Geek time. Having "Nintendo" & "waifu" in the same sentence will always be weird to me. Before Big N embraced anime, we had very slim pickings.
Zelda barely had screentime anywhere. We only had single frame artwork of Zero Suit Samus in games. Pokemon gym leaders always seemed cool, but once again just single sprites. The Fire Emblems were really the only ones that (literally) did wife material.

I'd argue that Ocarina of Time was kinda the first one where almost every girl wants to flirt with you (& all the character designs & promo artwork to go with it). I can almost guarantee that everybody has a childhood ex from that game.
