Honestly, the only ending of a game that's actually affected me like this is Life is Strange. It was the first 'decisions matter's game I'd played. I know the game gets its fair share of criticism, but if you go in with zero expectations and just want to experience a story, it's pretty moving.
Conker's Bad Fur Day, if you know you know, i will just say they managed to make me feel bad for easly the selfishest, meanest piece of trash in the Fifth Generation
Void of emptiness after finishing what it felt like a long ride: Xenogears.(More so with that credit song)
Sad because of what actually happened at the end:
FF Crisis Core, and more recently Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth hackers memory
No game made me feel like that. For me when I reached FFX style endings I already knew we were going to have to say goodbye to that character or we were going to have a tearful ending so there was no surprise on my part and I had already gone through that "duel" a while ago.
The ending of Spiderman in UMVC3, while all the other characters have a funny or just happy ending like Rocket traveling to Racoon City, Peter Parker after defeating Galactus and saving the world he returns to his miserable life and low-paying job
Every ending of Tomoyo After is a "bad ending". Even the "Good" ending is depressing. There's some hope. But it's really sad anyway. It's like Key was saying "Ok, you wanted best girl. But you are gonna have to suffer for it."
You will come to a fork in the game where you need to make a certain decision during a fight. The right decision leads to a horrible fate for one of the characters that won't occur if you make the wrong decision. But the wrong decision gives you a dead end ending regardless. You get this feeling of "This couple can never ever be happy" no matter what you do.
The ending of The House in Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence absolutely devastated me when I finished it, went in with a warning that it was gonna hurt and it was even more than I could have expected.
Nier Replicant, a lot of the stories in the game just want to destroy you. While gameplay wise it sometimes feel like a slog the music and story made me replay it to get the other endings and the endings hit hard.
Solidus.
Even though he was a total bastard, he came the closest anyone had to undoing the will of the Patriots, potentially ushering in a new age of self-autonomy. And then we kill him.
For me there two kind of Games that give me that down and dirty feel. Those which are meant to be sad at the end and those which have even a great ending but as a series sadly stopped or have different reasons why the game makes me feel so empty afterwards.
Games that have that down and dirty endings :
-Splatterhouse (Arcade):
The ending just perfectly made me feel really broken .
Spoiler: At the fight with Jenny which turned into a monster , i saw she vanished into dust and i very much hoped it wasnt her and just Clone of her . I thought i could save the "real" Jenny at the end of the Game but the ending showed me something different. I thought i could save her by not killing her or speedrun towards the level which i fight against her to save her but sadly it stayed the same . Thats why i appreciate Splatterhouse 1 very much . And that ending theme is just the nail that is hammered my already aching Soul and Heart really deep without any mercy . Great Game but what an gut-punch of an ending .
-Megaman IV (Gameboy):
That ending is more bitter-sweet but one character just was way too cool to go with Style .
Spoiler: Ballad-mans sacrifice was one that really made the ending depressing . Helped Megaman to escape from Willys spaceship and saw him more than just a rival . And another end-theme that really hit that Nail into the heart.
Games that made me down and dirty for other reasons :
-Metal Max Returns (SNES) :
After i beat the Last Boss and complete everything , i could just resume playing it . But nothing was there anymore to do , so i triggered the ending by speaking with the dad to come home back .
But what really depressed me at the end was that i enjoyed this game so immensly and love every second of it that this empty feeling happened because the fun was over and the game conquered .
That never really happened to me before .
Thats why i wait for the sequel on the SNES to be translated. MMax:Returns was magical for me that it was an awesome SNES JRPG and the sequel has the same vibes on the SNES but with more minimalistic graphics . While i can play the DS Remaster , they changed the aesthetics too much for my taste . A nitpock for sure but still one that annoys me still .
-Demons Crest (SNES):
After beating it many times , there is always the realisation when i look at the years which the was releases .
This game will never get a sequel .
I played the games before Demons Crest and love the whole series for its cool MC and its world of demons that had its own Lore and ideas that sticked out and let me appreciate the Ghosts n Goblins series . It was way too good to stop at this huge banger of a Game .
