couple of terrible games and getting constantly insulted by my group, something clicked on me and stopped playing right there and then, I erased my riot account forever, one of the best decisions of my entire life.

True. It’s a game I had fun with but not one that makes it worth dedicating your life to.

Yup. I feel I had fun with it in my two playthroughs.

Toby always said undertale is a mish mash of stuff he likes, he's very open about it

I like it but I got a bunch of gripes with it, like how easy it is despite what people say; and how its almost more of a visual novel than an rpg with how little strategy there is to everything

Yeah you dont have to kill anyone, but the gameplay's pretty shallow and the pacing is slow; which makes replaying it over and over to see every hidden thing kinda tedious.
If you're really attached to the characters, genocide leaves a big impact. But if you're not, aside from a couple cool deaths, its soooo sloooow

i would say nintendo but i never had any nintendo console other than the gameboys

ff14 holds a special seat for me, maybe just cos it's exactly the obtuse fanbase full of gaylords everywhere being absolute jellyfish: toxic af, and so easily breakable 😂
christ, it's a wonder how people like them even stay alive on the internet, cos back in my day
yelling-cloud-1083436231.gif

things nowadays have just been totally pussified, that one video on youtube knew exactly what's going on
everyone's got each other at cutthroat (quite literally) distance cos everyone's so scared of saying anything nowadays 🤷‍♂️ quite sick of it honestly BUT what can we do
live in memories i guess

I'm genuinely scared of Sonic fans, because there is no way a sane person would base their whole personality and life on an edgy blue hedgehog.

All of them are pretty bad and the bigger they are the worse they become.

Think about it this way: Even RGT has bouts of drama from time to time and we're just a couple hundred peeps with fairly diverse tastes in gaming. Now imagine a place that has a 1000 times more people who are laser-focused on a franchise. Toxic radiation is bound to break any Geiger counter.

Yeah, Eric all on his own has toxicity worth of a 100,000 men.

DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON MODERN SH FANS

I swear on all thar is holy, the majoriry just know it from pretentious video essays about 2. Hell, blooper even Hired a video essayist for the shitty remake of 2

IF modern fans played the games, they only played 2. Or they played it first and then the others

It might as well be the only game in the series, 3 gets Some love but no one gives a fuck about 1 and 4

I contemplated making a thread about Silent Hill misconsceptions because of how wifespread they are (like the nurses in the second game meaning repressed sexuality, when thats actually the mannequinn). So many people take some dude's personal interpretation as fact when the series Has a Lorebook, its been available online for free and it explains everything

While the series uses symbolism and a lot of surreal stuff, the actually story and the world is not abstract or up to interpretation at all. Theres only Some stuff thats left to your imagination

I have a bone to pick with yt essayists in general:; they're all just a bunch of midwits, who think playing a lot of videogames and going to film school makes you smarter than the dumb commoners

And a lot of time their opinion can be summed up as "This thing is good and correct, because it agrees with Me"

Nintendo stans

I also just generally hate gamers who always choose the side of corporations over consumers. It's surprising how many people are like that.

I generally find retro gamers to be a lot cooler than modern gamers. Of course there are exceptions like many of the fine people here.

I also get irritated by hardcore types who are like "why aren't all games brutally difficult and soul crushing! I hate fun!"

To a type of people, the fun is in the difficulty; learning the game and getting good at it

You can say that about any game. I'm talking about gamers who love when games are unfair and rigged against the player. Games that are intentionally designed to cause stress.

I didn't know getting over it had a fandom

Genshin Impact nuclear plants are less toxic than this fandom
Naruto ( I guess mostly because of some shippers)
My Hero Academia (Some wild shit happening there)
The Entire Muh Childhood Memory and let my billion dollar company alone Nintendo Fandom
I don't know anymore that are considered toxic as I normally stay away from fandoms like a politicians stays away from keeping promises.
