I'll always love this series, but will also be the first to admit that it's not for everyone
Growing up in the 80s, we didn't have a home computer, so I missed out on the earliest versions. But I did rent the NES port a few times, and absolutely adored it! Didn't get very far, but thankfully, the rental store included the [hefty] instruction manual, so I had a good idea of how to build a party, what to do regarding skills and alignments, etc.
Definitely a game that requires a guide or the original manual, but if you're willing to do some reading before you begin - and map out the dungeon as you go - you're in for a nice time. A nice, mercilessly-difficult time
My favorite part of any RPG has always been character creation and party customization. I absolutely
hate being forced to play with a pre-named protagonist and their friends, following
their story and wrapping up
their loose ends. Some games handle this better than others, but for the most part, a game that lets me customize my party from the outset and play the game my own way is all I'm really looking for in any RPG. And Wizardry - along with the original Final Fantasy - was one of the first games I played that allowed me to do just that
