Is it true certain models of the Wii has backwards compatibility to play gamecube if so
thats really cool.
they all can run gamecube but the ones you need to be aware that dont are Wii Mini and the Wii Family edition which is the Wii with the logo horizontal

Wii Family Edition: You can tell cause this one has no opening trays on the top.

Yeah. Of course it's true. And you can use Nintendont to load GC ISOS. Not all of them work, anyways.

In fact, I have a backwards compatible Wii with GC controllers plugged and never use it to play Wii games.

That wii mini looks good think ill try and get one of them. Never actually owned a wii but now i know this id like to own one for physical copies of games.

Careful the Wii mini has no internet connection, but there is a way via a guide. Just buy a standard Wii they are cheap and easy to hack

All that's missing are the Classic Remotes, the Wiimotion Plus Accessory, the Wii Zapper Accessory, etc. and it would already be the most complete package of what it already is.

You can jailbreak a Wii Mini, then run gamecube games via USB on it.

But yeah, since you mentioned owning physical games, then the standard Wii is the one for you.

Only the first model can play GameCube games.
That's what I thought, but other users claim Wii Mini can... I really don't know! I mean, can you use Nintendont on them? Or are we just talking about retail CD games?

Actually, you can play physical Gamecube games with the Wii Family Edition. You only need to get a drive from the 1st Wii, then replace it. It will read the games like the original one, but you will need to hack it to emulate the Gamecube controller through the classic one. Soldering the ports is also possible though.

Yeah. Like said generally there is models that are backwards compatible and ones that are not.
That said when you mod a wii, even Wii U what is used these days to load and play legal backups of GameCube disc images is "Nintendont" and this homebrew is bit funky. It runs GameCube games as Wii software breaking some limitations. Only issue is usage of non-gamecube controllers. One thing I think even non-wii u wii consoles can use is the Wii U/Switch gamecube controller adapter, but those are just about less common than a Wii console that has 4/5 change if not higher of being equipped with GameCube compatibility and ports for the accessories.
Cool stuff enabled by nintendont is Wifi or Wired connectivity for broadband adapter emulation that enables games, namely Phantasy Star Online, connect online as well.

TL;DR: Generally, "Any wii is compatible" but value of an actual GameCube controller and being able to connect them to the console is still high enough that one would avoid getting rarer models that are an hindrance. If you have a DualShock 3, 4 or such Nintendont will serve even those people just fine.

I think it's a boomer, because Wii Mini is so cute...you can transform it into something really cool adding to it the SD card reader and the reset button. If you're skilled enough, you can add the wifi port, but I can live without it.

You can play both GameCube & Wii backups on a external hard drive with 2 specific partitions

Technically all models can play GameCube games via homebrew

It took me years before I learnt about the "Wii Family" model.

It is also not always marketed like that.
In Europe they sold them and it just was "the Wii model in stores right now" for last slice of it's commercial existence, if I recall correctly. Also since Wii Mini came out here, likely replaced by that very quickly.
