PS3 Why don't people like The Last Of Us?

I've seen my nephews play it over and over again. Maybe I got spoiled too much but that's not the only reason why I haven't played it yet.

I feel like the game is going to steer me towards certain moral and political stances that I disagree with. That kind of dissonance I'll get keeps me from starting the game even though we have a copy of it. And now that I've also seen where the story is headed in Last of Us 2 from watching my nephew's playthrough, I feel like I'll have a miserable time if I get attached too much to the characters in light of that certain most controversial "assassination" at the start of the sequel.

I don't care that much about zombie themed media. There has been a massive burst in the 2010's but nowadays there's a "fatigue" about the genre (it happened to sci fi, fantasy and even western).

While it was an impressive late 7th gen game I feel that too many AAA wanted to be the next TLoU without actually improving gameplay or even game design, we came to a stagnation for over a decade.

I'd even say that Resident Evil 4 already existed for the TPS genre (followed by Dead Space) so I'm not sure if this one really made a new step in there.

Oh and before I forget the whole "we can save humanity but sadly the girl has to die from extraction" feels like bad writing because it makes little to no sense.

As someone who likes the Last of US my assumptions are
1.Its a very cinematic game (I like it but there are people who hate it)
2.Its a playstation exclusives and not many people where ready buying a new console just to play a game.
3.::cirnoshrug
maybe the combat system and Story ??

I'm specifically talking about the first one, since we all know the kind of dumpster fire the sequel was.

I honestly thought it was a masterpiece worthy of replaying again and again, but I have met no shortage of people (specially here, on RGT) that hate it passionately.

Just... Why? I'm not dismissing you -- I'm genuinely curious about it.
im not a fan of cinematic games
the success of TLOU may have contributed for sony to focus on more story focused games than actual, yknow gameplay focused games

I attempted to play it, but didn't get far and kinda lost interest. Something about that gameplay loop which is extremely linear and switches between the "passive part" which is walking forward listening to dialogues/watching cutscenes to the more "active part" of doing some shooting and whatnot just didn't sit well with me. I guess I could say I like to be either in playing mode or watching mode, not switching between then constantly. Then again I don't find "the walking dead"-esque stories particularly interesting no matter how well executed they are. But still, I gotta say, the game had the best looking graphics I ever saw.

They don't call MGS games that,
Metal Gear Solid 4 says hello. Though that was done more playfully, unless you are Yahtzee or hater of the game.
I'd even say that Resident Evil 4 already existed for the TPS genre (followed by Dead Space) so I'm not sure if this one really made a new step in there.
There'sthere is a reason why I said it's literally just RE4 with stealth and much more 'serious' tonally wise. As far as third person shooters go that are over the shoulder, there's so much better out there. Evil West being one of them.

TLOU may have contributed for sony to focus on more story focused games than actual, yknow gameplay focused games
Rift Apart, Norse Duology, Tsushima and Yotei, Returnal, and even Days Gone have way more gameplay ratio than both TLOUS games. Now I do admit that sony should just be doing more than cinematic games and i'm glad they finally got off the live service train. We got Sackboy and Astrobot, but more can be done. The same people who made Returnal are making that new game. It's definitely more gameplay focused.

I assume Intergalactic will be even worse after the backlash they got.
I'm actually interested in Intergalactic, so long as he doesn't have his head up his own utt again. All said: it's taking them forever to show actual gameplay. So my interest is already waning, until they give me something concrete. As far as the online backlash goes, it's really not gonna matter much. The rage grifters are gonna grift, no matter what happens or what he says. Ignore the fools and they can fuck off as always. They don't decide the fate of these games. They couldn't kill TLOUS2, nor any of the other story in single player Sony games. Assholes are pathetic losers with nothing better to do in their lives.

Neil is making games not for the fans who love his work, but to piss off the haters who don't
That's a rotten, dangerous stance to take and I'm not sure I'd trust someone with billions of dollars to make it happen.

But, then again, it's not like Sony is hurting for money or anything.

I don't hate it but I found it to be overhyped, Gameplay wise it's Uncharted minus the parkour, Story wise it's your typical zombie story, there are other games/media that did those two aspects better, makes me wonder if people who praise it to high heaven haven't actually play lots of video games before.

it had to sell well as the marketing behind it was huge and it was Sony's flagship game. But one could also see that it seriously tarnished Naughty Dog's reputation to the point beyond redemption and the company was never the same again.
TLOU aimed at the players who wanted something serious (18 age rating) vs the Uncharted series (Teen rating).
They screwed big time in becoming the #1 company in that respect, while disappointed fans left Naughty Dog and moved to other games like Days Gone

Despite the online and loud vocal minority against the game, it still sold great. I don't like the game either, but not much I can do about it. I happily said good for audience who wanted this and kept my attention on better things, and not the discord.
On the topic though, I like both games for different reasons, but there is one revelation I got while watching Sony's podcast with Neil Druckmann and Alex Garland: Neil is making games not for the fans who love his work, but to piss off the haters who don't. And you can really feel it in TLOU2, so I assume Intergalactic will be even worse after the backlash they got.

I mean, people have a variety of tastes and opinions. There is no game that everybody loves. Personally I enjoyed the first one a lot. I couldn't finish the sequel, mainly because I didn't enjoy the second half of it and I was still reeling over the events that transpired over the first half. But gameplay wise both are solid and whenever I play ARC Raiders, I think about what could have been when Naughty Dog announced the Factions 2 online game. Not so much the robots but the survival, hiding, looting and crafting all feel very reminiscent of The Last of Us gameplay.
I thought the original Factions online mode of first The Last of Us game was very unique and a lot of fun! I was really disappointed when Sony/ND decided to cancel Factions 2 because they didn't haven confidence in it. I bet after seeing the huge success of ARC Raiders that they are somewhat regretting that decision, and rightfully so!

Naughty Dog's reputation to the point beyond redemption and the company was never the same again.
"Beyond Redemption" my ass. They are still here. Like them or not. Intergalactic, looks like they're going for a more fun adventure romp, but once again, I'll wait till I see actual gameplay footage. I've still met plenty of fans who are fans of naughty dog even if they do or don't like the second TLOUS game.

fans left Naughty Dog and moved to other games like Days Gone
A few fans here and there, leaving won't harm them. Funny you mentioned the other game, cuz plenty of those same 'fans' were more than happy to rip on Days Gone, and called it a "shallow clone" without actually playing it. They only came crawling to it because they had no other choice, and decided the backpedal, hoping nobody would notice. New flash: everyone did who bothered to pay attention.

Something that gets popular/lots of attention will get alot of dislikes as well. Especially once it hits mainstream. There are people out there that hate Beatles, Taylor Swift, BTS, Pokemon, Harry Potter, MCU, Star Wars, etc.
There's bad juju with the sequel. The original writer isn't responsible for it, and the guy that replaced him was criticized by old guard Naughty Dog talent. Woman behind the Jak series no less.

Despite TLOU1 being one of my favorite first-party Sony games, I dislike how it made Sony invest in only cinematic third-person games. You either get those or live service games, not much of anything else.

Bring back Resistance, Motorstorm, Wipeout, work with Bandai Namco on a new RIIIIIIIDGE RACER, and let's get some interesting and experimental games like Flower, Journey, Rain, The Last Guy, Afrika, Tokyo Jungle, Concrete Genie, etc.

That's me.

most ppl have hit it dead on. The big problem with TLOU (and especially TLOU2) is that it dives in too heavily on the story aspect of the experience while neglecting the gameplay part... and the story isn't even good!!! TLOU2 especially was hyped up to be "an emotional experience" and one that "wanted to make you feel uncomfortable" but it did none of these and the story was just full of hollywood tropes and cringeworthy moments.

The fact that they made a 2 season TV show about a game that so desperately wanted to be a TV show is also not without its own irony.

I don't hate tlou, just it's not the big deal for me. Yeah, the relation between Joel and Ellie is well developed and the ending is quite good, however, it didn't blow my mind. I think it's just fine and same goes for gameplay. Shooting is fine, stealth is fine, hand-to-hand combat is fine. Everything about the last of us is fine (At least in my opinion), and that's it; It's not very good or excellent or perfect. I see it as good game and nothing else.

I loved the first one, I play the shit out of it before Drunkman got crazy and his ego eat him alive.

but I can see why people didnt like, in the same way why I can see people not liking games like MGS3, a game that you can easily reach 2 hour of play and only actually control your character like 10 minutes.

Some people just dont like try hard cinematic games, and thats fine. Game like DooM didnt waste time with a set up (or even connecting its own prequel, 2016 > Eternal) and just let the player start shooting and smashing instantly.

I do remember trying to watch a longplay of the second one as soon as it released and it took the guy like fifteen hours of continuous gameplay (without fucking up once (!)) to get it done.

That... Was discouraging.
