I have been thinking about extracting the text from the sega cd version and working on how to port it over to psx and saturn, but i have been lacking the motivation to try.

Please let me know your feelings on the subject, and i may start working on this, this year. Please note: my time is very restrictive, so i may only give updates sparingly if i do work on this, with it probably not finishing for some time.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks to all those who respond.

On a side note, if i get some help, i have been thinking about eldarado gate on dream cast, but this is much bigger and more involved, so would probably need help if it can be done. No promises!

If I'm being honest, the PS1/Saturn version of Snatcher isn't a huge update over the Sega CD version, if at all. Sure the graphics are technically better (mostly due to color choices), but the aesthetics are actually worse (for both graphics and music), and they censored the game's violence and nudity even more (especially on PS1). Plus Katrina was made to look younger despite that already having been a problem that was solved on Sega CD. I'd prefer an uncensoring patch for the Sega CD (put back in the twitching guts scene, the whale meat reference that was replaced by the now dated buffalo reference, the characters at Outer Heaven, the Predator mask, and the scenes with Lisa and Katrina).

I think it'd be better to focus on Eldorado's Gate, which is more unanimously wanted.

The problem with that would be lack of any other version of the Sega CD to draw the source from. You would have to somehow port the TG-16s graphics to the Sega CD version, which was built from the ground up for North America and Europe, or draw them from the ground up yourself.

I do have to say that I am super attached to the Voice Acting on the Sega CD version. It really set a standard that wasn't matched until Metal Gear Solid. Only Kojima can out Kojima Kojima.

If you're able to port the translation to PSX and Saturn, I'd definitively love to see that happen!
It's always great to see already existing translations being made available for most, if not all, versions of a game. Regardless of if said versions have several changes or none at all, just having options is great, and it could also help a lot in learning how a console and its games work, if that's what you're looking to get from this.
Theres plenty of games that have translations but not on certain versions which I would like to port myself (Sakura Wars on Dreamcast comes to mind), but I probably lack the time and knowledge to do such a thing, so seeing someone else take on that tast is certainly nice.

From what I understand the Sega CD version is the definitive version, so I don't know that there's much incentive for this to happen.

Well this will be a learning curve for me with de-compiling the sega cd version to get hold of the text files, and then de-compiling the psx and saturn one to add this in.

There are known tools already in existence to achieve this, and since it is text only, the work to do is allot less then say making the game uncensored.

The aim is to get a minimal effort for time i have available to get the patch done, and since the sega cd version is already there, it should provide a good bench mark.

Regarding psx and saturn versions being inferior, for sure! But being able to allow others to compare and come to that conclusion also, will open up more people experiencing snatcher.

Dipending on my success rate here, i could try and work on a PC-E translation, again using the same text on the sega cd one. As that could be a happy work around for some, but again, tool availability to do so. I can contact others on what they have achieved with thier PC-E ports and see what kind of input they could offer, but this will be after if i manage to get the psx and saturn ports done.

I think a PC-Engine fan translation would be more interesting to see as it's the only completely uncensored version. Besides, while Blaustein's script could be used as a base for translating the Japanese script, it would still need some QC as there's quite a few script differences, like Random originally being Randam as a nod to the Metal Gear series.

PC-Engine doesn't have many patches but I'm sure many would be interested in seeing the PC-E version of Snatcher get translated.

You know where i can find it? i can check it out and it might give me a head start.

PC-Engine version, there's no patch for it. I'm sure there is a text version the Script some where, but If your just gonna rip out the Sega Cd translation, and why wouldn't you, then the TG-16 version should be on the to-do list.

Also, there was a kid who wanted a Japanese dub for the Sega CD version.

Ok i think i follow now, "Blaustein's script" meaning the person who translated the Sega cd version. Sorry, i am a goof who has a problem with English it seems ^^;;

Was there not already a Japanese sega cd version though? If not i had no idea. I can see what i can get done in English and then i will work on the other way round for sure, as this is just a case of moving the kanji or kat a kana over. Not sure if the sega cd has a chip for it like the PC-98, as then that could be a nightmare.

Also, some one has given me this site as a resource for referencing some stuff, any good?

Just for proposing this work you deserves congratulations, since I was a child I've been waiting for a translation for the PlayStation version, I hope this project comes to life

Nope, Sega CD version was built to be in English from the ground up.

Hell yes. And bonus points if you go the extra mile & use the Japanese translation of the original. Where character ages were more ick and nudity & violence was more sick.

Honestly I want one so badly--I have a genesis but sega cds are so expensive, I've been emulating it on wii to play it with some mock-up of a lightgun. Being able to just actually play it on saturn with a lightgun just like policenauts would be soooo much more affordable and just a neat new way to play it. Honestly the only translations I currently want more are SMT NINE for xbox and devil summoner for saturn, and cyberdoll for saturn

Reducing the censoring is good, but we don't need to bring back the stuff that was removed for a good reason. Like I said, Kojima's back and forth about Katrina's age is one of the reasons why the PS1/Saturn version are worse. She at least looked adult in the PC-88 and PC Engine CD versions, which made it easy to change her age in the Sega CD version. The "updated" versions don't really give much room for interpretation, as she's clearly not old enough for Gillian to perv on. If the translation hacks out her sprites in favor of the old ones, the author would be doing us a favor.

While perving on Katrina is optional and based on the players, I kinda concur with this.... being 40 and all.

Does any one know of a sega cd emulator which allows debugging? As i have only found a way to extract text with hex, which is very, very long winded, so i want to see if there is a way to automate this in some way.
