Yes, i like STG as well, i even met one of Raiden's developer in TGS a year ago, the old one, he is retired recently.

And since I'm gamedev, naturally, i developed STG as well. It was small game, leaning to easy beginner STG.

I was thinking to buy arcade in my studio, but i think other owners wont let me as budget reasoning : ))

I want to build small arcade tbh, because my place is not big. Still need to find the correct reason : ))

I have always liked these old school SHMUPS but I'm ass at them. One my favorites is Gradius III on the SNES even though I've never made it past the second level. Giga Wing comes to mind the soundtrack is bangin' especially the boss theme. My earliest memories of playing the genre are with Varth: Operation Thunderstorm, which stood out because Ryu makes a cameo as a collectible item that increases your points I think.

I've always wanted to emulate Raiden III and IV but I've never figured it out.
Raiden III is easy on PCSX2

A little remaster on this with mega drive graphics and sound would be nice.

I want to try Gallop and R-Type Leo even if they're technically not mainline R-Type games.

Do you have any thoughts on these?

Raiden DX
Sorcer Striker
Dragon Blaze
Dimahoo
Same! Same! Same!
Parodius Da!
R Type

I've been shuffling around with these for some time. I recommend those for classic shmups.

I think my favorite shmup to this day is Dodonpachi DOJ/Reincarnation. Because I have played almost every shmup out there. And I still play this one and I haven't gotten burned out on it. I personally like black label. But I do enjoy the switch version and the recreated soundtracks.

R-type Leo is fantastic

I'm still confused about why they haven't ported it to PC nor the Switch.

I still find it interesting how the PS2 port got canned in favour of the 360 because of one transition towards the end that would've made the console lag.

The DS "semi spin-off" was also cool to see.
I would like to see live wire or digital river port this game to the switch. But M2 shotriggers would be my preference. But I'm sure the switch is going to be at least 4 frames of input lag. But I will still continue to play it on my pc with retroarch.

I gravitate more towards vertical shoot 'em ups since vertical ones like RayStorm, Touhou 06 ~ EoSD, and M2's port of Mushihimesama Futari ver 1.5 are got more into the genre, with RayStorm being my introduction during my childhood after playing a demo disc that featured it.

Vertical supremacy!

Also rail shooters are amazing too!
I don’t play many horizontals, but perhaps I just need to play the right games?
I'm not an expert on horizontal shooters but there are some great introductory ones I can recommend:

  • Deathsmiles — Particularly its modern ports on Xbox 360 and onwards. The game can be very challenging but the modern ports feature various modes and difficulty levels that can ease things for beginners while offering challenging gameplaying and engaging scoring systems for experts.
  • Natsuki Chronicles — I haven't played this one yet myself but I heard this one is a solid horizontal shoot 'em up that refines many of the issues that Ginga Force has (although it's also a very good slow burn vertical shooter even if all of its new ideas didn't quite pan out).
  • Trouble Witches — The one doujin shooter that still hasn't gotten its sequel off the moon. It started originally on PC but it has seen various ports on Arcades, Xbox 360 (when it lasted), Steam, and more recently on PlayStation 4 and Switch. Its latest release, Trouble Witches FINAL!, I would say is probably the definitive version of the game yet since it has enhanced visuals, comes with all of the DLCs from the Steam version, features with new modes, another playable character, and online co-op after a patch update (sadly no local co-op like in NEO!).
  • Fox Flare Night — An upcoming shoot 'em up by Outside Sotonohito, and I think still has a demo available on Steam. From what I played, it seems to build off his previous shoot 'em up games and features an optional shop system where you can power up Mio and her abilities. This one is a bit on the lewd side with girls with enormous bust sizes, but if that doesn't put you off, I'd high recommend checking the demo out.
  • Platypus Reclayed — A remake of cult classic PC shoot 'em up I discovered a while with amazing claymation visuals. I only played the demo of this and it's kinda tough, but it's very fun and it has been getting some great updates recently too, adding quality-of-life improvements, rebalancing the difficulty and making this more approachable for beginners, a free Halloween-themed DLC, and official modding support for the Steam version.
  • Earthion — Ancient's latest game and newest Genesis game* since Beyond Oasis, it takes inspirations from the likes of R-Type and Gradius but I feel this one is more approachable since it doesn't punish you as badly for taking hits (although losing lives can damper your chances of coming back), offers various ways to strategize your ship's specs, different weapons to experiment with, and the difficulty on Normal at least isn't too demanding. The Genesis version isn't available yet but you can get it on PC and current consoles.

Gradius is horizontal and is great.

I'll add thunder force 3 and 4 on the genesis and thunder force 6 on the ps2 for beginner friendly ones if i didn't mention it.

As for others, progear comes to mind, it's on the first capcom arcade stadium and is a good one though a bit odd in some ways.

I forgot to add rail shooters don't get enough love and the Sin & Punishment games great choices for this sub-genre of shoot 'em ups, although the sequel is not something I would recommend for beginners since it is a gauntlet compared to the first in terms of playthrough length.

S&P is good but kinda hard to properly play without a N64 pad. The Wii game is great but you miss a lot not to play with a wiimote + nunchuck.

Speaking of Rail Shooters I'm waiting for Ex-Zodiac to finally go out of Early Access

This one looks cool af and it's quite cheap. I'm itching for some rail shooter and this one looks interesting

This game basically has rekindled my interest towards low poly game (and because I got a pixel art fatigue with indies). Flat textures and checkerboard shadows are also nice to see there.

Lunistice was meant to be another Starfox like game sadly it changed to a platformer (still a good game but its original name was Eversleep) while it got renamed Project Moonbunny but has been kinda canned.

Even Lunistice 1.5 (a major update that started as a sequel but the dev had struggles so they decided to put a new character instead) has been more or less frozen.

Blazing Star, Darius Gaiden, R-Type Leo
I play shmups for aesthetics :)

I'm bringing this topic back to talk about how R-Type The Third Lightning will get a sorta remake like Dimensions EX

Now there's only Final 1 left.
