I wish I had something interesting to post, today, but I've just spent the last hour watching Ren & Stimpy clips on YouTube. I could watch (the good parts of) that show a million times + APC and never get bored of it.

Something that makes me really sad, though, is how expensive all the books I want are. :(

Dreadful. I might actually have to resort to... gulp... reading some of the books I already own. What a tsundoku I am.

In other book-related news, I'm about 3/4s of the way through Ryan Graudin's The Walled City, and I've been really enjoying it! I'm going to post a full review of it in the "What are you reading?" thread when I'm done, but for now I'll just say that I've devoured about 350 pages of it in like 3 days. Thumbs up from Gorse (UNLESS THE ENDING SUCKS)!

I know the feeling man, a lot of the books I want are out of print so they go for like 80 or more online. I don't know if this is much of a chain where you are, but if you have any half-price books stores they've been a total godsend for me. (Also they carry retro games and comics too!)​

You guys have it easy, i have to import books a lot to get the editions i want, yes the american and european stuff, not just the jap stuff.

I have become quite familiar with Amazon's import fees.

Depends on the book. I personally really hate reading novels this way, and those are often incredibly difficult to find .PDFs for online anyway. Comics and ttrpg rulebooks though, I have my sources for. Even still, I like having physical copies of the ones I like. I'm not gonna break the bank for it or anything though.​

Not condoning high seas activity, but have you tried using library genesis or the book links at fmhy.net ?

Admittedly LibGen is mainly for academic texts, but you can get loads of specific editions that way. Hell, one of my Prof's all but linked us in her class to the website herself so that we could find the references we needed.

Still, it's always good to support authors/creators, as long as there're channels available to do it.

I should really give it an actual rewatch.
I was obsessed with it when I was like 12 but I don't remember much and I imagine I'd appreciate it more as an adult. Even the goofy cartoony effects and sounds.

I collected all the boxsets over the years and my friends and I watched them religiously. Still one of my top 3 shows ever.

In that podcast I mentioned, they got cast members on, and the Director apologizes multiple times for jokes that may be deemed problematic today. I get why he felt the need to do that, but watching it at the time, I thought it was very clear it was just fantasy - Not an attempt at social commentary. I'm glad I can still just appreciate it for the early 2000's TV absurdist comedy/drama that it is.

Anyone a fan of Faygo? For the uninitiated, it's a regional soda from either Michigan or Ohio, mostly known for being the drink of choice of rap group Insane Clown Posse. They only have a handful of flavors here at one convenience store, but it was naturally all over the place back home in Michigan. It's not really that good, seems like it should be the same price as the knock-off soda brands, but it was always the same price as Pepsi and Coke. Occasionally I get one as a novelty if I see it. I suppose the same is true of ICP, once in a blue moon I'll listen to a handful of songs as a novelty. Definitely not a Juggalo but some of my friends back home were.

Faygo is very common in bumfuck Mississippi. 20oz bottles are about 89¢ to $1. They aren't terrible, but they are VERY sweet and still aren't as fizzy as major brands and nicer glass bottle sodas. They load them with sugar and THEN add artificial sweetener on top of that.

Same here in Missouri. Faygo is popular and everywhere. I can't really drink the stuff so I have no real opinion on it.

I kind of like when creators do this. I don't care a lot really, and it's not like I demand it or anything, but I like when they're allowed to explain dated jokes and themes stuff (instead of either coming out as bigots and defending it, or just stubbornly fighting people who just ask valid questions), because it usually delves into creative processes.

I'm ashamed to admit that I'm a lifelong Friends fan, and I have (along with others) questioned why there's like literally one black character in the entire show (who shows up super late), and creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman has gone on record explaining that it was just straight up ignorance on their part, because almost the entire cast and premise of the show was based on their early adulthood.

Yeah, I have a killer sweet tooth but even for me Faygo is a little too much a lot of the time.​

I've never actually minded canned laughter before, but I find clips of shows with their canned laughter removed endlessly hilarious because it just feels so unnatural that I can't help but laugh.​

I grew up on shows with canned laughter so I've always kind of had a soft spot for the format because it almost feels like I'm watching a play, but I understand it's insanely hard for people to take shows like that "seriously" if they're not used to it.
Though I like Friends, Seinfeld is my favorite show with built-in laughter by a million miles.

Speaking of sitcoms, I highly recommend this documentary series I watched a few weeks ago.
It repeats itself a bit throughout the episodes, but it was a really good time for the mostpart.

Yeah, I guess I could steal this BS off of Libgen or whatever (actually, I'm on a private tracker for literature, a-hm-hm-hm-hm), but when it comes to a book that I really, really want to dig into – especially something longform – I'd really much rather have something tangible in my hands that I can hold. If it's just a dumb little paperback or a 128-page multimedia book or something, I'm fine reading it on my tablet, but if I'm actually considering paying money for a piece of lit, I would like the real version.

I dunno, I get the impression that I'm kinda weird about this stuff, because most people I know are hardline one way or the other (often violently so). I also only like listening to biographies over audiobook, because it's nice to hear the actual person reading out their story in their voice.

I actually quite enjoyed CNN's documentaries for each decade of culture, too – especially the 2000s one, which is when I grew up! I wish they'd spend a little less time on celebrity nonsense and more time on the actual media itself, but hey, what are you gonna do.

I've been watching Wait Till Your Father Gets Home a lot recently, which is an ooooooold (but very good) Hanna-Barbera cartoon for adults, and like all their work in the 70s, it has a laugh track... but only in some episodes! They must have lost the master audio tapes for some of the other episodes, because certain ones don't have laughter in with the dialogue, and it makes it incredibly awkward when a character says a funny line, pauses in silence, then continues. I actually think it's very charming.

I think it kind of leaned a bit too much on identity themes too at times, if that's what you're implying hehe, but at the same time it kind of reminded me that sitcoms are a good vehicle for depicting lots of different walks of life, so I didn't mind it too much. It didn't think it ever felt sanctimonious or anything.

That's totally reasonable. I don't think it's ever bothered me that way. It's tougher when the show is largely unfunny though, and you can hear the repeat recordings (Big Bang Theory comes to mind), compared to older shows which really had audiences.

Oh yeah, you're right, but I wanted more of a spotlight on both that show and ALF like they gave to, say, All in the Family. Those were very technically-impressive TV shows for the time, and they had great writing! (Well, Dinosaurs did, ALF was a bit shit but I still love it.) I know that wasn't really what the documentary was about, but c'mon, it would have been interesting. In the '90s documentary they did, they really skip over all the animation of that decade, too – I wanted to see them talk about that!!!!!
