Every since Xenoblade Chronicles X was announced to be remastered and ported to Switch.

If seems that most of the Wii U Greatest Hits get ported to the Switch. Make sense due to Wii U is Nintendo Modern Failure every since Virtual Boy. Unlike the Virtual Boy, the Wii U actually had a good game library and at least it's playable.

Since most of the Wii U Library had been ported. It's look like the Wii U is the next 3DO than the infamous Virtual Boy. In few years, Wii U games will go up in price like 3DO & GameCube games. Hey anything is possible.

Gotta be honest, I first found out about it through a Teenage Pokemon roast (you know it's bad when a cancelled webseries roasts you), and immediately forgot about it after a BirdyBoots playthrough of one of the Zelda games ported into the system.

You are correct in a lot of this

I wanted to get a modded Wii U but I think it has no value

If you really wanna play the uncensored version of Tokyo Mirage FE, there you go (even the jap switch version uses the international version as a base)
Maybe the same for Xenoblade X? Im not sure

Its the best way to play ds games on a tv

And....
If it ever gets a video player it will join the ps3 as one of the easier ways to watch stuff on a crt these days

Yeah but Tokyo Mirage suuuuuuuuucks, it sucks as an FE game, it sucks as an Megaten game, it just sucks...

Is like there is no point to the wii u aside from specific mods for some games (smash bros and zelda botw for example)

I really wanted a wii u for MH3U but now the servers are dead. And unofficials servers are probably gonna work on CEMU soo... what was the point of the wii u again?

Wii U still had great games. 3DO was complete dogshit.
Games that no longer are exclusive to it...
Legit only had the Wii U as the Xenoblade X machine before it got announced for the Switch.

star fox zero port wen?
If God hears you, never lol.

Luckily I found my Wii U at Value Village for like 50 bucks (minus the cables) but even so at 80$ combined to play the entire library (or just Xenoblade...) was good enough & I got my use out of it.

But as it stands, yup! This thing surpringly has very little use, err, after it's been used. Even the main gimmick of the Wii U actually backfires in some cases, where I would rather use a controller for games like Fatal Frame 5. DS stuff is arguably better on any XL DS, & the Wii aspect is visually pretty bad. Which is weird because Nintendon't/cube games look great!

PS3 is a beast for that stuff! As long as it's not HEVC/x265 encoded it will read off your HD. That's already setting the bar pretty high for the Wii U.

Wow, sounds like I'm dissing the Wii U huh. T-Trust me! I was giddy as a kid in a candy store when I got my thrift store Wii U!
Pretendo is still growing & free online for free games is a bonus but still.

Riiiight, pretendo is a thing. I wonder how it will work for the Xenoblade stuff, hell now that you mention it, I wonder how it will work for DE now, I don't have a Nintendo Online sub, so I wonder if I'll be locked out of content for it...

Hmm

I think WiiU's also thje easiest way to play pixel low budget games on a crt? Though the thing cant output 240p so...

I find it hilarious how Donkey Kong Tropical freeze didnt use the pad for a Damn thing, not even a picture of a banana. hardest diss ver

Well! It's just the accumalation of these stuff that basically makes the Wii U feels like the way it is lol.

I'd like agree on the CRT retro game part... but the normal base Wii exists & those are a dime-a-dozen at any thrift store, & actually might be the cheapest video game console on the market?

It certainly seems to be internationally, here in italy you can get a ps1 and 2 for 10-50 euros but Ive heard the prices are all messed up in northamerica, the wii is also 10-50

Well the wii doesnt have freedom planet and shovel knight, there
hmm...the Wiiu has the best version of the best tekken game if you can get a good controller for it somehow!!

"If you really, really want to play Devil's Third, get a Wii U!"

Is there a difference in playing a Wii U on a CRT? Dosen't it have a HDMI cable?

Oh ya. Duh! We were trying to think of positive points about the system but fundamentally forgot why would you use a Wii U on a CRT in the first place. Mmm, maybe in an alternate timeline where flat screens don't exist.

If theres a way to play any game on a crt, I will do it

I also have a friend who's crazy for CRTs so I understand the craze, it's just... We are argueing the benefits of the Wii U on a CRT... I'm pretty sure Nintendo Land won't get better with those scanlines lol!

Modded WiiUs had so much value for the last decade or so since it was inarguably the most universal emulation machine, but now that the Switch successor is releasing people may as well just mod their Switch for the same purpose. I still love my WiiU but it is definitely hard to say that my reasons for turning it on are for little more than general nostalgia. Since I mod my last-gen systems after the new-gen ones release I doubt I'll get much play out of the WiiU.

I can't imagine wanting to run a WiiU on a non-HD display. CRTs are fantastic but their use-case is definitely not with post-6th generation consoles.

You really think the new console will be something entirely different? I think it's going to be what the "New" Nintendo 3DS was for the og 3DS. Better clock speed, more gizmos and gimmicks, and if all's right on the world: a better screen.

Nah, I'm expecting Nintendo's next system to just be a more powerful Switch in the way the 3DS was just a more powerful DS. But the modded WiiU's big claim to fame is that it was the best way to play almost every Nintendo system alongside a bunch of other emulators for a bunch consoles from 5th gen and prior. Main system that mattered was the DS, since of course the WiiU gamepad gave you a very natural way of playing dual screen games and using touch controls the way they were meant to be used.

The Switch however does all the emulation goodness that the WiiU does and then some ON TOP of having an absurdly good library of its own AND having ports of nearly every WiiU game that matters. If your choice is between a modded WiiU and a modded Switch, there just isn't much of a debate to be had. DS games technically play more naturally on WiiU thanks to the gamepad's form factor, but it's not the biggest deal in the world considering how much more the modded Switch lets you do in general.

Anyways, all I really want from the Switch 2 is backwards compatibility and an OLED screen day 1. We already have backwards compatibility confirmed, so now I just gotta hope for the OLED.

My boyfriend and I were just talking about this tonight! The Wii U was by no means a perfect console, but it had some good sides. It had a solid library of both indie and first party titles, though yes, most of the good Wii U exclusives were ported to the Switch. It's great modded, which my boyfriend has thankfully done. But the biggest reason we keep it around is full backwards compatibility with Wii games and GameCube games (if modded) through an HDMI connection.

I will never forgive the gimmicky motion controls and use of the gamepad though. I swear, if Star Fox Zero is the end of the franchise because of that, I will riot.

We decided the true damp squib was the Xbox One. There was the Kinect 2.0 fiasco before it was even launched and the amount of exclusive games was absolutely pathetic. Rare Replay is like the only worthwhile one. I guess it did have some backwards compatibility with some Xbox and Xbox 360 games and I really like the controller. But, uh, yeah. Biggest waste of a console I've ever bought.
