The PlayStation line has seen a lot of game produced for it's 5 consoles across many different and varying genres. From the original PlayStation with it's polygonal graphics to the PS5 and its ray tracing each console has a plethora of games for any kind of gamer to choose from.

But out of the 5 PlayStation consoles which one's library stands head and shoulders above the others?

no console will ever match the library of the ps2, and that's okay. the ps2 was a genetic freak, and it was not normal. it was immaculately conceived in a time when the barrier of entry was low enough for more companies to reasonably make games, and the potential reward was high enough that the draw was positively tantalizing. the combination of control patterns being only loosely standardized, mechanics as they relate to genre being explored but not set in stone.

in my heart of hearts, i wish only for the return of my hero. in my dreams, i hear the whir of its embarrassing little emaciated disc tray. when the modern era finally crumbles, we will meet it. the ps2-2. and i will be there, tears flowing down my face.

Way i see it

PS1 - 80-85% of the Library is Bangers and Fire

PS2 - 97% Of the Library is Fire!

PS3 - Unreal Engine 3... euuuhhhhaaaa

PS4 - Eh.. it has spider-man i guess...

PS5 - What games?

The PS2... i got the OG PHAT one i have now when it came out in NA, and i never Regreted it, much as i did with the OG PSX i have <again, bought on release>
Yes, i have had to replace the Laser at one point in both. but that's it.

Both the PS1/2 are Great consoles for the time they came out, and i still to this day, Albeit i don't play the old Consoles anymore <really no need to> i still play them Via Batocera Emulation.

Do i like the Library of each?

You damn pippy skippy i do.
I Wouldn't take anything in Trade then or now for the PS1 and 2.

I have a PS3 and 4 as well
The ps3, i got it some years after it came out, modded it, thought "Huh... neat.. few cool games" and it's been in the retirement box, along with the psx&2

Have a PS4. no games for it, aside booting it, to make sure it worked, and to see what firmware its on, i haven't turned it on. Won't till i can mod a 11.50 System <when the ps6 comes out, i am assuming>

So which do i think has the best games?

Tie between the PSX & PS2 for me.

The PS1 had more RPG games that i remember, yeah there were other games. PS2 was a huge leap forward in quality, though the hardware is wonky to emulate with the GPU setup. PSP is a PS2 Lite and the best middle ground between the two.

PS3 had some beautiful games; But if you can't emulate them then what's the point? Same for PS4/PS5.

I was that person that got a PS3 so late in the game and used it to buy backups of PS1 classics, if it weren't for the romhacking scene I probably would have boughten the PS2 titles for PS5 just as a back up until I got the console, but where are the PS5 games first? ATM I am looking into PS3 discs to make up for lost time and hardware space as my main memory is dedicated to PSOne Classics.

ya, i got a PS3 about 6 months before the PS4 came out XD

will always be the original PlayStation (1) released 1994 for me. From the solid arcade ports, brand new IPs, innovative types of games, large library, multiple genres without fear of experimenting. RPGs on par with SFC/SNES releases. Variation across the board with less centralized homogeneity. PS2 on the other hand found a niche and focused on large 3D environments, 3D platforming, and open-world 'style exploring & story-telling which I was disinterested in altogether. I prefer the wild-west ambitions of the prior generation.

PS1 has a lot of cool games
PS2 has the most amount of cool games
PSP is a mini PS2
PS3 has a couple cool games
PS Vita has a lot of ports and a small amount of cool games
PS4 has a few cool games and Gravity Rush 2
PS5 has nothing

The PS1 has a massive amount of pick-up-and-play style games that are right up my alley. I've been enjoying Road Rash 3D a ton.
The mature 3D on PS2 is its own brand of legendary and brought forward new genres that pushed the medium forward.
PS3 was less of a success but it has many sweet and fun titles like Short Peace and Resistance 3.
PS4 was a return to form for mainstream presence but still had great titles like Gravity Rush 2 and Shadow of the Beast.
PS5 has a hopeful future as SCE has figured out their previous direction is no longer working, and with more games like Astrobot it will lead the charge into the next generation.

If we can count backwards compatible titles, then I'd say the PlayStation 3, simply due to being able to play every PSone game via disc (and PS2, on the earlier models, as well as the digital PS2 library), alongside having a pretty sizable and great library in and of itself.

If we're counting just one console's library, then PlayStation 2. There's so much variety and quality throughout the library that regardless of who you are, you'll find at least something to play and enjoy on PS2.

The PS2 has the more expansive library, but the PS1 has many more experimental/unique titles. I think it comes down to which of those things is most appealing to you.

Everything onward lacks the same kind of robust library in my opinion.

The results surprise me not.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the PS2 was was a momentous occasion for the entire medium.

In My Opinion the Sony's Desktop Console that Had a Quality-Quantity Ratio was the PlayStation 2. But the PlayStation 1, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3 and 4 are not far behind either because they have that same Quality-Quantity Ratio but not at such high levels that the PS2 had both in its beginnings and the end of the life of the Sony's Console.

The PS2 has the most great games, and it also has a lot of diversity the PS1 lacks. While the 1 has a number of great JRPGs, its other genres are so often held back by nobody truly knowing what to do with 3D until around 2000. The PS2 has people knowing what to do with the dimension from the start, on top of having basically all non-exclusives of the 6th generation and a lot of superior versions of Wii games in the 7th.

The PS3 and 4 have some good games, but the initial HD generation didn't age so hot. Even if it does have some great stuff, I still prefer my PSP and Vita over it. I do like a lot of what the 4 has, but it's honestly not as big because of the shift to big richard budget titles and homogenization. The 5 has no games.
