Who remembers the days of shareware disks?

Today's equivalent would be Itch.io i guess, but there was just such a novelty in getting a disk in the post.

Not in the post, but I used to see racks of disks from something called "Software Evolutions" They'd be a floppy with a few demos / shareware episodes of pc games, and you could usually mail them a cheque and they'd send you a full version of a game. I remember these guys used to be everywhere, and anywhere you'd go it seemed like you would find new disks. Not quite the same as the shareware coming to you every month in the mail, but still exciting.

Getting them in the mail wasn't a thing where I'm from, but I have a deep love for Shareware stuff. We honestly need something like that back.

Never got them in the mail, but I do remember downloading shareware and demos from CNET.
Yeah i remember this too, and this was not so far after the days of shareware if i must be honest. The demo and shareware as a whole is a lost format of media if you ask me.

Speaking of demo discs, i miss having those in magazines!

But, again, good catch!
There's a reason I pointed this out!
I was saying this to reiterate the absurdity of opening many similar threads with few replies, when there could be many replies in a single thread: otherwise you will see the same observations, comments and experiences repeated over and over again. It seems obvious to me that something is wrong here. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

You got me, i am a bot AI, thing here to talk about games.....

Nah, i actually had no idea about the article, but i am enjoying it so far. Could there be a way to show similar theme stuff when a person types out the title of the post?

That way they can add to the other post?

Or would it be preferable to hear about some one else experiances on the subject matter? I will conform to what ever you guys think it best.

Yeah, that's what happens to GBATemp when you post a new thread (similar ones are shown) and I asked here a while ago if it's possible to do the same, but never got a response.🤔 Anyway, you are free to do as you wish, as long as you do not violate the rules of the site; I'm not in charge here and what I say is worth little more than nothing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nah, worth somthing to me, and i am sure others who gadge the conversation, and can learn from it.

I remember burrowing disks from a friend so I could try out Commander Keen and the original Duke Nukem. Never did order the rest of the episodes but it was nice getting what amounted to playable demos. Wish more games released demos these days.

I never got any in the mail, but I remember them on a carousel thing at Computer City in the mid-90s. I do miss seeing these, but in today's world I don't know how you'd justify the production cost versus just plopping a demo on steam or whatever.

My first PC games were shareware, Indiana Jones and the Faith of Atlantis on a floppy disk from K-mart, and Carmageddon CD. Carmageddon I was so confused, because with a cheat code you could unlock a bunch of things, why would you need the real game? Serious Sam demo that played amazing on my potato pc, and then seeing it at the store brand new for cheap is what made my day!
