Yeah this is pretty much it. Cowboy itself as a word lost a lot of the specificity of its meaning with time, because it originally did pretty much exclusively mean just someone who tended to a ranch's cattle or horses, bu it morphed more into the idea of a character archetype. A cowboy, especially when talking about fictional characters, would now just be someone with personality traits popularly associated with cowboys. Also with space marines, technically military marines are just part of a group of troop that are trained for land or sea. A space marine would just be one of those that operates in space.
So it actually meant dudes who tended to raising cows? Cool

Aren't marines infantry trained for amphibious operations?

That's part of their training. They're really just kinda meant to be able to operate just about anywhere, aside from air combat.

Is that US definition? Or is it the universal way of training a marine?

If you ever wondered why I’m so weird, it’s partly this show’s responsibility.
Ditto for me, but with Bottom. Rik Mayall's one of the funniest men to ever live imo. Have his autobigraphy somewhere

Mostly U.S. It's the Oxford definition, but even then it does specifically say "in particular a member of the US Marine Corps.". I'd imagine it'd still be similar in other countries that have marines, but I'm sure some have more focus on amphibious missions than others.

I do think the definition is broad enough that it can be applied to other places in the world.

Bottom is awesome, too! I actually love Filthy, Rich and Catflap the most out of Rik and Ade’s shows, but any episode from any one of them sends me into conniptions. Those two just couldn’t be beat for British comedy.

American marines....man they be eating crayons I heard

Yeah I think you are right I can't remember correctly but during battle of Stalingrad the Soviets did have a few marine brigades? I'm not sure if they were marines or something else...main thing is if I remember right one of these naval divisions got clapped so hard its commander broke down in tears or was it a regular division? I can't remember...

Good question! I can't say for sure (I don't really know for sure how the Soviet army was organized), but considering the desperate struggle, they couldn't give themselves the luxury to spare any of the arms from the fight, so it's likely marines were part of the conflict.

In case you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend The Mighty Boosh. Early 2000's musical alt-comedy

Yeah, they get trained to kinda be able to handle as much as is reasonably humanly possible. It's actually hard to say the full details of what that entails though. I have a friend in the marines, and about all he was allowed to talk about from his training was the typical physical training and the tear gas resistance training, which he said and I quote: "sucked." That really was all he had to say about it :loldog

I picture it does hurt to get gassed man , yeah American marines are known for their toughness and being high quality soldiers uhm uhm but they don't get trained for being homeless

See, war is talked about, studied, celebrated even. What happens after and how to deal with the aftermath? you'd be lucky to see a passing mention. But I'm not going to open that can of worms.

Yeah I'm right there with you on that one. All I really feel like adding is, at least here in the U.S., a lot more could be done for troops returning home than there is.

Avoiding that can of worms though, anyone have any songs ear wormy enough to never leave your head? This little number has been stuck in my head the last couple days.

I’ll put it on the list, my good man! Thanks for the hot rec! I still need to watch Spaced, too… 😉
You're in for a treat whichever you go for first :D

Nah, it's just taking a break for the moment. We're getting close enough to 300 to get a bunch of posts about how close we are to page 300 soon.
