Why do people delete their accounts?

From what i saw on the other social medias, they mostly just want to forget the time they had there.
They mostly find it to be annoying, embarassing, stuff like that.
I even saw some people who where like "i wish i had access to my old account just to delete it".

I deleted my Facebook account. I had a Twitter, but I never used it and I don't remember if I deleted it or not? ::thinking In both senses, I hardly used them and felt emotionally worse for engaging with them. I don't always bother deleting though. I still have my YouTube account, even though I don't actually use it to watch YT.

I couldn't say what causes me to delete an account vs keeping one and just not using it. All I know is that it does suck to see people who you'd had good interactions with delete their accounts. I still remember thecrow, and the guy who made his own cyberpunk themed artwork. The user with the Shinobi pfp (was it Segadude? I don't always remember user names >_<) I don't know if they deleted their account, but I haven't seen tacomeister around in a good couple of months now. In situations like that though, all I can do is hope they left or took a break of their own volition and that they're ok and taking care of themselves.

Yeah it gets really confusing. It takes the context out of some threads. I guess I am a little confused, though...are there "levels" to deletion? Gorse and MistHunter, for example, still have their names on their posts. The context is maintained. For others, it just says deleted user number whatever, so there's usually zero way to know who it was. Did Gorse and MistHunter not actually delete their accounts, just abandon them? If so, that is inadvertently inconsiderate compared to the deleters. Not that I would expect someone who feels the need to delete their account to consider preserving the sanctity of the Forum Timeline(TM), but they could. It makes more sense if the staff deleted someone's account and banned them that the traces of their identity would be torched also.

I just use the same name everywhere, for the most part. If someone wants to find me or scam me, well, they are welcome to try and steal my identity and student loan debt, I guess. My email, phone number and other info gets sold to scammers and spammers whether I'm posting on forums or not. And if I get bored of this place or too busy to post, I'll just...stop. I won't delete it or make a big deal, I'll just wander away. Not that I see that happening.

The thought of things getting deleted over time does make me think of all the various posts on websites that have deleted/missing links to megaupload and mediafire and other file sharing sites. It definitely dulls the excitement of finding an old webpage that might otherwise provide a way to obtain something obscure or otherwise unavailable.

The only times I have deleted accounts, its for temp accounts for using something once or twice, sometimes I just forget I have them until I get an email saying "your account will be deleted due to inactivity."

If people want to leave, that's fine, and by deleting their account, it just feels that its unlikely to see them back, the whys aren't important imo.

In my case, I never consider myself part of any community, so I just see accounts as an open seat for me to take and be entertained for a while.

I was just thinking of this. I see so many "I'm going to delete my Fabebook" type posts. Some people threaten it until they get the desired reaction then come back in two days all "I'm back gaiz!". We literally don't care.😮‍💨

I know of a certain person who will threaten to delete social media then come back in a few days and complain no one is paying attention to them. You know people like this were huge brats as kids.
Thing is users on RGT are so decent that they will give said person attention out of goodwill and it fuels their attention whoring attitude even more i seen it.....it's MFs that want to be the center of attention ALWAYS

Because you grow up, you change, you mature, and at some point you look back on everything you posted online with embarrassment.

Yeah, maybe... It happens a lot here, too, and this site has only been around for a year and change, though.
I'm glad I don't remember my own personal details (real name, address, etc.), there is no way I can accidentally reveal it online.
Oh! Invoking the unbeatable Farnsworth defense, I see.

You, sir, are a true opponent.

(Can't find the damn image XD).

Some users have mentioned that their reason for deleting their account is to avoid the temptation of coming back, rather than actually wanting to delete it... and we have seen this many times before too.

That gave us the idea to create a Locked Mode option.
If it’s implemented successfully, it can be a good alternative to deletion for users who prefer it.

I think this feature can have very positive effects in the long run! 🌟

Funnily enough I've recently "soft-locked" myself from another xenforo forum by changing the email I first used to join and not verifying the new one, same purpose of avoiding for a brief time. Opt-in areas of the forum are now completely hidden for me and, practically, it works by denying or preventing some features like text-boxes to post either on my profile/forums/DMs or reacting features. It became a read-only forum even if I'm able to login to change the contact info once more. Made that before this thread was even created, btw... lol

I can't speak for anyone else, but I used to be on a forum that, to be blunt, fed an addiction of mine that was ruining my life. The other users were fun to talk to, sure, but at the end of the day, everyone there was an addict celebrating our addiction.

So, I left. Deleted my account so I couldn't log back in during one of the many moments of weakness every addict goes through.

That's just one time though. Unsure if it counts.
