Will AI machine translation help fan translation game projects?

I had come to say exactly this.

Way too many great games would be unplayable otherwise... Besides, it doesn't even have to be final! Someone else could come along and do it "right" after the pressure of getting there first is out of the equation!

I agree completely.
I'm glad that AI translations are available, and the level of quality shown so far is excellent.

Thank you to everyone who is working with AI tools to bring us new translations.

Without them, I don't think we'd be seeing any of these old but fantastic games translated (SRW Z2, Segagaga, Langrisser V).

And the best part, the coders who make these AI patches are offering their files, so that human translators can come in if they have a script to offer.

I personally would not ask someone to labour 100% over a script that's bigger than War and Peace, when I can have the AI do the first pass. If people want to come in later and revise it afterwards, do go ahead.

It genuinely depends on the game that's being assisted by it to be honest.

If it's an action focused game, I welcome machine translation to help me at least get through the menus & whatnot to not blindly run around like a fool because I don't understand what I'm doing.

If it's an RPG or a story-driven game filled with character-nuance and how interactions / jokes made by characters help to enrich the experience, then yes I'd prefer the touch of human hands doing their best to interpret those interactions.

AI translation is better than nothing. And with human proofreading, the results can be satisfactory.

Off course is better than nothing. Who in the right set of mind would say otherwise?
And as you mentioned, with the oversight of an human revisor, is clearly the way foward to go. That is exactly what I already said in my previous take on the matter. And I also did a massive breaktrough about the inns and outs of the AI endevour. If there is something that the AI could be very usefull to, is to streamline those complex time consuming process, and of course work of passion.

I used to be strongly against AI translations.
I’ve met people who work in the industry, and I know very well how important the human element is in these projects. That said, I really hope AI advances to the point where we can produce translations without too many hurdles.

Recent controversies have reminded me just how damaging the human element can be, ego, drama queens, and all that unnecessary BS that we wouldn’t have to put up with anymore and that axed many projects. It would be a huge relief for everyone. I think a community can create a decent project using AI, and the PSP SRW has been a good example of that, with many people providing feedback and the author making corrections whenever possible. Maybe that’s the way to go.

With these developments in AI technology, just imagine how many more retranslations of Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy 6 we can make!

The sad truth is that some fan translators are no better than localizer. I would welcome an AI translation over the war crimes committed against Tear Ring Saga by the "translator" that turned it into a facfic.

And not just linguistic differences, but also cultural differences; it's not uncommon to make references to something that someone from another country wouldn't understand, and that would need to be changed also
Disgusting take, make me read 2 pages of context instead.
