I'm specifically talking about the first one, since we all know the kind of dumpster fire the sequel was.

I honestly thought it was a masterpiece worthy of replaying again and again, but I have met no shortage of people (specially here, on RGT) that hate it passionately.

Just... Why? I'm not dismissing you -- I'm genuinely curious about it.

Same reason a lot of people dislike cinematic games in general. The gameplay looks boring. A decent amount of people are gameplay > story.

Fatigue and/or popularity may or may not play into it because TLoU has gotten a lot more than most of Sony’s legacy franchises, leading to contrarians.

And of course there’s everything about the creator that caused him to be a boogeyman on one side of the internet, which has caused some people to lump it in with the sequel in a rather desperate attempt to be like “SEE?! This game was ALWAYS trash!”

I don't like games that try too hard to be movies, that's pretty much it. There's a lot better ways you can use video games to tell a story, you don't have to mimic an inferior medium. I should probably also mention I'm just not big into movies in general. ::sailor-embarrassed I basically only watch them these days when I'm dragged into seeing them with friends and family.

I've never played it and don't really know much about it other than apparently people like the story or something. I see it a lot on steam. What little bit I have seen of it doesn't really look all that appealing to me and I don't really have much interest in trying it.

I don't hate TLOUS, but I sure as hell don't give a damn about it. I'll give credit where its due with the writing and characters, but the gameplay doesn't interest me that much. It's RE4 with a stealth system. Plus, I have long been over dark and gritty 3rd person shooters from 7th generation. Not that I was the biggest fan of the majority of them to begin with.

I do find the game to be over hyped and overrated to the detriment of other games that did similar subject matter(s), before it even became a mere thought in the director's head. Not helping are the large amount of critics putting down others games for not being like either title, or downplaying past games' accomplishments that achieved the same goal, but not having their heads up their ass about it.

Give me Resident Evil, House of the Dead, Shadows of the Damned, and most games in general any day of the week either both games.

Because video games are supposed to be for fun, and to play with. Not watching a boring cinematic TV Movie.

The first one is good (not great) but the second one is ........ well ......... really BAD, like nauseatingly BAD.

Not sure what else I can add. I played the original when it came out and loved it. Not because the gameplay was amazing. It was kind of just another Uncharted game. But my investment in the story and characters helped set it apart. So much so that the first season of the TV show even brought me back into the franchise a little after TLOU 2 completely knocked me out. It's a little funny, because being invested in the characters is what made TLOU 2 so... bad, to me.

But yeah, Sony kind of started using that third-person cinematic action game as a template for the last decade+, so the gameplay for the first game is only going to feel more generic as time passes. It's part of why I find Horizon Zero Dawn & Ghost of Tsushima so boring.

the opposite happened. Players adored tlous1, but hated tlou2.
do not let sales fool you, sequel was a dumbster fire.

I only played about 90 minutes of it but it was enough for me to put it down and not come back. Not really sure what didn't click. Maybe it's just an Insomniac thing for me, I don't really care for Uncharted either, so it might boil down to their way of storytelling. Not 100% sure.

It didn't leave enough of an impression on me to hate it. I thought the ending was cool, but like a lot of Zombie movies/games there's no justification for what you see happening. It's all contrived and comes off lame in a lot of ways as a result. The actual game's mechanics were alright. But, there was still some annoying stuff. Needing to "buy" the ability to aim your gun and consistently stealth kill enemies wasn't the best decision for a tech tree.

I enjoyed the first game and the DLC but the second game on the other hand was the one that killed my interest in the series for me completely.

I had high hopes for the sequel but the story ruined it for me. I wish Naughty Dog would make a new Uncharted or Jak and Dexter again.

The first game was rely good not the best I played but very good. Second game however is utter trash with shitty revenge story and shitty new charters and game play became rather repetitive fast. Also Niel fuckman is an utter narcissistic knob.

But then again Sony of america has done way way to many revenges stories im sick of them all. Honestly the first game was a nice story about surviving a post apocalyptic earth with a father that lost his daughter while taking care of a new kid and treat her like his own was a very good story.

Then sadly Niel shitman got a narcissistic stroke and Messed it all up. Honestly ever sense he took over by pushing out the original owner the whole company has gone to hell and so all the games they made.

But yeah first game is very good then idiot happen.

All I know that the first one is well received. When the second one came and that TV series drops that when the people felt the dislike of the franchise. Sadly even though the first one is great it got overshadowed by the disdain for the ones that come preceded it.

It's a moviegame and non-casual gamers tend to dislike moviegames

Something that gets popular/lots of attention will get alot of dislikes as well. Especially once it hits mainstream. There are people out there that hate Beatles, Taylor Swift, BTS, Pokemon, Harry Potter, MCU, Star Wars, etc.

Also often there is a huge difference of opinion between critics and audiences

Such was the case with tlous2, sweeping any script holes between the two games to justify the changes under the rug. I do not hold video game critics in high esteem either

I dunno. My dad started playing it when he bought a prettybpowerful laptop for "more tasking works" and he loved it. I think he played the sequel too and he also liked it. That's a little strange since I know he doesn't like games that go that far to be cinematic.

Despite the online and loud vocal minority against the game, it still sold great. I don't like the game either, but not much I can do about it. I happily said good for audience who wanted this and kept my attention on better things, and not the discord.

Its so funny to see people still call these games "movies", like there are no large stretches of gameplay between the cutscenes. They don't call MGS games that, so its just an excuse to hate something popular that they don't get. Capital G gamers are alergic to slower pacing I guess, and god forbid if the game has very well made cutscenes to tell its story.

On the topic though, I like both games for different reasons, but there is one revelation I got while watching Sony's podcast with Neil Druckmann and Alex Garland: Neil is making games not for the fans who love his work, but to piss off the haters who don't. And you can really feel it in TLOU2, so I assume Intergalactic will be even worse after the backlash they got.
