Why do people delete their accounts?

From what i saw on the other social medias, they mostly just want to forget the time they had there.
They mostly find it to be annoying, embarassing, stuff like that.
I even saw some people who where like "i wish i had access to my old account just to delete it".

I deleted my Facebook account. I had a Twitter, but I never used it and I don't remember if I deleted it or not? ::thinking In both senses, I hardly used them and felt emotionally worse for engaging with them. I don't always bother deleting though. I still have my YouTube account, even though I don't actually use it to watch YT.

I couldn't say what causes me to delete an account vs keeping one and just not using it. All I know is that it does suck to see people who you'd had good interactions with delete their accounts. I still remember thecrow, and the guy who made his own cyberpunk themed artwork. The user with the Shinobi pfp (was it Segadude? I don't always remember user names >_<) I don't know if they deleted their account, but I haven't seen tacomeister around in a good couple of months now. In situations like that though, all I can do is hope they left or took a break of their own volition and that they're ok and taking care of themselves.

Yeah it gets really confusing. It takes the context out of some threads. I guess I am a little confused, though...are there "levels" to deletion? Gorse and MistHunter, for example, still have their names on their posts. The context is maintained. For others, it just says deleted user number whatever, so there's usually zero way to know who it was. Did Gorse and MistHunter not actually delete their accounts, just abandon them? If so, that is inadvertently inconsiderate compared to the deleters. Not that I would expect someone who feels the need to delete their account to consider preserving the sanctity of the Forum Timeline(TM), but they could. It makes more sense if the staff deleted someone's account and banned them that the traces of their identity would be torched also.

I just use the same name everywhere, for the most part. If someone wants to find me or scam me, well, they are welcome to try and steal my identity and student loan debt, I guess. My email, phone number and other info gets sold to scammers and spammers whether I'm posting on forums or not. And if I get bored of this place or too busy to post, I'll just...stop. I won't delete it or make a big deal, I'll just wander away. Not that I see that happening.

The thought of things getting deleted over time does make me think of all the various posts on websites that have deleted/missing links to megaupload and mediafire and other file sharing sites. It definitely dulls the excitement of finding an old webpage that might otherwise provide a way to obtain something obscure or otherwise unavailable.

The only times I have deleted accounts, its for temp accounts for using something once or twice, sometimes I just forget I have them until I get an email saying "your account will be deleted due to inactivity."

If people want to leave, that's fine, and by deleting their account, it just feels that its unlikely to see them back, the whys aren't important imo.

In my case, I never consider myself part of any community, so I just see accounts as an open seat for me to take and be entertained for a while.
