PC Wizardry Super Thread

At least the 8th game lets you play as a buff dragon valkyrie.
I may be being too critical; perhaps I'll give the other games in the series a chance.

It'll be hard to bust down my OCD enough to skip the first game, though 😅

I haven't gotten into this series yet... but seems to be quite popular!
Which game is the recommended entry?
I'm mostly interested in the story than gameplay!

All I really know about the series is that it is canon that the in-universe creator of Sword Art Online took inspiration from these games to make his own.

Wizardry has a body count XD

I have also not got around to Wizardry but it is indeed on the list. If a game got a PC Engine port there's a good chance I plan on playing it. ::flexing

I have that remake of part 1 that came out a year or two ago, but I've only poked at it briefly. Always kind of quietly respect the old titles but have stayed away because early RPGs are so mean.

I'll always love this series, but will also be the first to admit that it's not for everyone 😅

Growing up in the 80s, we didn't have a home computer, so I missed out on the earliest versions. But I did rent the NES port a few times, and absolutely adored it! Didn't get very far, but thankfully, the rental store included the [hefty] instruction manual, so I had a good idea of how to build a party, what to do regarding skills and alignments, etc.

Definitely a game that requires a guide or the original manual, but if you're willing to do some reading before you begin - and map out the dungeon as you go - you're in for a nice time. A nice, mercilessly-difficult time 😉

My favorite part of any RPG has always been character creation and party customization. I absolutely hate being forced to play with a pre-named protagonist and their friends, following their story and wrapping up their loose ends. Some games handle this better than others, but for the most part, a game that lets me customize my party from the outset and play the game my own way is all I'm really looking for in any RPG. And Wizardry - along with the original Final Fantasy - was one of the first games I played that allowed me to do just that 🥳

I've wanted to start this series from the beginning for a while, it being one of the key influences on the early RPGs and all. It seems like the epitome of dungeon crawling with the party management and having to map out the dungeon yourself.

Don't really know what version of the first trilogy I want to play though. The recent remake of the first game would be the obvious choice, except I'd like to transfer my characters to the second game. The MS-DOS version would be perfect if it weren't for the level bug, the NES/SNES remakes aren't as faithful to the original, the PS1 remake is mostly (but not 100%) translated, and the original Apple II release is, well, an Apple II game and is a little sore on the eyes.

For anyone who has played the original trilogy, what would you say is the best way to experience it? Seems like each have their flaws.

The Wizardry series is great! Ridiculously cryptic and sadistically punishing, but great!
A fan translation of Busin 0: Wizardry Alternative NEO would be the absolute dream for me.

Tale of the Forsaken Land was absolutely fantastic and it's a crying shame we never got the sequel over here.
There's a fanmade translation guide floating around, as another user on here kindly informed me a while ago, but I still really hope someone eventually tackles that game for a full patch.

Well, i'm on B2... maybe a more fitting name for the game was "The Backtracking Land"! 😂

I must admit none of games i have played so far had this level of backtracking... it's to the point that it's a part of story too!
I'm not used to it... yet it's a new experience! 🌟

Take in account the Wizardry series is from back in the Apple IIc days and was made to kick your ass.
and is one of the innovators of the dungeon crawl genre.

To be honest, this looks way better than my first experiences with the series.. 👀

My very first came from a weird obscure 3½ in. floppy disk I bought for like a dollar, and my second experience was the first NES version.

The Snes version of Wizardry 1-3 is easier and have great pixel-art on top of it . Playing it right now .

The Ps1 version is great too but there are settings to switch from japanese into english and not everything is translated .

Another and more passive possibility to enjoy Wizardry is the OVA Anime which is awesome , faithful to the RPG and almost a hour long .
