Worst Fan Translations

  • The spanish fan translations for BoF 1 and 2, they have both the issues of the official english translations and they add more issues
  • The official FFVII spanish translation although theres luckily a patch that fixes it

From the top of my head, Yu-Gi-Oh ARC V Tag Force SPECIAL

like I get it dude you like Abridged, could you take this seriously

Also Saikyo Card Battle on 3DS
This is maybe the worst fate for any anime game: having the abridged dub take precedent.

A spanish translation of Megaman Zero, I don´t remember who made it

The Dragon Quest 1+2 english patch really irked me because of a glitch in DQ2 that completely broke my save file. There's a patch that fixes the bug but it only applies to the version that uses the Japanese names, and I honestly prefer the western names.

I'm also not a big fan of the Tales of Phantasia SNES translation.

I'm currently playing the English patch of EX Troopers and it's, well, not good. It's total nonsense most of the time lol. But I'm thankful to the translators because they let me play this fantastic game. And the story's not important. It's so basic that you can understand it if you've read a shounen manga before.

Rockman & Forte English patch.

The spanish final fantasy adventure translation by the group called paladin knights reads like it was made by a monkey

Necro-posting for prosperity now that AI translated hacks are a thing now.
I do understand that usage, but they took a lot script liberties and just added things that don't belong in general, the profanity isn't the only point. I'll see if I can source a side by side to better illustrate what I mean.

Not trying to diss on J2E here, they were important at breaking new ground, but it doesn't mean things aren't inaccurate, awkward or just plain stupid in places, much like Working Designs' stuff on the professional translation arena.
Makes you wonder: Had Tomato not bring up J2E's work compared to several official localizations of Final Fantasy IV, let alone write an article about it, would J2E's translation of FF4 still be more revered than now and other translation efforts like Project Namingway wouldn't have existed?

Oh man don't get me started, i tried the tengai makyou 4 "machine translated" translation and i couldn't understand any of it.

I really hope these AI translations don't stand in the way of getting human translations of games.

Like I can understand something like Dragon Quest X using AI translation due to the nature of it being an MMO and a majority of the text is stored server side and has to be translated in real-time so a AI translation injection tool makes sense there, not to mention most of the info stored client side is fully translated by humans.

But something like the recent Votoms and Evangelion translations being done with AI is just kind of lame. Like I think it works as a good jumping off point to build off to show they've managed to fully replace all the text in the game and recruit actual translators, but just putting them out in that state and seeing them get uploaded to the repo just kind of sucks.

I've seen a number of fan projects, mods and translations get cancelled due to someone else beating them to the punch whether that be something official getting announced or another project releasing before them. I just hope someone doesn't see that a project they were working on got an AI translation out before then then lose interest in completing the project.

idk if it's the worst translation but I remember playing smt ps1 and seeing preta be named hungry ghost or something like that. Anyways, I went back to playing snes smt with ps1 soundtrack via msu1 hack.

Was it before the proper translation got released?

I don't remember beyond first seeing the english translation of the ps1 version appear on cdromance and I wanna try it out straight straight away. However, I found out that translation was a bit too direct for me, so I went back to snes version instead and later on, I just patched the snes rom with ps1 ost with msu1.

Just an fyi, "hungry ghost" is the english translation of the word preta, so both translations were accurate, though it would throw off SMT fans who are used to the original name.
